Preliminaries: Alexander/Hack/McKenna
February 4
The newest in Jeopardy!'s line of grand challenges is coming around again, with fifteen of America's greatest teachers being honored by coming to play the great American quiz show of record. At stake, $100,000 and a shot at $250,000 later on in the next Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions.

What challenges await these educators? How will they rise to meet them? The answers to these questions could be worth $100,000 for the winner, $50,000 for the first runner-up, and $25,000 for the second runner-up. Semifinalists are guaranteed $10,000, while everyone who competes gets $5000. Any and all prizes depend on how far up a player moved in the standings.

Colin O'Grady and Lydia Cuffman are going to the show next week. Who moves to the head of the class today?

Tracy Alexander
Tucson, AZ
Walden Grove HS
Eric Hack
Cape Charles, VA
Broadwater Academy
MaryLou McKenna
Harwich, MA
Barnstable HS

Lydia has the honor, and will start the Jeopardy! round...

Category 6 will, of course, be delivered by the Voice of Jeopardy!, Johnny Gilbert.

Daily Double: $1000 Broadway Musicals by Song. MaryLou has $2400, close behind Tracy's $3400 and Eric's $3600. She fronts $1400 on this: "We're Not Gonna Take It" & "Don't Stop Believin'". "What is 'Rock of Ages'?" That's right... but MaryLou blanks, leaving her with $1000.

At the end of Jeopardy!...

$3,200 $3,400 $1,600
Tracy Eric MaryLou

It should be noted that in light of Sony's hacking scandal, Eric's hometown banner, which read "Hack Attack!", has been digitally altered to read "Good luck".

Daily Double #1: $1200 They Said It. Tracy has $4400 to Eric's $8600. MaryLou has $4000, but what will Tracy go in for? She tries $4000 on this: "The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time". "Who is Patrick Henry?" No, it was Thomas Jefferson, dropping her to $400.

Daily Double #2: $1200 The National Inventors Hall of Fame. Tracy has $400 to MaryLou's $4800, but the game has belonged to Eric with $16,200. Tracy puts up $2000 on this: he gave his name to a pressure-ignited internal combustion engine & was also a linguist. "Who is Diesel?" That's right, but McCormack drops her to -$1600.

At the end of Double Jeopardy!, this game is Eric's to lose......

-$1,600 $17,800 $6,800
Tracy Eric MaryLou

... but MaryLou still has a chance at a wild card. But this is as far as Tracy goes.

Final Jeopardy! category: STATE FLAGS

IT IS MENTIONED IN THE MOTTO ON MINNESOTA'S FLAG & IS DEPICTED ON ALASKA'S

Correct response: what is the North Star?

MaryLou's response: what is a bear? WRONG. Wager: $3800. Total: $3000.
Eric's response: what is Ursa Major? WRONG. Wager doesn't matter.

Semifinalist: Eric Hack

It was a very underwhelming game to start, but Eric made it his to finish, not giving his opponents any chance to get in the game. But as much as he won it, the others have lost it. At least MaryLou is still alive.

We'll name six of the final nine tomorrow.
