Finals: Zollinger/Balse/Goodreau - Part 2
May 21
Last week, fifteen of the best of the
past year came to play the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions... Six of
them left broken and humiliated, but with $5000 and the keys to a small
but growing fraternity. Six of the final nine have fallen, leaving only
the final three. Now in a first-of-its-kind rematch of game 5, video
game tester Stefan Goodreau, chemical engineer Vijay Balse, and engine
assembler Jason Zollinger will compete for a quarter of a million
dollars. Second place gets $100,000. Third gets $50,000.
Jason blew his wad last time, meaning
that he's going to have a heck of a hill to climb tonight.

Daily Double: $400 Song Lyrics.
Jason finds it on the second clue. He bets the max of $1000 on this: in REM's
"It's the End of the World As We Know It", 2 of the 4 men with the initials
"LB". "Who are Leonid Brezhnev & Lenny Bruce?" Correct for $1200! The others:
Lester Bangs and Leonard Bernstein.

Daily Double #1: $2000 Treaties.
Jason bets all of his $4000 on this: the Montreux Convention of 1936 returned
control of these 2 straits to Turkey. "What are the Bosporus & the Dardanelles?"
Correct for the doubler, $8000!
Daily Double #2: $2000 German
Literature. Jason has a chance to overtake Stefan. He has $13,600 to the
leader's $15,800. He bets $3000 on this: during World War I he fought on the
Western Front & was wounded several times; he later wrote a 1929 novel about it.
He blanks on Erich Maria Remarque, leaving him with $10,600.

Once again, it's time to crunch some
numbers... If Jason doubles up, he goes to $20,400. If Vijay doubles up, he goes
to $26,800, but he has to protect his lead from Jason. A safety bet of $2201
will do that. Stefan is in a position where he holds all the cards and control
of his own destiny. Even if he bets absolutely nothing, he'll still have enough
to win the tournament should Vijay decide on the safety bet.
Simple strategy here for Vijay: bet
at least $5000 and force Stefan to play to win. The potential benefit far
outweighs the risk.
