2000s: Falk/Jennings/Kailasanath
April 3
In 1984, "Jeopardy!", the Merv Griffin creation that provided the answers and asked for the questions, returned to the airwaves in first-run syndication. Thirty years and more than 6000 episodes later, it stands as the gold standard for quiz shows today, and this year, we celebrate with a year-long tournament featuring some of the greatest champions to ever play the game: The Battle of the Decades.

This week, 15 of the greatest contestants of the 2000s return to compete. The winner of each game will return in May to compete for $1 million and the title of Champion of the Decades. Runners-up will receive $5000 each.

Last time, Larissa Kelly played a dominating front game, but Russ Schumacher had daring wagers to end up with the third seat for the 2000s bracket. Seat #4 is going to go to one of THESE greats...

Daily Double: $1000 Fairly Recent News. Ken has the lead with $6400, $3400 on Vinita. He fronts $3600 on this: after this leader's death in 2013, Citgo facilities across the US flew their flags at half-staff. "Who is Hugo Chavez?" RIGHT for $10,000!

Daily Double #1: $800 In the Bookstore. Ken still leads with $11,200. He bets $8800, saying that he might hate himself in the morning, on this: "The Bully Pulpit" is about the Golden Age of Journalism & the relationship of these 2 presidents. "Who are Roosevelt & Taft?" Which one? "Theodore." RIGHT for $20,000!

Daily Double #2: $2000 Isotopes. The game is not out of reach yet, but Michael only has $5200 to Ken's $20,000. He bets all of it on this: the 60 isotope of this element has replaced radium in cancer treatment because it's safer. "What is barium?" No, it's cobalt.

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

Michael Ken Vinita

This is strictly a win-or-go-home situation, with the runners-up taking $5000, while the winner moves on to the tournament quarterfinals.... and that looks to be Ken, because it's his game to lose.

Final Jeopardy! category: 19th CENTURY POLITICS

IN 1884 GEORGE PILLSBURY BECAME MAYOR OF THIS CITY

Correct response: what is Minneapolis

Vinita's response: what is Buffalo? WRONG. Wager: $2000. Total: $1600
Michael's response: what is Philadelphia? WRONG. Wager: $2400. Total: $2400
Ken's response: what is Boston? WRONG. Wager: $3200. Total: $23,600.

QUARTERFINALIST: Ken Jennings

Greatest. Of all. Time. Now he has a chance to prove it.

Tomorrow, the final three more greats of the 2000s.
