Scorpion King Hunter
March 24 - Leg 6

PREVIOUSLY ON THE AMAZING RACE...David & Connor (Team Ribbon Wearers) just could not continue as David's Achilles tear was getting worse and worse. So they went to the PIT STOP and got themselves Philiminated. The other seven teams flew from Bali to Hanoi, Vietnam. They sat through a socialist muscial number and found the write poster about it and then split to either play Chinese chess or cook a Vietnamese meal. At a DOUBLE U-TURN, Joey & Meghan (Team Cute Activate!) were turned by Leg winners Pam & Winnie (Team Scrappers)...and then turned Chuck & Wynona (Team Roll Tide!). Fortunately, since a team gave up, all teams are still Racing. Seven teams, to be precise, Race for the million...who will be leaving...NEXT?!

PIT STOP #5
VIETNAM NATIONAL MUSEUM OF HISTORY

HANOI, VIETNAM
2240 LOCAL TIME

In the capital of one of the few remaining bastions of Communism in the world, two best friends rip open the clue to start the sixth Leg. And it states:

ROUTE INFO

FLEE TO THE DESERT!

Make your way to the city of Maun in the the Kalahari Desert. Once you arrive, look for Mack Air and sign up for one of three charter flights to the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. Once there, you'll find your next clue. You need to figure out where you're going and tell the guard at tha Haprotravel Agency the correct country before he can let you in to book the flight.

(The teams must work out that both Maun and the National Park are 6000 miles away in the African country of Botswana.)

Pam & Winnie go to a hotel and ask for internet use to find out where they're going. When they figure out it's Botswana, they get "so excited"! But they're wary; if Joey & Meghan find out the girls U-TURNed them...ho boy. The other teams deprat at the following (local) times:

Max & Katie (Team Honeymooners): 2334
Mona & Beth (Team Rollergames): 2337
Bates & Anthony (Team Goons): 2339
Caroline & Jennifer (Team Cowboy Descendants): 2346
Joey & Meghan: 0047
Chuck & Wynona: 0326

Did you know Katie has a doctorate...and has been keeping it on the DL all through the Race? The roller derby moms just go to the airport. The hockey players think Maun's in Kenya. The country singers are psyched about going to Africa (though they ALSO think "Kenya"). The YouTube hosts are getting paranoid. And the married 'Bama couple...they're just relieved to still BE here!

HAPROTRAVEL AGENCY
HANOI, VIETNAM

Team Scrappers arrive at a travel agency. They tell the guard "Botswana" and he lets them enter. The earliest flight (connecting through Hong Kong and Johannesburg, South Africa): 10:45am. Assuming everyone works out where they're going, the Great Equalizer strikes. Team Honeymooners get it right as well and book the same flight. Team Rollergames asks someone with a smartphone for info about Maun. Team Cowboy Descendants guess "Kenya"...and get denied. But Katie mouths "Botswana" to them and the girls enter...with Mona & Beth right behind. Team Goons guesses Kenya, but Katie helps THEM out, too. Soon all the teams have a flight to Botswana...except Team Roll Tide! they arrive and start guessing countries: Kenya, Australia, Turkey, Bangladesh, "Republic of the Paraguay"...all wrong answers. They STUMBLE upon Botswana and are let in to book the flight.

HANOI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
HANOI, VIETNAM

As all the teams await their flight, Chuck & Wynona see the team they're certain U-TURNed them in the last Leg: Joey & Meghan. When the young couple approached them, Wynona said, "Thanks." Joey claims they weren't sure who was in front of behind them so...they chose at random (though, technically, they just didn't want Mona & Beth U-TURNed as well). Pam & Winnie tell the others about the trip they won...but don't admit they U-TURNed Team Cute Activate! Doesn't matter to Joey & Meghan, though; they say EVERYONE should watch out for them in...

MAUN, BOTSWANA

The fifth largest town in the country, founded 98 years ago, welcomes the tired travellers. And, wouldn'tcha know it, the travel agency's RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET. So it's a mad scramble to the chalkboard to sign up for flights. When the dust clears,...

FLIGHT 1 (9am): Teams Cowoy Descendants and Goons
FLIGHT 2 (9:15am): Teams Honeymooners and Cute Activate!
FLIGHT 3 (9:30am): Teams Rollergames, Roll Tide! and Scrappers

It stinks going from first to worst like Pam & Winnie...but it stinks even more that the oldest team in the Race - Chuck & Wynona - are in the back of the pack yet again!

The next morning, Caroline & Jennifer join Bates & Anthony in a cramped prop plane (the guys' dream, I'd wager) to their next destination. They enjoy the scenery as the other two planes take of (at 15-minute intervals) all headed to...

XUMAGA AIRSTRIP
MAKGADIKGADI PANS NATIONAL PARK
OUTSIDE OF MAUN, BOTSWANA

Once the site of a lake the size of Switzerland, now it's a field of salt and other minerals (for that's what a "pan" is, geologically speaking) teaming with life. The two top teams are a bit nervous landing on the airstrip but the pilot makes a relatively smooth landing. Team Cowboy Descendants and Team Goons pick up their next clue:

ROUTE INFO

TIME FOR A DRIVE THROUGH THE DESERT!

