Military Qualifier
July 7
For the past month or so, we've been emphasizing the "Ninja" in "Ninja Warrior". After all, this is based on a Japanese competition. Tonight, we're going to emphasize the "Warrior" of "Ninja Warrior", as we salute the men and women, active and retired, of the United States military by letting them run the course in the shadow of one of the mightiest warships ever assembled.

SAN PEDRO, CA
USS Iowa

Awaiting our warriors tonight are six obstacles, two of which are being christened tonight.

- Quintuple Steps
- Jump Hang
- Log Runner: speed across four free-spinning logs.
- Monkey Pegs
- I-Beam Cross: use your legs and grip to move across the narrow lip.
- Warped Wall. 14 feet, three tries.

This is a win-and-in situation. Anyone who completes the Qualifier is guaranteed a spot in the City Final. If we don't have 30 finishers, the rest of the board will be occupied by those who traveled the furthest the fastest.

- Kyle Durand (43; Navy; technology entrepreneur): FAIL I-Beam Cross
- Amanda Graham (22; Navy; junior officer): FAIL Monkey Peg
- Kenneth Knoop (28; Army; railroad engineer): twin brother Keith will run the course later. FAIL Jump Hang
- Keith Knoop (28; Army; police officer): doctors told him he would never walk again. See Kenneth. FAIL Jump Hang

Mike Young, Felicia Flake, and Dean Mosier all come up a bit short.

- Deon Graham (29; Navy; surface warfare officer): FAIL I-Beam Cross

Then came Sara Valdez (Jump Hang), Styves Exantus (Log Runner), and Jason Cantu (I-Beam Cross) can't figure out this course.

- Dustin McKinney (28; Navy; lieutenant): last year, he fell on a spider obstacle. This year... makes the course his ... yeah. COMPLETE! (5:11.97)

Reporting for duty next: Amy Proctor, Joshua Stone, and Chris Moore...and all were dismissed.

- Kristin Bagby (32; Coast Guard; Dept. of Homeland Security): a breast cancer survivor. FAIL Log Runner
- Seth Caskey (25; Air Force; staff sergeant): COMPLETE! (3:26.67)

Three more came. Daniel Glenn... Paul Metzler... and Natalie Schibell...all went.

- Chuck Mammay (72; Army; retired): a Vietnam veteran, he is the oldest person to run the course. EVER. FAIL Quintuple Steps
- Jeremy Prather (35; Marines; deputy US Marshal): FAIL I-Beam Cross
- Kevin Jones (40; Army; politician): this is what happens when you only take one side of an issue. FAIL Quintuple Steps
- Justin Gielski (30; Air National Guard; loadmaster): FAIL I-Beam Cross

Scott "Red Dog" Redding was neutered by the Jump Hang. Kristin Dalton got run over by the Log Runner. Matthew Jensen beat the Wall.

- Ahmed Toure (24; Army; climbing instructor): COMPLETE! (3:44.53)
- Hyrum Prince (38; Army National Guard; deep sea diver): FAIL Log Runner
- Tory Garcia (30; Navy; intelligence officer): FAIL Monkey Peg
- PJ Walsh (43; Navy; stand-up comic): FAIL Log Runner

Ken Kreutzer tried a dramatic dismount on the Monkey Peg... Didn't happen. Van Tran finished. Caleb Hayre... fastest time of the night.

- Robin Pietschmann (25; Coast Guard; rescue swimmer). COMPLETE! (3:05.51). The run of the night.

And now, the main event. The man who's been through ALL of the seasons of ANW.
