Semi-Finals 2
July 28

It’s 2 vs 5 this week on the Gladiators.

#2 Jeff Davidson
5’10” 160 lbs.
Financial Advisor

#5 James Ruggiero
6’1” 216 lbs
English Teacher

Last appearance James got a contender high 41, including 3 event wins.  Jeff put up 31 in his prelim and was losing!  We start our second semi the same way we started the first—with Rocket Ball.  Our Glads tonight will be the short-named team of Toa and Zen.  James is lots of show and 6 points of boat.  Jeff manages only 2, though which puts him behind early.

#2 Lillian Thomassen
5’9” 150 lbs.
Concrete Artist

#5 Tiffaney Florentine
5’1” 122 lbs
Business Consultant

Both these ladies had to start from behind to win, so anything could happen.  Their first game: Pyramid.  Lillian gets stuck with Crush and Tiffaney gets Steel.  As far as Pyramid goes, this was a pretty typical match, i.e. no contest.  Zeros all around.

Round 2 for the men is Atlasphere.  Into the cages will go our contenders along with Hurricane and Titan.  After the minute of ball-bashing, Jeff is able to halve his deficit with a 4-2 victory.  James is cursing (verbatim “son of a bee sting”) but still holds an 8-6 lead.

Back to the women we go with Tilt.  Hellga’s going to be the Gladiatorial anchor, and does a good job of it, too.  She causes one splashdown and one draw with Tiffaney so there’s your first score of the match.

It’s Gauntlet time for the men.  Remember it’s only 10 for a 20-second win, 5 for a 30.  Tonight’s pecking order is Zen, Wolf, Militia, and Justice.  The contender’s ready.  The Glads, not so much.  Wolf and Zen make a position change.  A bit of extra hits, especially by Justice, prevent Jeff from scoring, but the latter infraction was too big to go unnoticed.  A technical 5 goes to the contender.

Next is James, who gets Wolf first, as well.  Remember in the prelims, he made Wolf look crazy stupid twice.  Not so much here, but he does get through until Militia who took exception to an accidental club to the head and decides to take things personally.  Our fearless ref gets in there to break things up.  We reset with 22 on the clock, which I think is about 1-2 seconds too many, but it only takes all of 4 seconds to blow by Justice for 10 points he would’ve gotten anyway.  The lead goes back up to 18-11.

Now it’s women’s Gauntlet time.  Tonight’s hits will be brought to you by Jet, Crush, Phoenix, and Hellga.  Tiffaney has issues getting past last year’s champ, but manages 5 points regardless.  Lillian’s issue is Hellga, but she also score 5 to keep a 10-5 lead.

As we catch up with the women, Siren kept Hang Tough scoreless and Skytrack was, well, Skytrack.  No scores mean no change heading into our final event.

It’s the Joust and so it’s Crush time.  Lillian gets a couple of good licks in, but Crush gets better licks.  Tiffaney is less effective and equally productive.

When you have only 10/5/0 events, this will tend to happen.  Despite putting up 9 zeros on the board, Lillian’s 2 non-zeros gives her the advantage.  Having run the Eliminator one minute slower than her opponent, you have to wonder about Tiffaney’s chances.

For the Men, there was Hang Tough.  Jeff stayed dry, but didn’t get onto the scoring rings.  James had a repeat performance of his prelim and scored another 10.  On Tilt, our leader was able to draw against Toa.  Since Jeff was scoreless again, the score is now 33-11.

Can James break his record of 41?  Unlikely, because it’s time for Powerball.  James says he can go to 11, but Wolf, Titan and Beast crank it up to 13.  The result, a 2-2 draw BUT, one of James’ goals hit the ground first, so it won’t count.

Jeff’s Eliminator was 33 seconds faster, so with a 21 point deficit, the numbers say look for an interesting match up.

However, we start with the women.  2.5 seconds is the lead Lillian has, and it holds up until the Hand Bike.  She falls off and Tiffaney overtakes her to win in 2:06.2

With 61 seconds shaved off her previous time, she’s a lock for the Finals.  With our first upset of the semis, it looks like it’ll have to take 2:05 or better from our final two women to move on.

Over on the men’s side, James has a 10.5 second head start.  Can he shave a minute as well?  Well, he looks good at the start, but Jeff comes on like a shot.  However, he slides face first past the landing of the first rope swing.  Despite that, he’s able to catch up and nearly take James out on the rolling pin.  With James going down the zipline backwards (DO NOT try this at home) it all comes down to you-know-what.  James is able to get through the Travellator first and win in 1:43.2.  Jeff gets…a gash above his eye.

Looks like 2 was an unlucky number for our contenders.  However, despite being 24 seconds faster, James has opened a hole big enough to drive a truck through.

Who will prevail?  Next week is our final semi and the championship match.  Get Gladiated.
