1990s: Abbott/Dawson/Perry
March 6
In 1984, "Jeopardy!", the Merv Griffin creation that provided the answers and asked for the questions, returned to the airwaves in first-run syndication. Thirty years and more than 6000 episodes later, it stands as the gold standard for quiz shows today, and this year, we celebrate with a year-long tournament featuring some of the greatest champions to ever play the game: The Battle of the Decades.

This week, 15 of the greatest contestants of the 1990s return to compete. The winner of each game will return in May to compete for $1 million and the title of Champion of the Decades. Runners-up will receive $5000 each.

Yesterday, Robin Carroll joined Pam Mueller and Rachael Schwartz on Winner's Row when she crushed her opponents in a Final Jeopardy! stumper. If the 80s were the decade of the men, then the 90s belong to the women, which is good for one of these three people...

Daily Double: $800 Internal Fluidity. Mark leads with $6200 to $3800 for Dave. Claudia has $1800. Mark bets $3000 on this: plasma is blood without cells; this is blood without cells & clotting factors. "What is serum?" That would've been right, but lymph drops him to $3200.

At the end of Jeopardy!...

Daily Double #1: $1200 Consider That a Divorce. Mark leads by $3000, $10,800 to Dave's $6600 and Claudia's $7800. He bets $800 on this: their storybook royal romance produced 2 daughters but ended in 1996. "Who are Princess Grace of Monaco & Prince Albert?" Nope, it was Prince Andrew & Sarah Ferguson, leaving him with $10,000.

Daily Double #2: $2000 Islands in the Stream. Mark finds all three with $13,600 to Dave's $9800 and Claudia's $6200. He bets $2000 on this: Elephantine Island & Kitchener's Island. "What is the Ganges River?" No, it was the Nile, leaving him with $11,600.

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

Dave Mark Claudia

This is strictly a win-or-go-home situation, with the runners-up taking $5000, while the winner moves on to the tournament quarterfinals. The strategy from J-Archive.com...

- CLAUDIA WINS IF... Mark somehow bets everything and is wrong, while she bets $600 and ISN'T.
- MARK WINS IF... he bets $1999 and is correct while Dave bets to win and is wrong.
- DAVE WINS IF... he bets $11,001 and is correct.

Final Jeopardy! category: PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING AUTHORS

HE'S THE MOST RECENT WINNER OF 2 PULITZER PRIZES FOR FICTION, WINNING IN 1982 & 1991 FOR BOOKS IN THE SAME SERIES

Correct response: who is John Updike?

Claudia's response: who is John Updike? CORRECT. Wager: $5800. Total: $11,600.
Mark's response: who is Updike? CORRECT. Wager: $1999. Total: $15,599.
Dave's response: who is John Le Carre? WRONG. Wager: $11,001. Total: $5199

QUARTERFINALIST: Mark Dawson

Mark did what he had to do in the Final and was correct. Dave also did what he had to do in the Final. As for being correct... not so much. He joins Rachael Schwartz, Pam Mueller, and Robin Carroll in the quarterfinals.

We round out the 90s next time.
