(C-Note: some of the acts that you are
about to read involve real danger in front of a live television audience. They were
designed, practiced, and supervised by professionals, taking the
contestants' safety into full account. They are extremely dangerous and
should NEVER be attempted anywhere, by anyone, at any time.)
They survived their first audition... but that was the
beginning of a journey that only one will see through to
the end, which means some serious decisions will have to
be made. And since the judges have proven that they
can't make such decisions as a panel, they're calling in
some help. Welcome... to Judge Cuts.
Tonight, joining the panel in determining who makes it
through to Live Shows at Radio City Music Hall... We'll
see in a moment.
Here's how it works. Each week 20 acts will perform for
one of seven spots in Live Shows. Helping out the panel
today... the host of the upcoming series "Best Time Ever
with Neil Patrick Harris"... NEIL PATRICK HARRIS! Of
course, since he is a judge today, he will be given full
judge privilege, including the power of the Golden
Buzzer. If Neil likes what he sees, he's going to put
you through Live Shows. As a reminder, four acts are
already there.
Neil starts the show by hitting said buzzer. Now the
stage crew has to clean the confetti and reload the
cannons. Thanks.
FREELUSION DANCE COMPANY: Growing up, the only person
who understood him was his grandfather, who shares his
imagination. The company will continue the story they
started with their audition. The effects are really
spectacular, but the moves didn't sync as well with
them. But it leaves us wanting more with a cliffhanger
at the end. Neil would use his buzzer, but he's sure
they will sail to the next round. The judges love the
music and the images.
PAUL PONCE: He's a juggler who's competing against his
mother. Today, he has a soccerball that he's also
juggling. Howard buzzes early. Paul keeps bouncing while
touching Howie. ""At the end of the day, it's a guy
bouncing a ball on his head."
SILVIA SILVIA: Originally from Colombia, Paul's mother
would cook by day and shoot crossbows by night. She'll
shoot some more with her husband holding a sword, a
balloon, and a beer bottle.... in his mouth. Then
setting off a chain reaction with her in the middle
William Telling it. A quick sign of the cross...
BULLSEYE. That is how you step up your game. Howard
called the staging spectacular.
CHAPKIS DANCE FAMILY (Suisun City, CA): Greg Chapkis
grew up in the Ukraine looking at Michael Jackson and MC
Hammer. He dreamed about performing at Radio City Music
Hall. He could get his dream and 28 others (aged 14-35)
if they nail
this number. Imagine, if you will, 28 people all in
time, in step. That's this act. NPH thought the design
choices was "smart", while Mel B thought it was "fresh
and fast." Howard thought it was "too busy, too much,
and doesn't allow us to hook into you guys."
SAMANTHA HESS: she's a professional cuddler. She's been
offering hugs to the other performers all night. Let's
see if the judges show her some love. They... don't. And
she was about to go into the Romeo, too. Like Piff the
Magic Dragon says... "Four Xes... straight home."
Quick hits to Elin & Noah (dancers) and Los Angeles
Children's Orchestra.
ALONDRA SANTOS: At her first audition, she was very
nervous, but once she got the through, she let herself
go. Let's see if she composes herself enough to get
through her next round. She and her giant hoop dress
perform "Cucurrucucu Paloma". She's got a lot of range
for someone her age. And her voice has a lot of emotion
to it, and it's well composed. Remember, she's 13!
MICHAEL JOHN: he grew up dividing his time between
baseball and magic. He gave up being a Mariner for being
a magician. Last round, he turned a card trick into a
trip to this round. He makes a coin disappear into a
Coke can. Trouble getting the coin out prompts Howard to
buzz him. "You have a very quiet presentation. It's hard
to get worked up about what you're doing."
PIFF THE MAGIC DRAGON: How can he step it up for level
2? A dog... in a dragon outfit.... who is getting put
down... in a very comfy cushion... if he gets sent home
tonight. His act: another card trick assisted by Mr.
Piffles. He's going to try and find the card using only
his smell. The card... in the can of dog food. It's
basically Michael John's act with stage presence and a
dry British sense of humor. NPH likes it. He likes it a
lot. In fact... You can say... it's GOLDEN! PIFF THE
MAGIC DRAGON IS THROUGH TO LIVE SHOWS!
One slot down. Six to go. Next up, Duo Ignite lighting
up the stage with their acrobatics.
MYQ KAPLAN: he is doing a long-distance relationship
with a former fan of his, Casey. If he wins the million
with his comedy, he will stick with his girlfriend AND
start to play the field. His girlfriend forms the basis
of tonight's comedy act, along with logic, philosophy,
and drinking. NPH loved his rapid-fire delivery and
don't-give-a-damn deadpan snark. If a comic can win this
thing, it's him.
NICK & EDDIE (singers) don't win Howie over with "Crazy
Little Thing Called Love". "It felt like a cruise act."
KEITH KLEIN (singer): "The Way You Look Tonight"... a
little less like a cruise, but it needed a little spark.
3 SHADES OF BLUE (rock band): they were trying to
balance college and music... but couldn't, so they
dropped out and pursued music full time. Something that
their families understand. Ultimately. They take the
stage with "Fairly Local" by Twenty-One Pilots. Howard
says it was a very wise move to take on music. "You guys
might be the answer to my prayers." Mel B's not a fan of
the song, but she's a fan of the band.
MARC & KIRI (32, 26; Ann Arbor, MI): this couple
delivers an sensual, electrifying performance to "The
Power". VIBEZ (Los Angeles) does the same thing to "GDFR".
X-TREME TRICKING & TUMBLING (Dallas) brings fire to
flips. GRANDMASTER QI FEILONG (kung fu and qi master):
He channels the energy of the universe to do what he
does. Today, he'll bring fire with nothing but the
energy of the audience. Heidi... is not feeling it.
"Everybody say fire!"
Well, he got fire.... after the judges gave him four Xes.
Mel buzzed by proxy.
Last up... SAMANTHA JOHNSON (singer): last time, she
brought down the house with
"Natural Woman", drawn from her mother splitting from
her father. She literally
went from teenager to proxy mom overnight. Her father is
quite supportive of her
talent. Let's see how she gets on with "Lay Me Down" by
Sam Smith. Not the
command performance she had before, but still VERY good.
The judges use terms
like "extraordinary" and "special something".
I do not envy the judges' job right now.
