Judge Cuts 3
July 28 |
(C-Note: some of the acts that you are
about to read involve real danger in front of a live television audience. They were
designed, practiced, and supervised by professionals, taking the
contestants' safety into full account. They are extremely dangerous and
should NEVER be attempted anywhere, by anyone, at any time.)
So far, we have 14 people through to Radio City in
addition to the four that the judges put through in the
early stages of the competition. Now we get to hear 20
more plead their cases in front of a packed house and a
table that contains our special guest judge...
... from the NBC series "I Can Do That", it's MARLON
WAYANS! He will get one hit at the Golden Buzzer to send
an act through to Radio City. The other 19 will compete
for 6 spots. Welcome to the most important 90 minutes of
your life.
TRIPLE THREAT (Denton, AR) are three guys who started
singing on the sideline of their football team in high
school. Now in college, they're hoping to follow up an
amazing audition with another, this time of "Problem" by
Ariana Grande. They worked themselves up to a great
melody about that and the crowd LOVES them. They should
have no problem getting a pass from the judges.
HONOR ROLL SKATE CREW were not as clean as they were
initially. At least they got there eventually. EVOKE TAP
MOVEMENT were several movements, but no group dynamic.
Meanwhile the next group has a bit of issue... THE SQUAD
had one of its members get a slight injury on his feet.
Will he be able to nail the flip? YES!
ANIMATION CREW grew up dancing on the streets old school
with a ghetto blaster. A lot of characters makes up this
group, including one eater and one ladies' man. They
want their own show in Las Vegas. Let's see how they get
on. Last time, they made a painting come to life. This
time, they're reenacting the Jackson 5ive... as
animatronics. Creative. Heidi thought it was stand-out.
Howard wanted them to stay in character.
OLEKSIY MOGYLNYY (acrobat) is the guy with the mannequin
as a dancing partner. But if you get past that, he's
actually pretty nimble. He's going to elevate that act
for a spot in the next round. The piece is to "Total
Eclipse of the Heart". Nothing really out of the
ordinary or memorable. The judges, on the other hand,
think it's weird.
JOHNNY SHELTON (singer-songwriter)'s son passed away
from cancer. He channeled that into his songwriting.
Last time he was here, he sang a song for him that moved
everyone to tears. Today, he'll try to do it again with
"The House That Built Me". Howard was able to feel his
performance. Heidi as well. Mel B didn't feel the same
way, saying it was "pitchy".
Magical Quick Hits include DANA DANIELS and his bird.
That was it, actually.
PAUL ZERDIN (ventriloquist) started by taking the
stuffing out of a teddy bear and using that as his first
puppet. He's been doing this for 25 years. Last time he
confused the sound man. Today, he'll have a friend
alongside, a baby that won't stop crying. So why did the
baby keep saying "Duck?" The answer... is coming out of
his pants. Anyway the judges thought it was incredibly
clever and cartoony. Howard says that he's going to be a
contender. Marlon loves him, and he loves the comedy.
And he loves the GOLDEN BUZZER! PAUL ZERDIN THROUGH TO
LIVE SHOWS! Which six will join him? We'll find out
right after we pause 10 seconds for station
identification. This is America's Got Talent on the Red
Network of the National Broadcasting Company. (G-E-C)
OZ PEARLMAN (mentalist) freaked out Mel B last time she
was here. He'll try it again, knowing full well that
things can and do go wrong with mentalism, and if it
goes wrong tonight, out come the buzzers. Howard is
thinking about Oprah Winfrey, while Howie... well, we
don't see. Oz went with Tom Cruise... and Top Gun.
RIGHT! Howard went with Oprah and... WOW! That's freaky!
How do you follow this up? I reckon we'll find out soon
enough.
BRITTNEY ALLEN (singer) is "Too Close", PAUL BLAIR (hula
hooper) gets Xed out, but what about...
PRETTY BIG MOVEMENT (full-figured dance crew) came on
the stage and wowed the crowed. Will they do it again?
They work it to "Bang Bang"... and they're all in sync.
But it seems rather novelty after a bit, as Howard
attests to by bang-banging his buzz-buzzer. "It was
nice. Nice ain't gonna cut it." We're in agreement. We
like the message, but the act itself was a giant step
backwards.
STACEY KAY (singer) kills the crowd with a
larger-than-life voice and persona.
MOUNTAIN FAITH BAND (another NC-based band) will try and
outdo that. Last time, they brought an
Americana-flavored variety of pop music. Together, they
only have one rule: do what mom says. They're going to
try and live by her with "I Believe In a Thing Called
Love" by the Darkness. Not the best song choice, but
it's easily adaptable by this group. Howard thinks
they're talented, but not really current. Howie thought
it was talented and respectful to American music. "You
are this music."
RANDY ROBERTS (drag queen) hopes to get on the Radio
City stage with "Lady Is a Tramp". We're looking for the
whole package, and I think Howard actually got it. Other
than that, it wasn't a phenomenal performance, but it
stood out with actually singing.
VITA RADIONOVA (32; Seattle by way of Ukraine) is a
contortionist and hand balancer. Her dream would be her
own show in Vegas. She's worked a long time for this,
and she's got the body to prove it. But does she have
the moves? The judges seem to think so. Heidi thinks she
upped her game, while Marlon may have used his Golden
Buzzer prematurely.
We've seen girls dancing and playing with sharp objects,
leading us to the final marquee act of the night...
BENTON BLOUNT (singer/songwriter) has a partner in crime
and a secret weapon: his 2-year-old son that he takes
care of while mom goes out and makes a living. He
channeled that last time and it got him here. Today,
he'll go with a similar vein with Dolly Parton's
"Jolene". He's got the power to carry that song. Heidi
thought the voice was rough around the edges. Mel B
though it wasn't really enough.
