In 1984, "Jeopardy!", the
Merv Griffin creation that provided the answers and
asked for the questions, returned to the airwaves in
first-run syndication. Thirty years and more than 6000
episodes later, it stands as the gold standard for quiz
shows today, and this year, we celebrate with a
year-long tournament featuring some of the greatest
champions to ever play the game: The Battle of the
Decades.
This week, 15 of the
greatest contestants of the 80s return to compete. The
winner of each game will return in May to compete for $1
million and the title of Champion of the Decades.
Runners-up will receive $5000 each.
Game 1 features THESE

India has -$400. He bets $1500 on this: "But the Lord sent out a great wind into
the sea, and there was a mighty tempest." "What is Jonah?" He's up to $4900.

Daily Double #1: $1200
Latin. India finds it with $8000 after all three
players bounce around the board. Chuck still leads
with $11,900 to Jim's $3200. She bets half her
stash, or $4000, on this: this phrase literally
means "until seasickness". "What is ad nauseum?"
Pay. That lady. Her money. She has the lead with
$12,000.
Daily Double #2: $800 Physiology.
Jim is up to $4800 to Chuck's $11,900. But this one belongs to India with her
$14,000. She bets $1500 of it on this: when you swallow, this flap of cartilage
acts like a lid to the larynx. "What is the epiglottis?" That would've been
right, but the uvula takes her back to $12,500. Still leading, but just.

This is
strictly a win-or-go-home situation, with the runners-up
taking $5000, while the winner moves on to the
tournament quarterfinals. The strategy from J-Archive.com...
- JIM WINS
IF... he goes all-in and is correct, while India and
Chuck bet against each other and are wrong.
- CHUCK WINS IF... he bets $10,299 and is correct while
India bets against him and is wrong.
- INDIA WINS IF... she bets $14,901 and is correct.

Correct response: who was John
Quincy Adams?
Jim's response: who was John Quincy Adams? CORRECT. Wager: $3000. Total:
$6200.
Chuck's response: who is John Q. Adams? CORRECT. Wager: $16,700. Total:
$33,400.
India's response: who is Madison? WRONG. Wager doesn't matter.
QUARTERFINALIST: Chuck Forrest
This was
India's game to lose... and she lost it. We didn't see
much of the game play that made Chuck Forrest the name
he was in Jeopardy! lore. But what we did see... going
for it and winning. Chuck will take on the rest of the
field in May.
Meanwhile,
three more players from the 80s and early 90s play next
time.
