Everyone is at least a quarter away from
having built their full team.
Day 3 at Universal Studios, and we
welcome Colton Swon & his brother Zach (23, 27; Muskogee, OK). They've
grown up around music, and they've grown up around the church. Zach is a
born drummer. Together, they want to go to Nashville and get a record
deal. This... is the next best thing. They're playing on fumes, but
they're playing "American Girl" by Tom Petty. And fellow Okie Blake buys
in, as does... Shakira... and Usher (?!) is in. We just heard our first
"Swon-cert", but who'll ride these guys out to their Swon song? Shakira
is talking herself out of a group, as she says that the logical thing
would be to join Blake's team. So they do that. Good job, hija.
From Dallas comes Taylor Beckham (17),
who comes to us having trained to be in the Olympics as a gymnast. She
says it took a toll on her body, so she turned in her leotard for a
microphone. We may be ready for some Mary J up in here, but will Taylor
be saying "I'm Goin' Down"? She is NOT, because Usher is hitting it...
So is Shakira. So does she go with the guy who knows her music or the
girl who knows her swag? Shakira was a gymnast, too, after all. But
she's not her coach today. USHER is. Should be noted that Adam was
busy throwing Shakira under the bus.
Sam Alves (23, Fortaleza, Brazil) is
looking to be discovered... again. As a baby in Brazil, he was left in
the care of adoptive parents when his biological mother left him in a
box on a doorstep. When he was 4, his family emigrated to the US in
search of a better life. Will his American dream become reality? It all
starts today with "Feeling Good". And the coaches.... are not feeling
it. Ouch. Everything happens for a reason, Sam. Even this. Good luck.
A children's vocal teacher, Karina
Iglesias (35; Miami) lives by the motto, "Learn the music you love".
That's the message she passes on to our youth. She used to sing with her
grandmother in church until a stroke in 2004 robbed her of her gift.
Karina will try to do her proud with Melissa Etheridge's "I'm the Only
One". In SPANGLISH. Adam and Blake are at a Mexican standoff as to
who'll push first. Turns out they both wait until the last possible
second... to HIT IT. Shakira... missed out. After Blake compares her
singing to hitting a gas pedal.... "I'm gonna pick ADAM." That brings
the tallies for the teams to FOUR. And a fake shake from Adam... and a
bro-hug.
Garrett Gardner (17; Ringwood, NJ) was on
the show last season... and did NOT get picked up. This time, instead of
singing for his departed father, he's 100 percent in it for himself,
knowing that his father is going to be proud of him no matter what. Take
2.... here's "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes. And... history
DOES NOT repeat itself! Shakira hits it! And since she's the only one,
no decision need be made, but Adam has something to say anyway... "I
KNOW YOU!" Yeah. Shakira is still angry that he wasn't picked last
season. She follows that up with J'Sun. Adam follows with Duncan
Kamakana, and Usher won the battle for Chelsea M.
Holly Tucker (19, Waco, TX) is a member
of Baylor University's Golden Wave marching band. She hopes to trade in
her alto sax for some country tones. She has performed with her parents
all throughout Texas, but she's hoping to strike out on her own tonight
with Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love". Adam's in... And there goes
Shakira... and there goes Usher. And Blake makes it four in record time.
Now it becomes a war as to who, if anyone, can snag a country artist out
of Blake's thumb. Let's see... Usher started in church... his mom's his
manager... and Adam sang in temple, so there's something. But she
picks... BLAKE. You know, if you stop talking country and Blake in the
same sentence, you won't have that problem.
Many artists failed to find a team with
the coaches' expectations at an all-time high. Will Landon Medvec (20,
Rosemount, MN) turn it around? He, by trade, is a mover. He's moving his
baggage to the Voice stage for the first time with James Morrison's "You
Give Me Something" (C-Note: MY favorite song of the last 10 years). And
there's a reason that only James can pull that one off. That song is
suited for his voice. Not so much Landon's. No coach.
Next is Michelle Chamuel (26, Amherst,
MA), who's here representing nerdy introverts. She plays in a plan
called Ella Riot, playing 150 to 200 dates a year, mostly in holes in
the wall. Normally, she's surrounded by guys she loves. Tonight, she's
all on her own with "I Kissed a Girl". Introverted, eh? Adam doesn't buy
it, but he does buy THIS. So does Shakira. Usher's all like, "what the
hell, let's do it." Shakira's a rock chick herself. So is Adam. Usher?
He can wing it. Michelle... is asking all the questions. Adam wants to
facilitate what already exists. Usher wants to know where Michelle's
heart lies (electro-synth pop, by the way). Shakira wants to give 150
percent. Michelle picks... for some reason, she's all like "What the
hell, USHER, let's do it."
Julie Roberts (33, Nashville) was a
receptionist-turned-singer for the label she worked. She went gold. She
performed on Leno. But then came the sophomore slump, and her label
dropped her... in the same week that she and her family lost everything
in a flood AND was diagnosed with MS. She hopes to court the man in
chair #4 with "God Gave Me You". .... Nothing, Blake? I know she was all
warbly, but I thought certainly you'd give her a shot. The kicker...
Blake knows her.
Monique Abbadie (20, Miami) is no
stranger to the small screen... She was on "Sabado Gigante" as a child.
Now she's hoping to replicate her childhood so she can leave exporting
with her dad behind. Now here's a bit of interesting info. She and
Shakira actually met once. She was in the audience of her "Tour of the
Mongoose" concert. And tonight, she'll be singing one of her hits, "Loca".
And here's the money shot. Blake wants a piece. And Shakira... can't
believe that Usher hit his button at the same time SHE did. Adam makes
it four, so let's see how loca she gets when the choice is thrust upon
her. The answer... VERY. She picks Shakira in a move that comes as a
shock to NO ONE!
Last up, Warren Stone (31, Hannah, SC), a
full-time firefighter and family man. It's a big adrenaline rush, also
as much as being a single father of two (his wife and him couldn't make
it work). He's going to give the stage one more go for the family way
with "Colder Weather" by Zac Brown Band. Adam wastes no time. Shakira
takes her time before hitting. Usher's still thinking... You keep
thinking, Blake's going to hit his button. And Adam makes the lethal
mistake of saying "Blake's the country guy". So either he's dumb or he's
trying to stack Blake's deck, so he can miss out on a future pick. In
any every, he picks.. ADAM! How about that! Two surprises in one night!
After night three...

Blake is the only coach who is currently
under halfway staffed. Can he exact revenge on Adam for his last-minute
snipe? It's all going down as the search for the next Voice continues.
