Round 1: Heat 2
June 18
Last week, we learned that you can't be
too sure of yourself in the MC Kitchen, as one person was cut at the end
of the first Mystery Box and another at the Innovation Test. Now 16 home
cooks remain in the hunt for 250 large and a small trophy.
Fall in, cadets, because we're heading to
Camp Pendleton for...
TEAM CHALLENGE #1: The Few, The Proud... The
Hungry
You will have to make a menu to feed 201
Marines. The mission: send them back to training with full stomachs. The
utilities: a trench kitchen. The rules of engagement: each Marine will
eat an entree from the Reds and one from the Blues. If you run out of
entrees and send a Marine back with an empty plate, that is an automatic
vote against, so watch your rations. Winners are safe, losers go on to
the Pressure Test.
As winners of the last test, Frank and
David are your team captains.
BLUE: Frank
Mirando (c), Felix Fang, Scott Little, Stacey Amagrande, Tali Clavijo,
Tanya Noble, Michael Chen, Christine Ha
RED: David Martinez (c), Becky Reams, Josh
Marks, Mike Hill, Helene Leeds, Ryan Umane, Anna Rossi, Monti Carlo
They have two hours to prep one protein,
one starch, and one vegetable. Frank decides on a summer giambotta, a
pasta salad, and an Italian chicken. Reds are going with barbecue pork,
potatoes, and something else... But do they have enough time?
Michael's literally getting burned by
mushrooms. There's no seasoning on them, so they're just... fungal meat.
The Blues keep a pace, but David on the Reds has no direction. He's lost
complete control of the team, so it's up to Becky to pinch hit.
Never mind that, it's time for an
invasion. Meanwhile, on the Reds, the pork is RAW. David's got SECONDS
to try and salvage the dish. Meanwhile, Frank is wondering if they have
enough servings of pasta.
Menus...
BLUE: Grilled
Chicken with Pasta Salad
RED: BBQ Pork Chops with Cole Slaw and
Potatoes
Christine is left to man the chicken for
the blue serving table. Which can be awkward if you're blind. Meanwhile,
both teams run out of protein.
Frank, on the other hand, is running out
of pasta. And David's pork chop... a RAW one got away. Oops. Too thick
plus not enough heat equals raw pork chops. Becky's keeping it cool on
the red side, while David.. is just standing there.
Time to tally the take.
And we're going to have to count this
out. The winners ... Shut up, Ryan..... are... the RED TEAM! By 16
votes, no less!
PRESSURE TEST #1: Apple Pie
A stunning crust... an immaculate base...
delicious apples... all of these go into the perfect apple pie. But
someone, at least one, will be serving up HUMBLE pie.
SEVEN of the Blues will have to face this
daunting task. Captain Frank must decide to sit someone out. Of course,
he decides himself.... but he ends up choosing Felix.... who wants to
cook. Well, what about Scott? "I'm cooking." Guys, it's cool you wanna
fall on the sword, but you play to win the game. Stacey? She takes the
pass and heads up to the lounge.
The rest of you have 75 minutes to cook
the most amazing apple pie. You will be judged on the filling, the
crust, and the overall technique of your pie. You're given every
ingredient you need, AND extra ingredients to make your pie stand out.
Some pro-tips...
- Keep your butter cold so your pastry
remains flaky. Keep your pastry cold at all times.
- Balance sweetness with acidity in your apple saute.
- Whatever you do.. don't sprinkle cheese on your crust... Michael....
Frank added walnuts and pecans to his
crust. It's beautiful AND delicious.
Tanya wanted to do a play on a caramel
apple. Her apples are undercooked, and the crust is underdone. The
nuts... yeah, SHE'S nuts.
Tali kept it simple with cardamom,
cinnamon, and nutmeg, but it needed more apples.
Felix did a caramel with candied ginger.
But it's not as sweet as it should've been.
Michael... put cheese on his pie. Not
much need be said.
Scott's pie... "What in the (^_^) is
that?" Yeah. The apples are good, but the pastry sucks.
Christine's pie bats cleanup... and she
undersells herself. It's absolutely amazing, from the crispy texture to
the perfect apples.
Now... comes the dangerous part. Frank...
Christine... Felix... Tali.... You pass this test.
That leaves our bottom three, Michael,
Scott, and Tanya.
Tanya... is SAFE. Leaving tonight on
MasterChef.... is MICHAEL CHEN. That was a cheesy pie. But if he's got
one thing ahead of him, it's time.
And we have 15... Scott has been down
TWICE. Gordon promises that he will not be third time lucky.
Round 2 continues tomorrow...
