5 Chefs Compete Part
1
June 20
So Ja'Nel joins up with the Blues for the
first time and for the first time in a long time... they win a
challenge. Then they turn around and despite Zach mailing in another
performance, win the Dinner Service... along with the Reds. That's the
good news. The bad news... Ramsay only has four black jackets. Zach...
will not get one, as he is honorably (?) discharged. Now five remain,
and one still has to go before the next Dinner Service.
... and Susan is wondering (because
Ja'Nel told her that she's the Reds' weakest chef) how she can possibly
curry her favor. It's an answer to a question, Susan. Suck it up and
move on.
Oh, did we mention that Jon's the rooster
amongst hens? Because that's important, I think... because he's stuck
listening in the middle of the night to Susan and Mary talking about
Brazilians. And no, we don't mean inhabitants of South America.
The next day... Ramsay decides to begin
things with some video hellos from the families & friends of the final
five. Hopefully this puts a little more fuel in the tank, because in a
moment... you're actually spending time with your family. The videos?
Decoys. Which I saw a mile away. It's official. I watch too much reality
TV. And so do you.
Back to business. Five chefs... FOUR
black jackets. ... and one extra that we have lying around. That's
right. ALL FIVE CHEFS are BLACK JACKETS. You done did it to me again,
Ramsay. As the chefs say goodbye to their loved ones, they suit up for
their next challenge.
First of all, a tease. The winner gets to
spend their afternoon with their family. But first...
SKILL DRILL
#14: Pressure Cooking (Ability)
Chefs... Meet pressure cookers. They cook
rapidly and add great flavor to cheap cuts. Now you have to make a
five-star dish from a cheap cut of meat.
Cyndi: Pork roast
Jon: Lamb leg
Susan: Pork belly
Ja'Nel: Goat ribs
Mary: Beef short ribs. This is what Jon wanted.
Forty five minutes to cook. Let's go.
There's one rule of pressure cookign.
Don't. Open. The lid. Susan opens it six times. Jon opens it to rescue a
burned piece of lamb. Luckily there's Andi with the assist.
Judging for the challenge, Chef Nancy
Silverton (chef/partner, Osteria Mozza) and the dine editor of Los
Angeles magazine Lesley Bargar Suter.
SUSAN: Pork Belly with Fennel & Leek
Salad - a little overwhelming. Next time, don't open the lid.
- 9 stars
JON: Lamb Leg with Rutabaga - meat's not
cooked enough.
- 10 stars
CYNDI: Pork Roast with Acorn Squash Puree
- It's tough
- 7 stars
JA'NEL: Goat Ribs with Vegetables -
BETTER than great.
- 14 stars
MARY: Beef Bourguignon with Pasta -
Everything complements the chunk of the meats.
- PERFECT SCORE AND WIN!
Mary and her family will eat lunch at
Wolfgang Puck's WP24. The others... are going to be the maintenance crew
for tree people. And it's recycling day. Separate the food from the
other trash. Going green and giving back to the earth for Tree People...
A good idea. IN THEORY.
So while Mary enjoys lunch, the others
are being scared off by maggots. Ew. They finish it...
And after a long day, the chefs are ready
to call it a night, but one chef is still stirring... and he wants
everyone down in the kitchen IMMEDIATELY. News: tomorrow's service will
be the most challenging in your career. But there will be another team
of chefs in the other kitchen, some of the greatest chefs Ramsay have
ever known.
These chefs... will be revealed NEXT
TIME.
TO BE CONTINUED
... and one of them is probably Dave
Levey. If you're going to blur the face, blur the nametag, too.
