Either Adam is really
particular about who he wants on his team, or he's just
not playing the game hard enough, because he only has
three, while Pharrell has five. The others have four
after week 1. But the best is yet to come.

First out the gate
tonight is John Martin (25, Chicago), who is a forklift
operator. When he's not at work, he's gigging at bars.
He got into music playing in church with his pastor
father. He gave up college for his father when he lost
his job. He'd like to trade in heavy equipment for light
singing. He'll make a play with "Sweet Pea". Blake's
sweet on his sound. The newbies say not so far, mister.
Will Blake being first and looking for someone who
DOESN'T fit his mold play off for him? Gwen calls him
delicious. Will that play for her? He picks... BLAKE!
Jessie Pitts (18;
Birmingham, AL) used the choir to get attention. She
lived in the barn, sharing one room and being
homeschooled. She spent a childhood recovering from
third-degree burns from a boiling accident. She gained
additional confidence from singing. She got a job at a
record label to pay for college, but she'd rather be on
it as, well... three guesses. Let's see what she does
with "The Story" by Brandi Carlile. Gwen's reading
first, followed by Blake, who mentions that this was his
wedding song to Mirandalambert. That doesn't work. She
goes with GWEN.
Menlik Zergabachew (19;
Silver Spring, MD)'s parents were both born in Ethiopia.
They had since emigrated for a better life. That ended
up with their own soul food restaurant. His choice of
genre is reggae, and he has his own reggae band that he
was in since dropping out of high school contrary to his
parents' dreams. But he does have a good voice. Good
enough to turn a chair? Let's hear him on Sublime's
"Santeria". And in a surprise, Blake's in! He thinks
he's going to get it... then GWEN comes in! And the
coaches think Blake has no chance. ... He doesn't. GWEN
wins.
Michael Stein (62, Los
Angeles) has been a cantor, a minister of music in the
Jewish faith, in an LA synagogue for 25 years now. He's
taught prayers for a while now, and he's even written
country music services in Hebrew. He has a family group
named the Rolling Steins, but his great accomplishment -
being a fiddler for the US Navy Band and playing for at
least three presidents. He thinks he has some unfinished
business on the stage, but let's see him in action when
"The Devil Went Down the Georgia". The judges are having
a lot of fun, but no one is turning a chair for this
guy. Too bad. Well, he had a higher calling anyway.
Coffee anyone?
Ricky Manning (19; Cape
Coral, FL) comes from a family of siblings who can sing
and play musical instruments. They all jam together,
particularly on Jackson 5 & Stevie Wonder. He became a
bit of a ladies' man when his parents divorced. He
didn't go to college, instead opting for a music
career... bumming on the street. Hopefully he can get a
coach to turn their head... and their chair... with
"Love Me Again" by John Newman. Pharrell can. So can
Blake. But who does Ricky love? He loves him some
Skateboard P. Welcome to Team PHARRELL.
Adam... still has yet to
turn his chair. He's saving his button for "something
special". Will he turn for Kelli Douglas (31, Dallas), a
single mother? She considers herself a "late bloomer"
with stage fright and a corporate communications degree.
She taught for six years after resigning. Ultimately,
she's here for her son, to motivate him to do whatever
he wants in life. She does "Danny's Song". And Adam's
the first one in! Gwen's like... what the hell, let me
get in. Blake turning sends Kelli to giggles to end her
90 seconds, but who will she begin her tenure with? She
goes with her heart and says... ADAM!
As we enter the second
half of the show, we turn to Blessing Offor (25, New
York City), originally from Nigeria. He's memorized the
entire subway system, can play the piano, and received
an international soloists award. Did we mention that he
is totally blind? He was born with vision in his left
eye, and when he had a water gun accident when he was 9,
he eventually lost vision in that eye. He wants to do
more with his songwriting on the stage, so he's going to
make a shot at it... in particular, Blake... with "Just
the Two of Us" by Grover Washington with Bill Withers.
It's a mite sharp. But not sharp enough for the whole
panel, as we have our first free-for-all of the night.
He picks... PHARRELL! After he had his heart set on
Blake, too.
Troy Ritchie (21; Trabuco
Canyon, CA) can do Stewie Griffin, Cleveland Brown, and
Christopher Walken, but can he sing? He says he likes
metal. Right now, he buses at a restaurant where he gigs
and is also a childcare worker. He wants to get lucky
with Pharrell. Will he get lucky with "Out Of My League"
by Fitz & the Tantrums. Not out of Gwen's league. She
doesn't have a lot of guys. She's got one now.
Cole Wilkinson (16,
Southlake, TX) has a lot of land, a lot of animals, and
a lot of family for a lot of fun. He decided to trade it
in for a stint at a performing arts school. He loves
music, and wants to do it for the rest of his life.
He'll sing "Classic" by MKTO. Don't overthink it. He....
ends up overthinking it. No chairs.
Next up, Mia Pfirmann
(19; Temple City, CA) was born to a couple of musicians
from the band September. Currently, she's taking a class
in pop rock at a community college. She delivers a pop
rock performance of "Unconditionally". Adam and Blake
engage in a Mexican standoff... and they're the first
two to turn their chairs. Gwen & Pharrell.... follow
suit. Who will Mia follow? She decides on... ADAM!
Joining him: Alessandra Castronuovo.
Meanwhile Pharrell wins
over Jordy Searcy, but Blake finds Kensington Moore.
Next up, in Carson's
Voicemobile we're heading to Orange, CA to meet Bree
Fondacaro (24, Orange, CA). She's from a musical family.
Her dad is a piano & vocal teacher, and he supports her
gigs larger than his small frame allows. Bree would love
to turn a chair today with "It Ain't Me Babe". Gwen's
ready to press... or not. Blake's like "Your loss."
Last up, Anita Antoinette
(24, Boston) returns from last year, where she failed to
turn a chair. She's been hard at work perfecting her
craft hoping for a reversal of fortune on ... another
Bob Marley song, "Turn Your Lights Down Low"... GWEN'S
in almost instantly. So is Blake, who didn't turn his
chair the last time... and so are the other two. From
zero to a four-turn. Gwen: "So what have you been doing
since Blake & Adam didn't choose you?" SHOTS FIRED! When
the dust settles, Anita goes with... GWEN! In your face,
rejecters.
Rare on-camera glimpse of
Gwen's boy Kingston.
