Hollywood Week: Part 4
February 14
It's been
six years since a woman won American Idol. One of the
women in tonight's sing could very well wrest the title,
but which one? And who will be in the Final 40? It's the
FINAL FINAL FINAL day of Hollywood Week.
HOLLYWOOD
Valley Performance Arts Center - Northridge
Today is the day you lay it
all on the line. And for 47 women who are dog tired, they're going to
have to dig deep if they want to be on the show. Twenty-seven voices
will be silenced... tonight.
DAY 3: The Women's Solo Sing
Angela Miller (18; Bevely,
MA; food worker) is taking a risk with an original, "You Set Me Free",
showing off her skills as a singer, a pianist, and a songwriter. Big
risk. BIG payoff. And even if this doesn't work out, this will be a
single SOMEWHERE. Ladies... the gauntlet, she is thrown. "I know so many
people at home are like 'Where do I get that song'?" Yes, Keith. Yes we
are. Pressure is on for Candice Glover and Janelle Arthur, both are in
the group. Candice (23; St. Helena Island, SC; administrative assistant)
sing "Girl on Fire" by Alicia Keys to acclaim, though it's her weakest
performance. Janelle (23; Oliver Springs, TN; fitness instructor) sings
Carrie's "I Told You So". Nicki loves her subtlety.
And then things get weird
when Zoanette Johnson (20; Tulsa, OK; habitation health specialist), as
she performs an original, "Ba Ba Da Ba Ba", in a crazy outfit... with
her drums. I don't know what was crazier, making up a song on the
spot... using the drums... dressing up like THAT.... or... the audition
itself where she stops midway, tells the band to slow it down... or
....screaming. And this is where I change the channel to "The Big Bang
Theory". ... or the Leafs-Canes game.
... Okay, let's get to the
result. Janelle... Jett Hermano... Angela Miller... Zoanette... are all
through! So is Candice. Kiara Lanier from Chicago... not so much.
And that was just the
beginning. Shubha Vedula (17; Mt. Pleasant, MI; student) wows one judge
with "When You Believe" (guess which one), Juliana Chahayed (15;
Woodland Hills, CA; student) makes a landslide performance of
"Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac, and Kez Ban (27; Durham, NC; fire
performer) will perform an original, "Flying". I... don't think she
wants to play in the Idol sandbox anymore. And... the judges put her out
of her misery. I'm sure your mom's proud.
Final group with Ashlee
Feliciano (20; East Hartford, CT; student) with Christina Perri's "A
Thousand Years". With a trill at the end. Not a bold song choice. Way
too serious, Randy says. And it just gets more depressing from there.
Melinda Ademi (19; Yonkers, NY; retail) ... SAVE US! She does with
"Price Tag" by Jessie J. Thanks for breaking the monotony, Melinda. Good
song choice, and now we know who she is, so anything less would be a
copout. What about Kree Harrison (22; Woodville, TX; demo singer), who's
about on her 15th second chance with "Stars" by Grace Potter & the
Nocturnals. We get it. You like Grace Potter. Let's see what you can do.
It's very nasal.
Lauren... Kree... Melinda...
moving on. So it's farewell from Briana Oakley, Sarina-Joi Crowe, and
Ashlee.
And that's it for the
cuts... OR IS IT!? Yeah, you know what's going to happen next. We have
more girls than we know what to do with, so we have to pare it down to
the final 20 girls AND the final 20 guys.
We start with 24 girls. Four
must leave. Lauren Mink... Holly Marie Miller... Ariel Sprague (another
returner from last year)... GONE. Which leaves us to cut one more, and
how will Randy do that? A sing-off. Stephanie Schimel (21; Milwaukee;
lingerie shop worker) sings "Home" from the reigning Idol, Phillip
Phillips. Countering that will be Rachel Hale (21; Prescott, AR;
student) with "Undone" by Haley (yeah, she was on this show too)
Reinhart. And ensured of a spot in the top 40 is...
.... RACHEL HALE!
Now to the men...
Twenty-eight singers... we need seven of them off the stage now. And
this will be all sing-off.
Adam Sanders (19; San
Antonio; musician) sings "Taking Chances" by Celine Dion. Josh Holiday
(24; Celeste, TX; caregiver/vocal coach) sings "Georgia On My Mind"...
while splitting his pants.
Peter Garrett.... Marvin
Calderon... Devon Jones... Kenny Harrison... Will White,... Tony
Foster... David Leathers Jr.... and Adam Sanders. It's over. Yes, David.
Again.
And here are your Top 40!
You want interviews, go to AmericanIdol.com. But for them, there's one
song standing between them and the public vote. SUDDEN DEATH from Vegas
next time!