Drive yourselves down Old Xhumaga Road, following the marked route, and search for your next clue.

You'll find your self-drive vehicles in the airport parking lot.

The lot's a fair jog down the road but it's nothing for these athletic folks. 15 minutes late, Max & Katie follow Joey & Meghan to the lot and down the road. And 15 minutes after THEM, the last three teams go in pursuit down...

OLD XUMAGA ROAD
MAKGADIKGADI PANS NATIONAL PARK
OUTSIDE OF MAUN, BOTSWANA

The clue's not that hard to find; a bunch of native bushmen have arrived along the side of the road near the jars which hold said clue. They each get a jar ajar (tee hee!), pry the clue out of it and read the next:

ROADBLOCK

WHO WANTS TO MAKE A NEW FRIEND?

The Kalahari bushmen are some of the oldest inhabitants of southern Africa, having survived here for tens of thousands of years. One team member must join one of the groups of bushmen standing nearby on a scorpion hunt. You must dig down into a burrow until you find a scorpion. A bushman will then pick up the scorpion and place it in the jar this clue came in. He will then lead you and your partner to a stump where the next clue can be picked up.

Bates and Caroline choose to dig for the poisonous little buggers. Groups of three bushmen are chosen and the two groups head out onto the pan. While Bates group jumps out into the lead, Caroline's group stops upon seeing a lion and scramble up a tree. Caroline doesn't follow, though, not knowing the danger. As the hunt continues, the second group arrives. Joey and Max are picked to do this 'BLOCK. Joey's a bit freaked when he learns scorpions are involved. Max just enjoys the trek.

Bates' group finds a burrow and starts the dig before letting Bates go...with his bare hand, no less. Not sure that's a hot idea. Caroline's group likewise finds a hidey-hole of the arachnid. She's USED to spiders...but she's afraid the little guy will sting and split once they find it. Bates then finds one...and one of the bushmen grabs it by its stinger. Bates even allows it to pinch it with its pincers before it's placed in the jar. So the hockey guy has a new friend...and the other three are still looking for theirs.

The final grouping arrives. Mona decides to go for Team Rollergames and Pam for Team Scrappers. And...are my eyes deceiving me?! Wynona is FINALLY doing a ROADBLOCK on her own free will?!? Well, since Chuck's up to 5 out of the maximum 7, I guess it's about TIME she gets in the game. She's as nervous as an Auburn undergrad strolling through the U. of Alabama courtyard in full team clothing, though.

Bates returns to Anthony with tjhe bushman and the scorpion. The bushmen brings them to the stump and they draw out this next clue:

ROUTE INFO

TAKE YOUR THREE BUSHMEN FOR A RIDE!

Bring your bushmen with you as you continue to drive down Old Xhumaga Road. They'll direct you to your next clue down the road.

The bushmen pile in the back of the off-road vehicle and Team Goons drive off in first with them. Meanwhile, Caroline finally finds one...and it DOES start to dart, but the bushman grabs it...and even puts it in his MOUTH (though still holding the stinger; they claim it's to clean it). Into the jar it goes and back to Jennifer THEY go so that they can leave in second. Max brought along a golf glove in case he had to handle anything gross. But it's Mona who is lucky enough to find one next. As she leaves, though, Max likewise finds one. Mona & Beth leave in third, Max & Katie in fourth.

Joey's the next to find one...and he is FREAKED by it. The bushmen say he has to touch it before it goes in the jar...so he swallows his fear and does so...though he all but screams like a school girl while it's in his hand. Needless to say, he is SO relieved when it's in the jar. He & Meghan leave the DETOUR in fifth, leaving Chuck and Winnie (almost literally) in the dust.

Meanwhile, down the road, Bates & Anthony are laughing it up with the bushmen. Bates then finds a Clue Box on the road, so they let the bushmen out and grab their next:

DETOUR

FIRE or FOWL

FIRE: The bushmen out here have no need for lighters or matches. Travel with the bushmen to a nearby camp. There, the bushmen will show you how to light a fire using nothing more than two sticks, dry grass and zebra manure. Once you get a flame, you must light the elder bushman's pipe. When successful, the elder's aide will hand you your next clue.

FOWL: Guinea fowl are a common meat source for the bushman. You must build a guinea fowl trap using an egg, string and sticks, following the example of the bushmen. Once the trap is set, one of you must act LIKE a fowl and spring the trap. Once the trap is sprung, a bushman will hand you your next clue.

NOTES: On your way to the detour, your bushmen will teach you various animal calls and signals. Also, you cannot start your detour until you watch the demonstration in its entirety and the bushmen give you the signal to start.

The men of the ice choose to make FIRE. They continue to laugh it up as the bushmen make the calls and signals, hoping they scare lions away. Team Cowboy Descendants then arrive and choose FIRE as well. When the men arrive, they think it's "elephant poo" instead of zebra...but they're amazed at how fast it takes them. Grass, then excrement, then one stick with an indent in it under it and one more-rounded stick to rub like we've seen in the National Geographic specials. When the girls showed up, Team Goons got nervous, knowing it takes finesse as well as strength to to this task. As they continue, Team Rollergames and Team Honeymooners arrive at the Clue Box. They both choose FIRE over FOWL..

