2000s: Kavanaugh/Kelly/Schumacher
April 2
In 1984, "Jeopardy!", the Merv Griffin creation that provided the answers and asked for the questions, returned to the airwaves in first-run syndication. Thirty years and more than 6000 episodes later, it stands as the gold standard for quiz shows today, and this year, we celebrate with a year-long tournament featuring some of the greatest champions to ever play the game: The Battle of the Decades.

This week, 15 of the greatest contestants of the 2000s return to compete. The winner of each game will return in May to compete for $1 million and the title of Champion of the Decades. Runners-up will receive $5000 each.

Last time, Roger Craig completely steamrolled the competition thanks to two all-in Daily Doubles. He now awaits the rest of the field, which includes one of these three players...

Daily Double: $800 Local Food Movement. Larissa leads with $2800... and she's GOING FOR IT! For $5600... A main function of the large intestine is the absorption of these current-conducting compounds. "What are electrolytes?" FOR THE DOUBLER, $5600!

Daily Double #1: $1200 Literary Titles. Larissa has $13,600 and the lead, betting $3600 on this: the title of this 1943 bestseller refers to an Ailanthus. "What is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn?" CORRECT for $17,200!

Daily Double #2: $800 Women on US Stamps. Russ can come back and get back into this game with a bet of $5000 on this: in 2005, for what would have been her 100th birthday, the U.S. & Sweden issued stamps featuring this movie legend. "Who is Greta Garbo?" And he's back in it with $15,400!

At the end of Double Jeopardy!...

This is strictly a win-or-go-home situation, with the runners-up taking $5000, while the winner moves on to the tournament quarterfinals.

- Tom wins if... he goes all-in and Larissa does something stupid.
- Russ wins if... he goes in for $600 and is right, while Larissa goes in and is wrong.
- Larissa wins if... she bets $8001 and is correct.

Final Jeopardy! category: MONARCHS

IN 2005 THE KUL SHARIF MOSQUE OF TATARSTAN WAS REOPENED 453 YEARS AFTER IT WAS DESTROYED BY THIS MAN

Correct response: who was Ivan the Terrible?

Tom's response: who Genghis Khan? WRONG. Wager: $5600. Total: $0
Russ' response: who is Constantine? WRONG. Wager: $0. Total: $15,400
Larissa's response: who is Suleiman? WRONG. Wager: $8001. Total: $14,799.

QUARTERFINALIST: Russ Schumacher

Russ pulls the first upset of the night when he downs the first great female champ of this or any era of Jeopardy!, thanks to wise wagering in the front and end games. Can lightning strike twice? Time will tell.

Tomorrow, three more greats of the 2000s, including what many would call the greatest of all time.
