Semifinals: Westphal/Glaser/Galiher
November 14
A check for a
quarter-million dollars... A trophy... Bragging rights... The right to
be called the best of the best. These things and more come with the
title of Jeopardy! Grand Champion, and for the next two weeks, fifteen
of the best Jeopardy! players this year will return for one more go at
it.
We started with 15... Now
there are only nine. From there, we go to three... and finally... one.
The five preliminary matches determined our nine semifinalists, the five
game winners and the four wild cards. Today through Wednesday, they
compete for one of three spots in the Thursday/Friday finals. No second
chances on this second week of competition; it's win or go home.
Another standard two-week affair awaits with an minimum guarantee of
$100,000 for second place and $50,000 for third.
Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000, while quarterfinalists
are guaranteed $5000 for participation, as well as a copy of the
Jeopardy! DVD home game. As always, any and all winning
accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.
Who will join Doug Hicton and Celeste DiNucci in the final? It's the
final semi...

MANILOW! |
Daily Double: $800 Manilow! Craig &
Paul are tied for the lead with $600. Cliff is -$600 down. Craig bets $1000 on
this: despite the title of this 1976 No. 1 hit of Barry's, the words & music are
by Bruce Johnston. "What is 'I Write the Songs"?" That... would've gotten him
the money. Instead, Craig blanks, leaving him with -$400.

Paul's first words: "Alex... Take me to Nerdvana."
Daily Double #1: $1600 Astro Quiz. Paul gives it a
run with $7200 to Craig's $6000, but this clue
belongs to Cliff and his $3400. "I'll trade you."
Seriously, though. He wagers $2000 on this: last
names of the 2 men who in 1995 discovered a moving
object neara globular cluster in Sagittarius. "Who
are Hale and Bopp?" Correct for $5400!
Daily Double #2: $800 Sculpture.
Cliff has $8600 to Paul's $9600 and Craig's $6000. He bets $2400 on this: Jean
Arp went from Flat reliefs to the freestanding pieces called sculpture "in"
this, like a type of theater. "What is amphitheatre?" Nope, it was in the round,
dropping to $6200.

Correct response: who was Nellie Bly?
Craig's response: who is Nellie Bly? RIGHT. Wager: $4000. Total: $8000
Cliff's response: who is Nelly Blye? RIGHT. Wager: $4601. Total: $11,601
Paul's response: who is Dorothea Dix? WRONG. Wager doesn't matter...
FINALIST:
Cliff Galiher
Cliff knew exactly what to
do and he did it. But still, what a difference a half makes. Craig was
riding high in the Jeopardy! round before stress (and a USC Trojan with
a Daily Double win) got to him.
Next time, it's the
