Semifinals: Giles/La Rivière-Gagner/Hack
February 10
Last week, 15 of America's best and brightest teachers came to Culver City to compete for $100,000 and a guaranteed slot in the next Tournament of Champions. Now, only nine remain - the five winners of last week's games and the four highest-scorers among non-winners.

This week is a win-or-go-home affair with the three semifinal winners getting a spot in the two-day finals with $100,000 at stake for the winner, $50,000 for the first runner-up, and $25,000 for the second runner-up. Everyone playing this week is guaranteed $10,000. As always, any and all prizes depend on how far up a player moved in the standings.

Adam Elkana-Hale has a date with destiny later this week. He'll have one of these three's company in 30...

HISTOR-"E"

Daily Double: $800 American Histor-"E". Eric has $600 to Kate's $1000 and Jennifer's $1400. He bets $1000 on this: its construction began in 1817 & took advantage of the Mohawk River Gap in the Appalachian Mountains. "What is the Erie Canal?" That... would've been right, but Eric blanks to go to the negative, -$400.

Daily Double #1: $1600 Chemical Element Pairs. Jennifer has $7800 to Kate's $3400 and Eric's $1200. She fronts $2000 on this: the 2 that were discovered by the Curies. "What are radium and curium?" No, the other one was polonium, leaving her with $5800.

Daily Double #2: $1200 Classical Music. Eric has $2000, enough to take away second from Kate ($3400). Jennifer has $6200. Eric bets $500 on this: Hokusai's painting "The Great Wave" graced the cover of the first edition of this Debussy work's sheet music. Eric blanks again on "La Mer", leaving him with $1500.

Usually we would consult our friends at J-Archive.com, but once again, as was the case yesterday, it's Jennifer's game to lose.

Final Jeopardy! category: BROADWAY MUSICALS

WINNER OF A TONY FOR BEST MUSICAL, IT CULMINATES WITH AN INDUCTION INTO THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME

Correct response: what is "Jersey Boys"?

Eric's response: what is Billy Elliot? WRONG. Wager: $0. Total: $5900.
Kate's response: what is Rock of Ages? WRONG. Wager: $6600. Total: $0.
Jennifer's response: what is Jersey Boys? CORRECT. Wager doesn't matter.

Finalist: Jennifer Giles

Jennifer owned this game from start to finish. If she can play as consistently as she has been and put up numbers like this, the $100,000 is all but hers. For the moment, like Alex said, there will be no beard-off this week.

The last of the semifinalists take the field next time.
