The Final 14
August 10

Last week, Gordon, Graham, and Joe pared the field of 100 to the final 30, but the biggest test is yet to come, as by the end of the hour, less than half will remain to compete for $250,000, their own cookbook, and the title of America's first MasterChef. They've all earned the right to wear the stripes... but now can they prove that they've earned the right to keep'em?

First up, a delivery to a nondescript hangar somewhere in Los Angeles... Onions, and lots of them. The masterclass begins with cutting onions, because if you can't cut an onion, you have no place in the kitchen. The trick, for those playing at home, is to let the knife do the work, let it get as high as it can, then fold over, and whatever you do, make a clean, even cut, because if you cut it evenly, it cooks evenly.

All of the cooks will cut onions until the judges tell them to stop. At that time, they'll know whether they're still in it... or they're out.

And thirty seconds in, and we have our first cut... or four. Then we have our first cut when half-onions show up in the cut... and another. Sheetal... is the first through to the next round. Darryl... joins Sheetal. Remember, he has three fingers on each hand. Several more yeses make the cut... literally... while Joe... will not join them. Tamar... is IN! Scott... is out. And not too soon because he's still bleeding.

Ninety minutes later... they're still chopping, and so are the judges.

We're down to two players: Faruq and Hollie. The bartender or the homemaker....  STOP! Joining the winners' circle... FARUQ!

Now that you have the stench of victory on you, it's time for your next challenge.... I'll let Gordon give this one. "There are 20,000 eggs. But your future will be determined on how well you cook just one stunning, single egg." That's right. AN egg. Singular. The remaining players have 30 minutes and an elaborate spread to turn a single egg into a stunning dish. They can chop under pressure, but can they cook under pressure?

Remember, the egg is the star of the dish. Theme ingredient.

Tamar wants to make a Jamaican flatbread open-faced sandwich, while Whitney is making a BLT. Slim is making... well, it translates to rice noodles with egg on a roll. Sheetal doesn't eat eggs. Adeliz is making a chipotle deviled egg. Elsewhere... sparks begin to fly. Literally.

No one is really thinking outside of the box with the egg. No poaching in red wine, no amazing ingredients. Just a lot of safe dishes.

And... TIME. One bad egg could mean the end. Remember, the egg must be the hero.

First: Whitney Webster's poached egg with salad, Max's Tortilla Espanola, and Slim's Pho Ap Chao Hot Ga Cuon (the fried egg noodle dealie). Max... OUT. Also out... Whitney. Slim is in.

Next, Charmaine's Scrambled Egg with Creme Fraiche, Tracy's Banana Pudding Napoleon, and Jake's Bacon & Poached Egg. Charmaine... OUT. Tracy... IN. Jake... joins Tracy.

Next, Darryl's baked egg, Adeliz's huevo diablo, and a huevo ranchero. ALL of them are out.

Sheetal has a baked egg with mushroom, Lee has a Poached Egg over Spinach, and Tony has Egg Purgatory.  ALL of them are... IN!

Robin's Fluffy Egg with Goat Cheese, Tamar's Fried Bara and Egg Sandwich, and Faruq's avocado/jalapeno stuffed egg are next... Robin's OUT. Tamar's OUT. Faruq's.... IN.

Sixth row: Sharrone's scramble with salmon, Mike's soft boiled salad, and Jenna's egg with steak. ALL winners!

Seventh row: David's poached egg & steak over potatoes with mushrooms, Sheena's egg en cocotte, and Roberto's frittata di fettuccine. With a wet egg. Roberto's out. Sheena... is IN! David... after lumpy potatoes... and a close encounter with Gordon... is IN!

Final row has Asmina's scrambled egg chilaquiles, Avis' old-school deviled egg, and Whitney Miller's open-faced BLT. Not all of them will be staying. Asmina... was no hero today. Whitney was all hero. Finally, Avis... joins the winners!

So your final 14 on MasterChef are...

- Sheetal Bhagat (37, Chicago)
- Tony Carbone (31, Boston)
- Jake Gandolfo (38, Santa Cruz, CA)
- Sharone Hakman (28, Los Angeles)
- Jenna Hamiter (23, Euless, TX)
- Slim Huynh (22, Harvey, LA)
- Faruq Jenkins (30, Glendale, CA)
- Mike Kim (34, Redondo Beach, CA)

- Whitney Miller (22, Poplarville, MS)
- Tracy Nailor (42, Atlanta)
