Semifinals: Welch/Kahloon/Elias-Pushett
February 24

For the last five days, the best and brightest teenagers from all around the country gathered at Sony to square off and pitch bout in the tradition of their gladiatorial forebearers to determine who would play for a prize pool of over a quarter-million, the winner getting $75,000. Where 15 once stood, now only nine remain.

Winner of the tournament receives $75,000 and the right to be called this season's Teen Champion. Second place gets $25,000. Third gets $15,000. All semifinalists are guaranteed $10,000. All money will be determined, as always, by how far the players go in the tournament.

We're in week two of our two-week affair, meaning that it's win-or-go-home as the semifinalists fight for one of only THREE seats in the $75,000 final.

The first three...

Brandon Welch
Grayson, GA
senior
Idrees Kahloon
Lexington, KY
junior
Raya Elias-Pushett
Aventura, FL

WEDDINGS R U "SHR"?

Daily Double: $600 R U "Shr"? Raya has $2200 and cheers at the thought of being able to pass Brandon's $3000. She bets $1800 on this: in 1936 Adolf Ehinger improved upon this office device, fashioning it after a pasta-making machine. "What's a shredder?" CORRECT for $4000!

Daily Double #1: $1600 It's All A Myth. Brandon leads with $7400, but the post-Jeopardy! scores of his competitors haven't changed. And he's going for it! For $14,800 or nothing... It's the answer to the Sphinx' riddle: "What walks on 4 legs in the morning, 2 legs at noon & 3 in the evening?" "What is man?" FOR THE DOUBLER, $14,800!

Daily Double #2: $800 Rivers. Raya has $10,000, and only a doubler will pass Brandon. SHE'S GOING FOR IT! For $20,000...the traditional source of this river is marked by a stone in a field 256 feet above sea level & 3 miles SW of Cirencester. "What is the Thames?" FOR THE DOUBLER and $20,000!

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

$21,200 $6,600 $25,600
Brandon Idrees Raya

I have not seen quite a match on Jeopardy! in the 12 years I've been covering it for GSNN. Now it's going to come down to Shore's Conjecture. Do you play it safe, or play to win?

- Idrees wins if... he bets everything and is correct, while the others bet against each other and lose.
- Brandon wins if... he bets $7999 and Raya is incorrect.
- Raya wins if... she bets $16,801 and is correct OR she foresees both Idrees' & Brandon's bets and goes in for only $3601.

Final Jeopardy! category: THE 7 WONDERS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD

THE SMALLEST ANCIENT WONDER, IT WAS THE ONLY ONE EVER MOVED, HAVING BEEN TRANSPORTED TO CONSTANTINOPLE AROUND 391 A.D.

Correct response: what is the Statue of Zeus at Olympia?

Idrees' response: what is the Colossus of Rhodes? WRONG. Wager: $6600. Total: $0.
Brandon's response: what is the Colossus of Rhodes? WRONG. Wager: $21,200. Total: $0.
Raya's response: what is the Colossus of Rhodes? WRONG. Wager: $19,940. Total: $5660

FINALIST: Raya Elias-Pushett

It was a hard-fought regular game, but the end game fell flat for all three on a triple stumper. It's one thing to play hard. It's quite another to play smart. Call it a stroke of luck that the guys bet everything and lost, because this is one of those moments when Raya just did the math wrong in her head. Could've been a costly error, and if she wants to win, she can ill afford to have another.

Our second semifinal tomorrow.
