Blind Auditions 5
October 6
Three weeks ago, the biggest talent show involving revolving chairs began again with two new coaches and a boatload of new talent. Our teams are almost filled to capacity. But one more night remains.

As you can see, everyone is currently on 10 singers. A full team has 12. So each coach must pick two more to join their teams.

First in the home stretch is straight out of Philadelphia, Matt McAndrew (23), a recent graduate of their arts school. His parents never married, but he's had a great relationship with both. Between being a bagger, he's also a voice teacher. He was always a class clown, but he straightened up when he got to college. Trying to juggle the grind with the gigging is starting to get to him, and he's hoping that a win on "The Voice" will help him to give back to his family. We open the trials tonight with "A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri. Adam doesn't wait that long to hit his button... while the rest of the men want in on this action. The coaches agree that he is outside of the box with his tone and his acoustic skills. But who will they benefit? Matt picks... TEAM ADAM! One to go.

Brittany Butler (21, Boston) grew up with her mom (who was diagnosed with Crohn's as a kid) and her grandfather (who introduced her to jazz standards as a young age). She ended up performing on YouTube. She wanted to go to Berklee, but it was expensive. She did go on a full-ride. She wants to honor the memory of her grandfather with "The Girl From Ipanema"... and the girl from Anaheim wants her. So does Skateboard P, though. And for the first time, it's just the newbies fighting against each other. With rainbows and ponies. Before they hug each other to death, let's get Brittany's choice. She picks... PHARRELL. One to go.

Evan Watson (29; Fishkill, NY) decided to open his own business, Plan Bee Farm Brewery. Specializing in honey and beer. He's hoping to sell enough to support the child he's about to meet. Meanwhile, his father was himself a musician, and he also wants to follow in his father's footsteps, having opened for Meat Loaf. Evan calls his audition on The Voice his last shot. He'll take it with "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". But nobody is driven to hit their buzzer!

Ryan Sill (20; Sterling, VA)'s mom is an opera singer and a voice teacher. She tried to teach his sisters... that didn't work. Though in the training, they sing about guacamole, and taco salad, and fajitas, and now I'm hungry. Father thinks that education comes first. Though Ryan did go to JMU for engineering, he became known for being a solo artist in an a cappella group there. I... don't know anything about that. What I DO know is that Ryan is going to hit up for a coach with "Secrets" by OneRepublic. Well that was quick. Damn, Gwen. Blake follows suit... and it's going to be between him and her. He calls him laid-back and powerful, and that his team would be perfect with him. Meanwhile, Gwen thinks that he was a little wobbly but sounds good. She doesn't have but the three guys on her team. She'd like another one. She's gonna get one. GWEN's the coach! One more for her.

We're going to Miami to meet Fernanda Bosch (17, Miami), who comes from a very large Latin family. They sing, they dance, they... swim? Yep. Moom's a swim coach, while she works with the Special Olympics. She was a singer for a group in Miami, but she's looking for a bit of solo exposure. Will she get it singing "I Try" by Macy Gray? She will, because Gwen and Blake both want in. But BLAKE is going to get his in, even as Fernanda and Gwen have so much in common. Oh well.

Everyone's down to their last pick.

Beth Spangler (30, Aiken, SC) is a senior radiographer at a children's hospital. She loves to help kids, but she would love to focus full time on music. She has been singing her whole life, and she's been driving 3 hours to Atlanta for more opportunities. She had to give up on her dream to take care of her father, who lost his leg in an accident. She thinks that everyone's going to look at her and hear her and automatically think, "Country artist". She's more of a bluesy pop artist, as she demonstrated on "The Best Thing I Never Had" by Beyonce. Someone's going to complete their team, because Blake and Adam are in! And not a group to sit and make things light, Gwen and Pharrell make it a four-turn. After Pharrell can't sit down, Blake goes on about overalls, and Gwen talks about shoes, Beth goes with... The Maroon 5 frontman. TEAM ADAM COMPLETE!

Erin Kim (24; Los Angeles) teaches tae kwon do at his father's martial arts studio that his grandfather came from Korea to start. When he was 18, he started on his first open mic. He loves Al Green, and he performs acoustic soul hip-hop. He learned a lot of discipline, and he is going to channel that into "Latch" by Sam Smith. As a reminder, we've cut the cord on Adam's buzzer. Fat lot of good that does, because no one latches onto him.

Griffin (23; Greenville, SC) is close to his siblings. He wanted to go to Nashville to establish himself as an artist, but his family could not afford it. They could not afford much growing up. He wanted to try and raise money to take care of his family. His relationships with his siblings got him through. He ultimately became a haberdasher, and his bow ties paid his way to Nashville. Today, he's a patient accounts representative to a senior home. He wants to say "see ya" to the seniors, and he'll try with "It's a Beautiful Day". And he's got a beautiful three-turn. Someone's going to lock their team in right now! So who will it be? Blake likes Michael Buble. Pharrell like Griffin's range. Griffin likes... Skateboard P. TEAM PHARRELL COMPLETE!

Spaces are coming at a premium now, as we meet Chandra Knudsen (21; Harlan, IA), a Katy-Perry lookalike who loves... Batman. She's a part-time nanny and a graphic designer who sang at county fairs. Will she translate her country pipes into a chair turn? Blake? Here's the song, "Hard to Love". And apparently is very a propos.

Mayra Alvarez (26; La Porte, TX) has big shoes to fill, as Jake Worthington from last season was from her small town. After Jake sends her a video, she sends a shoutout to her father, who booked her on Christian television. She'll make a turn for the secular with Michael Jackson's "Human Nature". Gwen hits it on the tail end... of a note that shook the heavens... and so does Blake. This is going to be interesting.  Blake plays the Jake card. Gwen plays the girl-power card, but only one has the winning hand. She goes with... the Hollaback Girl. TEAM GWEN COMPLETE!

That leaves Blake with the only open spot remaining. Will it go to Justin Johnes (15; Massapequa, NY)? He comes from a musical family, but it wasn't until 6th grade when he started to be serious about his craft. He only performs on his YouTube channel. Father left, while the rest of the family has held strong. He has a key that says "dream" on it. Will the closer - "Let Her Go" by Passenger - be the key to his dreams? YES! TEAM BLAKE COMPLETE!
