Preliminaries: Jackson/McLaughlin/O'Grady
February 2
The newest in Jeopardy!'s line of grand challenges is coming around again, with fifteen of America's greatest teachers being honored by coming to play the great American quiz show of record. At stake, $100,000 and a shot at $250,000 later on in the next Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions.

What challenges await these educators? How will they rise to meet them? The answers to these questions could be worth $100,000 for the winner, $50,000 for the first runner-up, and $25,000 for the second runner-up. Semifinalists are guaranteed $10,000, while everyone who competes gets $5000. Any and all prizes depend on how far up a player moved in the standings.

And it all starts, wait for it..... RIGHT NOW!

Daily Double #1: $1200 British Nicknames. Colin is way out in front with $16,200 to Martha's $8400 and Erin's $2800. He bets $3000 on this: "the Last King of America". "Who is George II?" Missed it by THAT much. It was George III. He's down to $13,200.

Daily Double #2: $1600 Organizations. Martha can regain the lead from Colin with $9200 to his $16,400... or she can drop behind Erin's $5600. She bets $4000 on this: this Utah institute is devoted to discovering & training new filmmakers, composers & theater artists. "What is the Sundance Institute?" That would be right, but "Burning Man" is wrong. She almost said Sundance, but we all know where almost only counts. She's down to $5200 and it's all but a sure thing for Colin.

At the end of Double Jeopardy!, the game is Colin's to lose...

... HOWEVER the battle is not yet lost. It's important to remember at this phase the four wild-cards for non-winners.

Final Jeopardy! category: LIBRARIES

THE STREET ADDRESS OF HIS PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY IS 40 PRESIDENTIAL DRIVE

Correct response: who is Ronald Reagan?

Martha's response: who is GHW Bush? WRONG. Wager: $4800. Total: $400.
Erin's response: who is Reagan? CORRECT. Wager: $5000. Total: $12,600.
Colin's response: who is Clinton? CORRECT. Wager doesn't matter.

Semifinalist: Colin O'Grady

Erin and Martha had no choice but to go for it to try and get in as a wild card. For Erin, the dream may yet continue. For Colin, it's all but a guarantee, as he could've said "President McNugget" and still get in.

One semifinalist down, eight to go. Come back next time to see what happens.
