Semifinals: Elkana-Hale/Cuffman/McLaughlin
February 9
Last week, 15 of America's best and brightest teachers came to Culver City to compete for $100,000 and a guaranteed slot in the next Tournament of Champions. Now, only nine remain - the five winners of last week's games and the four highest-scorers among non-winners.

This week is a win-or-go-home affair with the three semifinal winners getting a spot in the two-day finals with $100,000 at stake for the winner, $50,000 for the first runner-up, and $25,000 for the second runner-up. Everyone playing this week is guaranteed $10,000. As always, any and all prizes depend on how far up a player moved in the standings.

Our first semifinal begins with these three.

Daily Double: $400 Leaves. Lydia has $3800 to Adam's $4800. Erin is in the red by $200. Lydia bets $2000 on this: "Life is so beautiful", says this fictional Italian American before dying in his garden. "Who is Casanova?" No, it's Don Vito Corleone, leaving her with $1800.

Daily Double #1: $1600 The Merry Wives of Windsor. Adam bets $1200 on this: Elizabeth Bowles-Lyon married Albert in 1923, 13 years before he got this new name. "What is King George VI?" ... IS RIGHT for $12,400!

Daily Double #2: $1600 South of the Equator. Adam, in the lead by about $7000, bets $3000 on this: this island nation with a directional name splits oil revenues with Australia, not its old master Indonesia. "What is East Timor?" RIGHT for $17,000!

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

$19,800 $7,000 $9,200
Adam Lydia Erin

Usually we would consult our friends at J-Archive.com, but as you can see, it's Adam's game to lose.

Final Jeopardy! category: 19th CENTURY WRITERS

AFTER HIS DEATH, HE WAS GIVEN FULL MILITARY HONORS IN GREECE BEFORE HIS BODY WAS RETURNED HOME FOR BURIAL AT HIS BARONIAL SEAT

Correct response: who was Lord Byron?

Lydia's response: who is Lord Byron? CORRECT. Wager: $0. Total: $7000.
Erin's response: who is Lord Byron? CORRECT. Wager: $9000. Total: $18,200.
Adam's response: who is Tennyson? WRONG. Wager: $1300. Total: $18,500.

Finalist: Adam Elkana-Hale

That was a potentially-scary moment. Had Adam not known what he was doing, he could've all but ceded the spot on finalist's row to Erin. Luckily his front game play proved to everyone that yes, he knew EXACTLY what he was doing.

Three more semifinalists next time.
