Live Shows Heat 5
August 20
(C-Note: some of the acts that you are
about to read involve real danger in front of a live television audience. They were
designed, practiced, and supervised by professionals, taking the
contestants' safety into full account. They are extremely dangerous and
should NEVER be attempted anywhere, by anyone, at any time.)
Last week, a pole dancer, a singer, a
comic, and a country musician joined the ranks of the semifinalists. Now
we're down to the final shot at the semis. But who'll round our the
semifinal field? Here comes Gordon Pepper and his Most Dangerous Panel
analysis...
But first, a game note. If you remember,
Red Panda Rong Liu auditioned in Vegas with an injury. Ultimately that
injury is too much to bear, and she is out of the competition. Enter
alternate Melody Caballero.
Virginia State University Gospel Chorale (Choir): Madonna's 'Like
a Prayer' is a perfect song to select for a choir to use. The problem is
that the orchestration makes it seem like it's.. well...a college
production. They sang it by the numbers and they needed to do something
more creative with it.
Melody Caballero (Contortionist): It's amazing what she can do
with her body. America won't vote for it, so she has no shot, but this
was a surprisingly good act coming from a kid circus performer.
Dave Fenley (Sings 'Trouble' by Ray LaMontagne): I really like
his voice and performance on the song. I have 2 concerns though: #1. Did
nothing to change up the song (something that the other singers have
done in order to get in) and #2. Could possibly be too far up on the
lineup for America to forget about him come voting time.
2Unique (Kiddie Rappers): Welcome to kid's hour. If Disney TV is
watching, you have a few new stars that you can have for your show. And
the best part is that they will be available to perform as early as
tomorrow night.
Sam Johnson (Pole Swayer): When asked what he can do to raise the
bar, I was expecting something more interesting than sway on a bigger
pole. Oh wait - it revolves down. That's sort of different, I guess.
Duo Resonance (Gymnast Act): The problem here is though I like
their act (the balancing was impressive), there's too many dancing
couples acts that raised the bar much higher than what they did. If they
did this during Week #1, they are in. Instead, they are bland compared
to what everyone else did tonight.
D'Angelo and Amanda (Miami All-Stars Kiddie Dancers): They did
something completely different (A Paso Doble), and raised their game
(almost complete darkness with spotlights and a raised platform which
they jumped off of). Completely mesmerizing and fantastic performance.
Selena Mykenzie Gordon (Child Singer): She sings 'What Hurts The
Most' by Rascal Flatts. What hurts her the most in this performance is
that her voice is not strong enough to cut through the beginning of the
song and she totally wipes out on the high notes at the end of the
performance. This was a mess and the completely wrong song to sing.
John Wing (Comedian): He's an older and mature comedian and this
is the material (unlike Taylor WIlliamson) that you want to bring to a
family comedy show. I only question his delivery and if he has enough to
get to the judges table.
Sprice (Rube Goldberg creator): I love this sort of act. He
reminds me of a more charismatic Kinetic King; and unlike the Kinetic
King, his device worked perfectly. With all of the kiddie and music
acts, he has a shot to sneak in the back door and grab the judges vote,
if he winds up in the Top 5.
Ruby and Jonas (Kid Dancers): If they are not against D'Angelo
and Amanda, they get in. But they are against them - AND Catapult. AND
Some other strong acts. I think they will be somewhere in the Top 5, but
I think they wind up in the judges round, and I don't know if they are
going to advance 2 sets of kiddie dancers.
Catapult Entertainment (Shadow Dancers dedicating their
performance to the Sandy Hook massacre): They do a story of life with
the music of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'. While I thought their first
piece was better, this is far and away more dramatically impactful.
There's no way they don't get a spot into the next round.
Could this be the first time in AGT history that 3 dancers from the same
show advance? Possibly...