Back at the ROADBLOCK, Pam's group finds a scorpion...and Pam has to fight the urge to run like hell when she sees it. But, as she gets it in the jar, Wynona finds HERSELF one. She doesn't seem freaked at all of the scorpion. But she hustles back. Team Scrappers and Team Roll Tide! head down the road with their bushmen in sixth and last respectively, but not that far apart.

Team Goons and Team Cowboy Descendants are rubbing those sticks hard and fast, trying to make a spark. But it's Bates & Anthony who get it going first. (Hey, maybe they should tryout for Survivor next, eh?) The elder leans his pipe into the flames and the aide hands them this clue:

ROUTE INFO

MAKE YOUR WAY TO THE NEXT PIT STOP!

Travel on foot, with your bushmen, to the bluffs overlooking the Boteti River and Meno A Kwena Safari Camp, the PIT STOP for this Leg of the Race.

WARNING! The last team to check-in MAY BE ELIMINATED!

The bros gather their bushmen to go...but not before giving Caroline & Jennifer some help on how to start their fire. As they travel to the camp, Mona & Beth and Max & Katie arrive...and the girls get nervous.

PIT STOP #6
MENO A KWENA SAFARI CAMP

MAKGADIKGADI PANS NATIONAL PARK, BOTSWANA

Team Goons huff it to the mat like defensemen doing backwards-skating drills. Phil is there with a guide who greets them. Phil is happy to proclaim Bates & Anthony Team # 1 for the second time this Race and to grant them a five-night trip to the island of Phuket in Thailand thanks to Travelocity(TM). They're glad to be out of the cellar again and are ready to try harder to STAY here.

Team Cute Activate! arrives at the DETOUR and, like everyone else, chooses FIRE over FOWL. They join the other teams in the village...and they join them in near-futility in making the fire. Luckily, Pam & Winnie arrive at the DETOUR and choose FOWL, right ahead of Chuck & Wynona...who LIKEWISE decide on FOWL (because, hey, Chuck loves to trap).

The four-way fight for FIRE is fast and furious...and, furthermore, still futile. Some teams wonder if they should switch to FOWL instead. After a little longer, Caroline & Jennifer opt out and decide to do FOWL instead. Joey & Meghan follow suit, right behind the girls. Mona & Beth bail as well, leaving Max & Katie still struggling...but willing to try for a little longer.

The teams who arrived last at the DETOUR watch their bushman create a fowl snare, complete with a large egg for bait. Needless to say, Team Scrappers are nervous about Team Roll Tide!'s "expertise" in hunting and trapping. While Chuck picks up some ground, it's Pam & Winnie who spring their own trap first and depart from the DETOUR in second.

Once everyone was at FIRE...now everyone is at FOWL as the four teams who failed to help the elder smoke his pipe arrive while Chuck & Wynona work on their snare. And, man, are the 'Bama bride and groom EVER happy to see them; they now know they have a chance!

Pam & Winnie are SO happy to be Team # 2!

Team Roll Tide! are the next to act as fowl for their own trap...and it works like a charm. They leave in third...just as the snare WHACKs Caroline in the noggin from being placed poorly. Mona's does the same thing, frustrating her. Team Honeymooners know they were last to this party...but they keep plugging away since y'never know on this Race what'll happen.

What happens next is that Chuck & Wynona have their best finish EVER as Team # 3! Their hopes are back up since they beat the younger teams.

On that subject, Team Cute Activate! - being descendants of carpenters - find building the snare rather easy. They spring it and depart the DETOUR in fourth. Team Cowboy Descendants then spring theirs (it only catches Jennifer's thumb but that counts) and follow in fifth. Joey & Meghan are Team # 4, Caroline & Jennifer are # 5.

So the roller-derby moms and recently-married couple battle to get their snare up and running to stave off last place. Team Honeymooners finish theirs first...but Max grabbing the egg doesn't spring it. As they retry to make it...Team Rollergames are successful! They leave in sixth...and leave Max & Katie to wonder what went wrong.

But, then,...Mona & Beth forget "TAR 101": READ YOUR CLUES CAREFULLY! They decide to run back to the parking lot and DRIVE up the path...obviously missing the "on foot" part of the clue! Fortunately, Max & Katie spring their trap. They leave the DETOUR in last...but at least they're going on foot as the clue states!

When Team Rollergames arrive at the lot, they notice all the vehicles in the lot and realized they were NOT supposed to drive. Now it's a foot race to the PIT STOP!

Two tired Americans hit the mat and pant heavily. And Phil tells them...

"Mona & Beth...you are Team # 6!".

Up to the mat comes Max & Katie. Phil gives confirms their greatest fear: they are the last team to arrive.

Max feels sick....

...until Phil tells them this is the first Non-Elimination Leg (N.E.L.) of the Race and the honeymoon's not over yet! Of course, there's still a SPEED BUMP to overcome in the next Leg but...they can handle it! They made a dumb mistake this Leg...maybe someone else will do it NEXT Leg.
