Semifinals: Penning/Edmundson/Wilson
November 15

Teachers are the backbone of our American school system. Fifteen of them are particularly strong and gifted. Those 15 were invited to Culver City to take part in the third annual (sort of) Jeopardy! Teachers Tournament. The one that rises to the head of the class will win $100,000 and a guaranteed slot in the next Tournament of Champions. Now only nine remain, as we enter the win-or-go-home phase of the competition.

Second place is guaranteed $50,000, while third will get $25,000 in a standard two-week event. Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

Daily Double: $800 Quick History. Marion has $2000 and a shot to take the lead away from Kate, who is on $2600. She's going for it on this: in German it was called "Heiliges Romisches Reich". "What is the Holy Roman Empire?" FOR THE DOUBLER, $4000!

Clues in category #6 are delivered on location from the National Geographic Museum in Washington, DC.

Daily Double #1: $1200 Essays. Marion has $11,600, and after a change of scoring giving Kate $11,400, she bets $2000 on this: his essay "On the Decay of the Art of Lying" was "read at a meeting of the Historical and Antiquarian Club of Hartford". "I have no idea." It was Mark Twain, dropping her to $9600.

Video Daily Double #2: $1600 Samurai: The Warrior Transformed. Kate can put it away here with $15,800 to Marion's $9600. She fronts $2000 on this from Alex: "Tsubas are sword guards. They protected the hand in battle. As you can see, they were decorated with different symbols, including this one, the flower long associated with Japan's imperial house." "What is a chrysanthemum?" Correct for $17,800.

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

Marion Marcia Kate

Here's what the book says courtesy of J-Archive.com:

- Marcia wins if she bets everything and is correct while the others are wrong.
- Marion wins if she bets at least $8201 and Kate is wrong.
- Kate wins if she bets $1401 and is correct.

Final Jeopardy! category: MATH MEN

IN 1880 HE WROTE, "WE DRAW TWO CIRCLES, AND MAKE THEM INCLUDE OR EXCLUDE OR INTERSECT ONE ANOTHER"

Correct response: who is John Venn?

Marcia's response: who is Venn? RIGHT. Wager: $8400. Total: $16,800.
Marion's response: who is Venn? RIGHT. Wager: $9000. Total: $18,600.
Kate's response: who is Venn? RIGHT. Wager: $1401. Total: $19,201.

Finalist: Kate Wilson

Marion's loss during Double Jeopardy! is Kate's gain, though she could have put it away on the second Daily Double and chose not to. She's going to have to play hardball against her opponents if she wants to win the $100,000.

One more match to determine a final.
