Last time on "The Voice",
the coaches fought hard and fought long for their
favorites. So far, each coach has been blessed with two
great voices, but it takes 12 to make a team. So the
Blind Auditions continue from Universal Studios
Hollywood. Here is where we
stand after night 1.

First up tonight is
DaNica Shirey (25, York, PA), a mother who likes to sing
soul and sang for the Apollo Amateur Night at age 15.
She won in the adult category, then recorded a five-song
demo, and ... then nothing happened, except a) losing
her father to cancer, and b) having a daughter of her
own. She thinks she can juggle this and being a
stay-at-home mom. Let's see as she opens the night with
"Big White Room". Adam wastes no time. And after the
chorus hits, so too do Gwen and Pharrell. Adam both
angry and happy that Blake didn't make it four. Gwen...
is just wondering where he's going with this. Where's
DaNica going with this? She's going with ... SKATEBOARD
P.
Next up, Joe Kirk (17,
Nashville)'s parents were divorced, but his family moved
to Myrtle Beach in order to be "professional singers".
After taking his craft a bit more seriously, he made the
move to Nashville with his brothers. He wants to make
his family proud. "The Voice" is a big step up from high
school. Let's see if he graduates to a team with Ed
Sheeran's "Lego House". YES. Adam and Gwen
simultaneously turn. Blake and Pharrell make it a
four-turn. Pharrell calls Blake out on his use of the
Nashville credit card. Blake calls Pharrell out on his
stupid hat. Adam uses the firsties card. Gwen uses the
I-Was-In-a-Band-with-My-Brother Card. So a lot of cards
on the table. Which will Joe play? He plays... ADAM.
Menlik Zergabachew (19;
Silver Spring, MD)'s parents were both born in Ethiopia.
They had since emigrated for a better life. That ended
up with their own soul food restaurant. His choice of
genre is reggae, and he has his own reggae band that he
was in since dropping out of high school contrary to his
parents' dreams. But he does have a good voice. Good
enough to turn a chair? Let's hear him on Sublime's
"Santeria". And in a surprise, Blake's in! He thinks
he's going to get it... then GWEN comes in! And the
coaches think Blake has no chance. ... He doesn't. GWEN
wins.
A singer lives out a
family dream in Jimi Milligan (35; Philadelphia), whose
father was a singer in an oldies band. He passed away
when he was 19. He has two children from his ex and two
from his current wife. He struggles with family and band
life. He's looking to buck the rumor that fat people
can't sing, and he'll do it with the Motown standard,
"Get Ready". The coaches... aren't.
Reagan James (15,
Burleson, TX) is looking to follow in the footsteps of
another famous singer from Burleson... You may have
heard of her, Kelly Clarkson. She loves Michael Jackson
and Amy Winehouse. She's been singing since she was 8 or
9, letting school sports go by the wayside to
concentrate on her music. She would love to turn a coach
around (preferably Pharrell's) with "Give Me Love" by Ed
Sheeran. Gwen & Blake turn their chairs and they're in
the running. Gwen wants her on the team, while Blake
tells her that she's close personal friends with Kelly
Clarkson. But it's Reagan's choice. And she picks..
BLAKE. But Pharrell gives her a heads-up. He's stealing
her later.
As we kick off the
second-half with Taylor Phelan (25; Sherman, TX), a
former leadman for the Canes who had a burst of fame,
then a burst of daughter. Now he wants to set an example
for his daughter and his wife. And his mother. His
father's been in and out of jail. He'd like to team up
with Adam, but let's see how it falls with "Sweater
Weather" from the Neighbourhood. And that gives us a
four-turn to start the second-half of the broadcast.
After 90 seconds of not doing anything with his guitar,
he has to do something with his brain. And he does... to
PHARRELL'S team? What happened to Adam? Hm.
Caitlin Lucia (18;
Huntington Beach, CA) describes herself as an awkward
person, a musician in the corner. Her hobbies include
collecting Pez dispensers. She has almost 1000 of them,
but will her voice be just as sweet? She sings "You're
the One That I Want" by Olivia Newton-John & John
Travolta. But will she find the one she wants on stage?
... Well that was weird. A little too weird for the
coaches. Nobody turns a chair.
Sugar Joans (24; Los
Angeles)'s father is none other than Joe Pizzulo, a
singer with Alice Cooper and Janet Jackson, but you
probably know him as the male singer from Sergio Mendes'
"Never Gonna Let You Go". She's singing "Chain of
Fools", playing off her dad, whom she idolizes. When
she's not gigging, she's a manager at a shoe store.
Let's see if her performance fits. Everyone's begging
Pharrell to hit it... He won't. But Gwen and Blake will.
At the last second. Blake loves her vibrato. Gwen is
just impressed. So is Sugar. She pours it on GWEN.
We're going to Nashville
to meet Taylor Brashears (21; Nashville), a cashier on a
food truck. That's another show. She loves food
trucking, but she loves to sing on the side. In fact,
she learned to play the violin... sorry, the fiddle, at
an early age. She describes her music as "retro
country". She'll bring that vibe with her in "You Ain't
Woman Enough (To Take My Man)" by Loretta Lynn. Adam and
Pharrell spin their chairs... And Blake says, no sir.
I'm getting into this. "NOOOOO!" Epic no from Adam. We
know where this is going. Right into BLAKE's corner.
Andy Cherry (28;
Charlotte) started singing at church. He's been a
worship leader at church, but to pay the bills, he
slings coffee, where he would meet his future wife. He
got signed to a Christian record deal, wanting to please
everyone instead of being true to himself. The sales
mete that out. Now he's got a second chance on the Voice
stage with Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the
World". Nobody wants to rule Andy's world, though.
Maiya Sikes (36; Los
Angeles) comes pedigreed, her mother's a backup singer
for EWF, Meat Loaf, & Neil Diamond, and her father's a
saxophonist. Mother wanted her to go to Yale, where she
triple majored in music composition, poli-sci, and AFAM.
She wanted to be a lawyer, but now she's going to leave
her case on the stage with tonight's closer, "Stay with
Me" by Sam Smith, a far cry from the Armenian weddings
she's used to. Quickest four-turn of the night. But who
will Maiya stay with? She goes with... the one who stood
up for her, PHARRELL.
