Round of 14: Get
into the Kitchen!
August 18
Last time, the final 30 were put through the
wringer one more time for a shot to compete for the title of MasterChef. After
hours upon hours of cooking, chopping, and... chopping, only 14 remained. By the
end of tonight, though, one dream will be dashed as the contestants - and the
contest - move into the MasterChef kitchen.
As you can see, the MasterChef kitchen is an
epicurean's dream come true. State of the art cookware. State of the art
machinery. Fully stocked. But these will not determine who becomes MasterChef.
How you use them will.
MYSTERY BOX
First challenge is straight outta "Chopped".
Using nothing more than the ingredients in your Mystery Box, you will create one
stunning dish in 45 minutes. The one dish that wins will pick the main
ingredient in the main test. In the box, a pork chop, parsley, cabbage, ciabatta
bread, Granny Smith apples, lemon, and tomato... and a bottle of cognac... and
cinnamon and chocolate. Fourteen ingredients. Use as many or as little as you
wish.
Oh, and the judges will only taste the three most
enticing dishes, so plating and presentation is KEY.
The top three...
- Sheena - Cognac Flavored Chocolate Mousse with
Candied Lemon Peel. The texture is smooth, and the dish is daring. Joe would be
happy to charge $10 for it.
- Jake - Rustic Country Pork Chop with Cabbage & Apple Compote. The cabbage
melts in your mouth. Gordon thinks that it's seasoned beautifully.
- Whitney - Southern Fried Pork Chop with Coleslaw. Whitney has NEVER cooked
pork before. Graham says she nailed it.
And the winner of the first Mystery Box is....
WHITNEY! Not only will she pick the main ingredient in the next test, but she'll
get five minutes in the pantry by herself. The remaining contestants will get
half that time to prepare for...
INVENTION TEST
The one thing that Whitney will NOT control is
the theme. The theme is... Chinese. She will get to choose the main ingredients
out of... mushrooms, Mandarin oranges, or duck. Whitney chooses... MANDARIN
ORANGES.
Now that they have their elements, they have one
hour to prepare the best Chinese dish that they can incorporating the theme
ingredient. Be creative and be smart, because an elimination is at stake here.
The attitude in the MasterKitchen is one of
survival, as many of the cooks are playing out of their element. Whitney is
going for a stir-fry... as is Avis.... And Jenna's already plated with 20
minutes to go.
And... TIME.
Whitney - Mandarin Orange Chicken with Stir-Fry
Vegetables
Slim - Chinese Spiced Chicken with Mandarin Orange Sauce. With no broth. That
really would've worked.
Avis - Chinese Orange Chicken
Tony - Wok-Fried Chicken with Broccoli
David - Spicy Orange Chicken with Steamed Vegetables and Rice
Sheetal - Pan-Fried Chicken with Bok Choy
Jenna - Asian Orange Stir Fry
And Joe's about had it. "This is the problem with
this whole round. It's boring! It's not the spirit of what we came here to do.
And if you want to play the game and be safe... you're not going to win this
game. We're trying to find the best amateur chef in America. The challenges are
not going to get easier. So get ready to bring it 100%. And if you're not, you
should probably leave your apron and check yourself out right now, because this
is getting frustrating."
Tracy - Ginger Mandarin Chicken with
Vegetables... and we finally have a winner.
Sharone - Crispy Sesame Chicken... and another.
Sheena - Warm Mandarin Salad
Faruq - Stuffed Chicken with Vegetables in Hoisin Sauce
Mike - Nutty Orange Chicken with Peppers. Gordon has one big problem... he
doesn't want to stop eating it.
The winner of this test... MIKE. The bottom
three... Faruq (who was pretty much sentenced by Gordon at the tasting), Sheena,
and Avis. The first person to turn in their apron is... AVIS.
... but we're not done yet. Someone else is about
to hit the showers. That person.... is... SHEENA. And no one is more shocked
than Faruq.
Twelve cooks left, but anything can happen inside
the MasterChef kitchen... or OUTSIDE of it, as you'll see in a moment. This is
MasterChef on Fox. See you in 60.
