Auditions 2
June 5
The search for America's next MasterChef
continues, as the top 100 - including the show's first blind contestant
- strive to succeed where countless others have failed.
Day 2 begins with Felix (24, food runner
from Hollywood, CA), who is going to prove herself on the plate rather
than with a sob story. She makes a Crispy Risotto with Steak Tartare and
Quail Egg. The tartare's underseasoned. The risotto's a bit burned. She
doesn't deliver on her promise, but it's all on Graham now. She... gets
an apron.
Next up, it's Luca (30, restaurant
manager originally from Italy, now living in Astoria), who learned how
to cook from his mother, who secretly flew in from Italy to support her
son. He's making Fegato alla Veneziana, calf liver Venetian style, with
parmesan polenta. Joe says yes, even if the liver's a little over. That
sets it back for Graham. Gordon... sends him home. But he will be back
next year.
Meanwhile, we get more aprons going out
of the door.
Hiza (24, artist originally from Brazil,
now living in ) has a Chocolate Custard with Raspberry Center in a
Cashew Crust. Visually stunning. And it tastes great. Now to get the
apron.
Nine aprons out today. Next is a posse of
cowboys - Bear, El Bronco, and Al. Only El Bronco scores. What about
Mike (40, contractor from Powder Springs, GA), who's doing this for his
sister who was killed in a wreck six months ago. His plan... ride up on
a horse. He's got a Pan Seared Venison with Creamed Potato and Haricots
Verts. Meanwhile, the horse has decided to go number one. The judges
give him three and an apron to go with it.
Next up, married to the kitchen and to
each other, here are Anna & AJ (Boston). First up is AJ with a New
England Dirty Lobster. Anna follows with White Clam Pizza. Who's the
best cook? Right now, AJ. Anna? Will get a shot at besting him!
Now, the judges go on the road, each
armed with their own food truck to look for America's best to bring back
for judgment. We have chocolate cardamom tarts, squirrel pie, and
porcupine balls. So far, no good, but what will Bubba (40, musician from
Blackshear, GA) bring? He's bringing a Venison Wrapped in Bacon with
Pureed Rutabaga and Greens. The venison is overcooked and underseasoned.
The judges split, 2-1 for... YES!
Craig (43, call center assistant from
Santa Monica, CA) wants an apron like a fat kid wants cake. He makes an
Eggplant Rollatini with Truffle Ricotta & Linguini. Everything came
together on that dish. It's all on Graham... and he says no.
Next up, it's time for the gun show. And
everyone fires blanks. How about Frank (28, stock broker from Long
Island) with a Guanciale Ravioli with Brown Butter Sauce & Romanesco? He
didn't even bother to taste it. That's a no out of principle from
Gordon. The other two... say yes.
Finally, we have Joel (37, soldier
originally from Jamaica, now living in Miramar, FL) getting his marching
order. He has a Rice & Peas with Chicken & Vegetables in a Sweet Pepper
Scotch Bonnet Sauce. He's turned the dish "posh". He wants to own a
restaurant named after his son who drowned on Joel's way from military
school. Joe says no. Graham says yes. Gordon... says yes!
Next week, we finish the auditions and
then head to boot camp to come up with your finalists.
