Finals: Cooper/LaPorte/Elias-Pushett - PART 1

It's been one wild ride for the final three, but now we arrive at the finals with the three strongest players this year has to offer... senior Raynell Cooper, junior Raya Elias-Pushett, and sophomore Kailyn LaPorte. One of them is going to be $75,000 richer at the end of this two-day final.

Second place gets $25,000 guaranteed. Third gets $15,000 guaranteed.

PART 1 BEGINS...

Jeopardy! round...

Daily Double: $400 African Americans. Raynell finds it in the second clue of the round and bets the max of $1000 on this: on Forbes' 2008 list of the world's most powerful women, this then-Secretary of State ranked seventh. "Who is Condoleezza Rice?" Correct for $1200.

At the end of Jeopardy!...

Going hunting early...

Daily Double #1: $1600 Teens in History. Why they left the category is anyone's guess, but right now Kailyn has $5200 to Raynell's $13,000. She bets $2000 on this: at 14, this future "Old Hickory" was captured & wounded by the British during the Revolution. "Who is Andrew Jackson?" Correct for $7200!

Daily Double #2: $2000 The Elements. Now it's a game with Raya at $5200, exactly half of Kailyn's total and about a third of Raynell's. She bets $5000 on this: alkali metals include sodium & this one, the least dense of all metals. "What is lithium?" Correct for $10,200!

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

NOW it's a match. Wagering will tell the tale of what the players will have to do tomorrow.

Raynell's response: who is John Steinbeck? RIGHT. Wager: $7000. Total: $23,600.

So we end round 1 with a dead heat between Raynell and Kailyn. Raya is on the outs, but this much we know... the third-place finish will surpass the $15,000 guarantee.
