Preliminaries 3
May 26

On this Memorial Day night (in the US), let us celebrate some of the rights our troops have fought for, like the right to get the crud beat out of you by a pugil stick.  It’s time for Gladiators.

De Day
5’3” 115 lbs
Business Owner

Tiffaney Florentine
5’1” 122 lbs
Business Consultant

Yes, that is how their names are spelled.  I’m not big on it either.

Anyway, the ladies start off with Pyramid.  Crush and Phoenix are on the job.  The contenders try a unique approach: trying to fling the Glads down to the bottom and then get to the top.  They’re less than successful, and they start off with goose eggs.

Brick Reilly
5’10” 165 lbs
NJ Public Works

Toby Gordin
5’9” 200 lbs
Grocery Owner

Just a side note: Brick is deaf, and in order to hear, he’s wearing a surgical implant and amplifier.

Back to the action.  It’s Hang Tough time, and that means it’s Wolf on the prowl.  Brick is able to survive the full minute, but there’s this whole thing about getting into the scoring zone that he failed to do.  Toby went down the old-fashioned way, so we end the first event with a quad zero.

Our first full event of the night is the Joust, and that means Crush will be delivering the hits.  De was on the wrong end of a haymaker and dropped her stick.  Tiff went down in a more conventional manner, so they’re still scoreless.  On the men’s side, Titan gets a break as Justice gets his first crack on the platform.  He starts out strong, delivering a steady stream of pain to Toby, eventually knocking him down.  Brick is better off, pushing both he and Justice off at the same time, but the replay shows that Justice’s left foot is the last one to leave.  That means he wins, and there are still four 0’s on the board after 2 events.

Round 3 will certainly break the shutout; it’s Rocketball.  Jet and Venom will be leaping into action tonight.  Tiff applies the up-and-under approach to moderate success, winning 5-4.  The men have to deal with Titan and Zen.  We get some wicked hits, but no leader.  At halftime, it’s 4-up for them.

The women start the second half with Earthquake and the new female Gladiator, Steel.  De and Steel hang from a wire, but as time expires, it’s only good for 5.  Tiff is able to take Steel down to the depths for the full 10, so it’s 15-9 in her favor.

Back to the men we go and Vertigo.  Rocket will be manning the poles.  He does seem to get the hole shot over Brick, but the Public Worker was able to pass him and win in 32 seconds for the full 10.  Toby is not so lucky, but he was able to make it into the scoring zone within 39 seconds, so the deficit is only 14-9.

It’s another full event for round 5, and it’s new.  Meet Tilt, kinda like Tug of War, but the Gladiator is on a higher pedestal.  Hellga takes the high ground and is able to work over Tiff, but De is able to knock her off balance and gets 10 points worth of cannonball.  She now takes the lead 19-15.  On the men’s side, Toa will be tugging.  Toby trips and goes splash, but Brick is able to get the Glad off to the side and into the drink.  He now leads 24-9.

Our final event is Skytrack.  Venom and Crush give chase on the ladies’ side, and it doesn’t take too long for both to be victorious. Militia and Zen get strapped up to go on the men’s side.  Toby doesn’t get that far, but Brick leaves Zen in the dust.  32 seconds later, Brick gets the win and a 34-9 advantage heading into the Elminator.

We start with the women.  De’s 19-15 lead turns into a 2 second head start, but that evaporates in the pool.  Tiffaney is able to get a lead at the bottom of the net, but that’s gone by the top.  De is able to reclaim the lead, but she falls off the handbike.  Tiff gets ahead once more, and even though the Travelator brings the two together, she gets up first and wins with a time of 2:57.  On the men’s side, Brick’s 12.5 second lead is just too big, even for this Eliminator.  Despite dislocating his arm after falling into the Pyramid, he wins in 2:10, and that’s good for the 2nd spot on the leaderboard.  Toby, surprisingly enough, isn’t too far behind…2 and a half, maybe?

So two more have added their names to the list of champions.  Who’s next?  Tune in next week and find out.
