Judge Cuts 2
July 21 |
(C-Note: some of the acts that you are
about to read involve real danger in front of a live television audience. They were
designed, practiced, and supervised by professionals, taking the
contestants' safety into full account. They are extremely dangerous and
should NEVER be attempted anywhere, by anyone, at any time.)
Last week, the judges began their cuts to see who would
advance to Live Shows. Surviving: Piff the Magic Dragon,
Chapkis Dance Family, Myq Kaplan, Freelusion Dance
Company, 3 Shades of Blue, Silvia Silvia, and Samantha
Johnson. Tonight, seven more acts will join them. This
is Judge Cuts... Week 2!
And here to assist in the cuts, worldwide crooning
sensation MICHAEL BUBLE! He is granted the power of the
Golden Buzzer. If he likes an act too much to let them
go, he'll fire them straight on to Live Shows. Because
he can do that.
As a reminder, we will see 20 acts. Seven of them will
advance.
And by the way, it's Mel B's birthday!
AIDEN SINCLAIR (Cheyenne, WY): if you remember, he
translated a bid in prison into a magic act. His next
card trick involves all of the judges remembering five
different cards. He nails ALL FIVE. And the judges are
immediately wowed.
JENNA RENAE (23; marketing specialist) sings us back in
with "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You". It's not
spectacular. But the judges really liked it.
SHIRLEY CLAIRE (San Antonio): last time, she wowed the
crowd by... well, being her 87-year-old Hollywood
showgirl self. She'll do it again with "The Best Is Yet
to Come", a song that is near and dear to Michael's
heart. Proving you're only as young as the man you feel.
DANIELLA MASS (orig. Colombia): she came here to live
the American dream and to bring her mother here to share
that with her. She'll try her hand at "Don't Cry for Me
Argentina" in English and Spanish. She tells the story
in both languages beautiful... and in a killer range.
IRA FENNELBLOOM (and his mother): Last time we met this
puppet, he was singing an ode to Mel B. Now he's going
to be backed up by his mother, Miriam. Together, they'll
sing "Let's Get It On"... which goes as expected... for
a puppet. In that it's very entertaining, but somewhat
hard to believe. Mel B definitely wants to get it on
with him. Which according to Ma means "let's go down the
street and get ice cream."
Taking a break from the action... Howie pulls off a
birthday prank for Mel B... a man in a cat tank top. In
a cake.
BENJAMIN YONNATAN: He is certifiably blind, and he's
lost more vision since last we saw him. He is down to 2
to 5 degrees of vision, but that doesn't stop him from
dancing. So he'll just dance to "Tell Your Heart to Beat
Again" by Danny Gokey (C-Note: hey, I remember him). Not
as impressive as the first time we saw him, but
impressive nonetheless. He is a master of transferring
his weight.
Quick Hit time! Facinet Sylla (street dancer), Nastasya
Generalova (rhythmic gymnast), and Wes Barker (escapist)
all perform.
UZEYER NOVRUSOV (orig. Russia, circus performer): a
juggler who was studying to be a chef. His whole life
revolves around his twin daughters. Today, he'll be
balancing on a ladder... 's handles. Howie likes him.
Heidi says he's a feel-good act. Michael... gets on
stage and does the act himself. Or at least gives it a
good honest go with a smaller ladder. Howard buzzes him.
Michael, not Uzeyer.
We're heading into the second half of the night (we know
this because the judges' table is empty) with RYAN SHAW
(39; NYC; singer), who was actually nominated for THREE
Grammys, but never got close. He wants to relive that
success he had a long time ago with "I Can't Make You
Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt. He got in a table-saw
accident, but it didn't affect what Michael calls "the
strongest voice he's heard this competition."
THE CRAIGLEWIS BAND (Atlanta): two best friends... one
group. Times have been rough, but they've weathered
through it. Last time, they killed "It's a Man Man Man's
World". Today, they'll try their hand at "I'm Goin'
Down". It's reminiscent of K-Ci & JoJo, where one has
the stronger voice that overpowers the act. But it's on
tune, so let's see what the judges think at the end of
the night. Michael doesn't want to push the button...
because he's confident they're going to pull through.
... What the hell. GOLDEN BUZZER! THE CRAIGLEWIS BAND IS
THROUGH TO LIVE SHOWS!
DR. DANGER'S ALL-STARS (daredevils): last time, they
jumped a bus and lived to tell the tale. They're happy
to be alive after that. Today, Mini Mike & Texas Trash
are going to jump a motorcycle through a ring of fire,
then ride through eight walls of fire. Which...
underwhelms. And here come the buzzers. Until he
actually drives through the walls of fire and spins out.
He's okay, but I doubt he's going to convince Howie &
Howard to give them another shot.
More dancing Quick Hits from Center Stage (Orem, UT) and
DADitude.
DM NATION (orig. Quebec): they started their dance
studio a little while ago. They're the only all-female
dance crew in the competition. They're going to march to
"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Lorde. They mix a
few krumping moves in, and it just works. Michael
thought it was "c'est magnifique!" Howie thought it was
girl power. Mel B thought they danced hard.
THE CHIPPENDOUBLES (dancers): okay, color me corrected.
We have women impersonators dancing... not well at all.
Four Xes, that means "Thanks for playing, exit's that
way."
CHRIS JONES (hypnotist): he's the one who hypnotized
Howie to shake his hand. Second time lucky.... no.
SCOTT HEIERMAN (cross-dressing comic): he talks about
being adopted at a family reunion and how it's like
being the store-bought sheet cake at a table of homemade
baked goods, and that's where he forgot the line.
Last act of the night...
SELECTED OF GOD (gospel choir): Larry and Teresa
Callahan believe that they have the best choir in the
land. They'll try to survive with "Survivor" by
Destiny's Child. They've got the crowd whipped with
their gospel-tinged take on the new classic.
