Hollywood Week: Part 2
February 7
Over 150
people received the ticket to their dreams. But now it's
a matter of hanging onto it at any and all cost. Call it
the Callbacks. Call it the Bootcamp. Call it Hell Week.
Anyway you call it, it's HOLLYWOOD BABY. Last night,
stiff cuts came hard and fast. Tonight, as we continue
into the solo sing, the cuts will continue until we're
left with 20 guys.
HOLLYWOOD
Valley Performance Arts Center - Northridge
The group is still reeling
from the cuts from earlier, but they must regroup for their final
shot... Half of the remaining 43 are going home today.
DAY 3: The Men's Solo Sing
First up is Paul Jolley (22;
Palmersville, TN; retail sales) with Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away". He
came into this defeated, so sayeth Nicki. He will not know if he has
made it into the final cut until his group of eight has sung. That group
includes Lazaro Arbos (21; Naples, FL; ice cream scoop)'s "The Edge of
Glory" by Lady Gaga, and Curtis Finch Jr. (24; St Louis; choir
director)'s "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri.
And this is what happens.
Eight people. No waiting. No rooms. Just one decision. Lazaro...
Curtis... and Paul... are THROUGH!
Next is Devin Velez (18;
Chicago; student) with "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong,
Gurpreet Singh Sarin (22; North Potomac, MD; college student) with
"Georgia On My Mind" by Ray Charles, and Cortez Shaw (22; Dallas; sales
rep) with "Sunny" by Johnny Rivers. Matheus Fernandes (22; Atlanta;
computer sales) takes on an Idol, "Stronger" by Kelly Clarkson. Nicki
calls Matheus on calling out his height. Repeatedly.
Devin... Gurpreet...
Cortez... Adam.... are through. Matheus is going home.
Nicholas Mathis (23;
Chicago; warehouse worker) is in this for her daughter. He goes into
"Locked Out of Heaven" by Bruno Mars. He's in a group with Jimmy Smith
(25; Waynesboro, TN; social worker), who sings "Landslide" by Fleetwood
Mac, and Papa Peachez (19; Jackson, MS; unemployed), who sings "Yoü and
I" by Gaga. Really? And Nicki makes it no secret that he just shot
himself in the foot.
Next decision. Nicholas...
Papa Peachez... both are done. Jimmy Smith and Johnny Keyser are in.
Nick Boddington, another
return (27; Memphis; unemployed) sings "Stars" by Grace Potter & the
Nocturnals. Charlie Askew (17; Little Rock, AR; student) tries to get
the jitters out for "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye. Nicki
thinks that it's so odd that it's right, calling him an "artist".
Nick... JDA... Mathenee
Treco... and Charlie... ALL IN!
"Jar of Hearts" seems to be
a favorite. It's sung by Burnell Taylor... Marvin Calderon... and
they're both in. Will Micah Johnston (24; Morrow, GA; US Navy seaman)
join them with "I Told You So" by Randy Travis. He's got mad talent...
but they only have so many places, and Micah will not get one of them.
Gabe Brown is on his way out, as are Sanni M'Mairura and Nate Tao.
The guys that are left have
only a few moments to celebrate before they are called back to the
stage. Eight more guys... still need to go. We'll find out who they are
next week. But first, the ladies get their shot at Hollywood.
