Semifinals: Hirpa/Peña/Kreitz - February 14

Fifteen of the brightest teenagers from all across the country have been cut to the final nine, as they compete for one of three spots at the finals at the end of the week.

We started with 15 who had descended upon Los Angeles to compete in the Jeopardy! Teen Tournament, where one will walk away with $75,000 cash money and the mantle of Teen Champion. Now only Camille Bullock, Papa Chakravarthy, Joseph Graumann, Iddoshe Hirpa, David Hoffelmeyer, Sebastian Johnson, Matt Klein, Andrew Kreitz, and Allison Peña remain. For three of them, a trip to the two-day final and a possible $75,000 payday at least. For the other six, back on the school bus home. So far, only Matt has earned a ticket to the end of the week finals.

The first runner-up receives $25,000 at least, while the second runner-up wins at least $15,000.

Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000, while quarterfinalists are guaranteed $5000 for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

Today, the second of the semis... Remember, no second chances... It's win or go home.

Jeopardy! categories: Around the USA, Cartoon Before & After, Your Friendly Military Recruiter; Keanu, Ashton or Einstein; "Old" School

Daily Double: $600 Around the USA. Iddoshe ($1600 to Andrew's $400) bets $1000. The clue: it's the only state that has parishes instead of counties. Iddoshe’s response: "What is Louisiana?" Correct for $2600.

End of round:
Iddoshe: $6600
Allison: $1400
Andrew: $6200

Double Jeopardy! categories: Biology, Unuusual Sports, The Museums of Europe, O Pioneers, Novels, Words Borrowed by the Internet.

Daily Double #1: $1600 Words Borrowed by the Internet. Allison ($5800 to Iddoshe's $9400 and Andrew's $7800) bets $2200. The clue: it was a marketplace for public square before it became an online area to post discussions. Allison's response: a blank-looking head shake. Correct response: what is a forum? Allison drops to $3600.

Daily Double #2: $1600 Novels. Iddoshe ($12,200 to Andrew’s $14,200 and Allison’s $3200) fronts $2000 to tie for the lead. The clue: Jerry's refusal to sell candy for a school fundraiser ignites the title conflict in this Robert Cormier novel. Iddoshe’s response: "What is 'Maniac McGee'?" Correct response: what is "The Chocolate War"? Iddoshe drops to $10,200.

Iddoshe makes the money she lost on that last clue back as we end with what amounts to a calculated two-person race...

End of round:
Iddoshe: $12,200
Allison: $6400
Andrew: $16,600

Final Jeopardy! category: Notable American Women. The clue: in 2004 & 2005 this former university provost topped Forbes' list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the World. Correct response: Who is Condoleezza Rice?

Allison's response: Who is Oprah? WRONG. Wager: $6200. Total: $200.
Iddoshe’s response: Who is Condalezza Rice? RIGHT. Wager: $10,800. Total: $23,000.
Andrew’s response: Who Condaleeza Rice? RIGHT. Wager: $7801. Total: $24,401. FINALIST

If I am being honest, Andrew simply knows how to play the game. His net gain of $10,400 in Double Jeopardy! and his wager in the Final proves that he's an early favorite to take it all at the end. He just needs to make sure he doesn't falter, and it should be smooth sailing.

Tomorrow, Joseph, Papa, and David for that final seat...
