Preliminaries 4
January 21

It’s time to burst some bubbles as the first of the last two prelims start.

Evan Dollard
5’10” 160 lbs
Retail Manager

Son Nguyen
6’0” 165 lbs
Firefighter

ON THE CUT
Adonis Lockett
7 pts, 3’47.0 (-4)

Christine Kim
5’3” 113 lbs
Mortgage Broker

Jennifer Blum
5’6” 155 lbs
Lawyer/Football Player

ON THE CUT
Venus Ramos
12 pts, 3’37.6

Up first is Men’s Gauntlet.  They’ll be going against Titan, Mayhem, Toa, and Justice.  Evan is first and makes it close, but is able to break through the barrier with 0.4 left on the clock for the full 10.  On the other side, Son gets a heaping helping of Justice, keeping him to only 6 and a four-point deficit to start.

The women are starting off with the Wall.  Christine gets stuck with Venom while Jen gets Siren.  Siren does the up and under to yank off the lawyer, and Venom gets Christine after a good bout of yanking.  No score after 1.

Event 2 for the men is Pyramid.  Son gets Justice while Evan is given the pleasure of Wolf.  There’s a lot of picking and rolling and Evan does get close to a fast break, but Wolf closes in and no score is to be found.  The retail mgr. still has the 10-6 lead.

On we go to women’s Earthquake.  Crush gets the wrestling duty this time.  Jennifer is able to get the Glad to the edge, but she’s the one falling.  She is able to grab onto the cable, but Crush pushes her to the ground……with her foot.  That’s a no-no and Jennifer is eventually awarded 5 on technicality.  Christine earns 5 the old-fashioned way and so the women go into half-time tied at 5.

Round 3 is the Assault.  We start with the men and Militia.  It takes a bit, but Evan is able to hit near-dead center with the turret, sending the Glad in the drink and 10 points into his pocket.  Son tries to do the same, but Militia scores a headshot before getting off the gun.  Evan’s lead expands to 20-7.

We move to the women’s Assault, where Siren will be shootin’.  Jennifer duplicates Evan’s feat, hitting the top ring for 10.  Christine is able to get to the “crossbow,” but runs out of time before the assembly and shot, dropping her behind 15-8 after 3.

Round 4 for the men takes us back to the Wall.  Son is bestowed Toa and Evan has fun with Wolf again.  However, as a rock climbing instructor, Evan has no problems climbing 40 feet.  He earns the 10 points in a swift 26 seconds.  Son isn’t far behind, getting up in 32 seconds, but he now faces a 30-12 deficit.

The final event for the women is Hit and Run.  Doing the former will be the team of Crush, Stealth, Fury, and Hellga.  Christine has no problem getting to 10 points, but 12 is just too far.  Jennifer is able to get to 8 before she gets KO’d by Hellga on what would’ve been her final pass anyway.  However, she maintains a 23-18 lead.

And now it’s time for the all-important Eliminator.  As an added incentive, there are now times to beat in order to make it to the semis.  Evan has a 9 second lead on Son, which pretty much locked him into a wire-to-wire victory.  What came as the real shocker was that he won in 1’29.0, demolishing every other time set forth before.  On the other side, Christine’s 2.5 second lead evaporates in the water, but she’s able to regain it after the cargo net.  She loses a shoe on the Barrel Roll, and takes off the other by the Hand Bike.  However, this may have cost her as she gets tripped up on the Travellator and runs out of gas, allowing Jennifer to overtake her, but her time of 4’07.1 takes her nowhere but to the exit.

So in the end, Adonis and Christine gain the title of Winners, but Losers.  Two more are going to get that distinction as the prelims conclude next week.
