Semifinals: Linwood/Goodreau/Belote
May 1
7

Last week, fifteen of the best of the past year came to play the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions... Six of them left broken and humiliated, but with $5000 and the keys to a small but growing fraternity. That leaves us with the final nine... At the top, there's only room for one. Awaiting this year's chosen one: $250,000 of a $400,000 title purse.

Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

It's win or go home for these three...

Terry Linwood
North Texas
bookseller
Game 2 Winner
Stefan Goodreau
Los Angeles
video game tester
Wild Card
Dave Belote
Woodbridge, VA
recently retired base commander
Game 3 Winner

CUT!

Daily Double: $1000 Cut! Dave has $4800 and the lead against Terry's $1800. He bets half on this: the forte is the lower, sturdier part of a sword; this upper, weaker part of the blade also refers to any human flaw. "What is the hilt?" No, it's the foible, leaving him with $2400 and the lead going into the TV time out.

At the end of the Jeopardy! round...

$6,000 $2,000 $3,400
Terry Stefan Dave

Double Jeopardy! categories:

ART & ARTISTS

ANIMALS
CHEMISTRY BEST PICTURE

MASADA

Category #4: Take one letter from the movie to get a response.

Daily Double #1: $1600 Chemistry. Stefan has a shot to get in the game with $3600. He bets $1600 on this: it's the conversion of a carbohydrates such as sugar into an acid or an alcohol. "What is fermentation?" Correct for $5200!

Daily Double #2: $800 Lesser-Known Art & Artists. It's the last clue in the round, and Terry has it with a $2000 lead over Stefan, $15,200 to $13,200. The question now becomes... Does Terry want to win NOW or LATER? He chooses... later with a safety bet of $2000 on this: he's been thrown from his horse & struck blind in Parmigianino's painting of "The Conversion of" this man. "Who is Saul?" Saul of Tarses... is RIGHT!

$17,200 $13,200 $7,800
Terry Stefan Dave

J-Archive.com suggests the 3/4 play.

- Dave wins if... He's the only one right AND he goes all-in.
- Stefan wins if... He's the only one right with a $4001 wager.
- Terry wins if... He bets $9201 and is right.

Final Jeopardy! category: 20TH CENTURY THINKERS

REFUSING TO IMPRISON THIS MAN FOR DEMONSTRATING DURING THE 1960s, DE GAULLE SAID, "ONE DOES NOT ARREST VOLTAIRE"

Correct response: who was ?

Dave's response: who was Sartre? CORRECT. Wager: $213. Total: $8013.
Stefan's response: who is Camus? WRONG. Wager: $4001. Total: $9199.
Terry's response: who is... (illegible)? WRONG. Wager: $9201. Total: $7999.

FINALIST: Stefan Goodreau

With the upset.

In all seriousness, Stefan came alive in Double Jeopardy! Dave didn't play to win (and if you play to "not lose", eventually you will). And Terry didn't have the right response when he needed one (AND he didn't have the bollocks to lock out when he could have). The name of the game is "Just win, baby". And Stefan just did. Now can he win where it counts?

We'll find out on Thursday. Meanwhile, three more play tomorrow.
