A check for a quarter-million dollars... A trophy... Bragging rights... The right to be called the best of the best. These things and more come with the title of Jeopardy! Grand Champion, and for the next two weeks, fifteen of the best Jeopardy! players this year will return for one more go at it.

We start with 15... from there we go to nine... then three... and finally... one. We start with five preliminary matches to determine the nine semifinalists. Those nine will compete for a spot in the two-day final to determine who will walk away with the grand prize.

Another standard two-week affair awaits with an minimum guarantee of $100,000 for second place and $50,000 for third.

Semifinalists are guaranteed at least $10,000, while quarterfinalists are guaranteed $5000 for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder a player goes.

But first, game one...

Mehrun Etebari
Durham, NH
graduate student of international relations
Five days, $130,100
Cathy Lanctot
Wilmington, DE
law professor
Five days, $117,102
Chris Mazurek
Columbia, MO
assistant professor
Four days, $78,597

... and away we go. Jeopardy! round...

EUROPE CINEMA CAFE SHAKESPEAREAN IMs LET'S SPEAK ESKIMO FISSION CHIPS

Daily Double: $1000 Shakespearean IMs. Chris has the lead with $1800 against Cathy & Mehrun's $1000 a piece. He bets $1000 on this: Come C me in "Pyramus and Thisbe"! OBTW, tired of "Head of an ass" jokes, TYVM. "Who is Bottom?" Correct for $2800!

At the end of the Jeopardy! round...

$4,600 $2,800 $7,000
Mehrun Cathy Chris

Double Jeopardy! categories:

ANATOMY MUST FLEE TV CRIME TIME The New York Times
Op-Ed
FORMER PLACE NAMES "THINK" ABOUT IT

Daily Double #1: $1600 Anatomy. Chris leads with $17,800 against Mehrun's $11,000 and Cathy's $5200. Chris bets $800 on this: this heart valve gets its name from its resemblance to a bishop's hat. "What is a miter?" Nope, it was the mitral valve, leaving him with $17,000.

Daily Double #2: $2000 Crime Time. Cathy finds it with $6400 against Mehrun's $11,000 and Chris' $17,800. She bets $4000 on this: in a letter to her sons before her 1953 execution, she wrote, "Always remember that we were innocent." "Who was Ethel Rosenberg?" Correct for $10,400.

At the end of the Double Jeopardy! Round...

$9,400 $10,400 $19,400
Mehrun Cathy Chris

Final Jeopardy! category: THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

REFERRING TO THE GREAT BEAR CONSTELLATION, THIS AREA'S NAME IS FROM THE GREEK MEANING "OPPOSITE THE BEAR"

Correct response: what is Antarctica (anti + arktos = opposite the bear)?

Mehrun's response: what is Australia? WRONG. Wager: $8700. Total: $700
Cathy's response: what is Ursa minor? WRONG. Wager: $6000. Total: $4400.
Chris's response: what is ? WRONG. Wager: $1401. Total: $38,601.

Today's match was very hotly contested. Too bad the final was a bit subpar. Even so, Mehrun pretty much bet his way out of the tournament, while Cathy MAY have a fringe spot. It all depends on who wins what in the coming matches.

Meanwhile, Chris, who played a heck of a game, needs to focus on his endgame, otherwise, he'll be in the spot that Mehrun was in today.

Second quarterfinal tomorrow.
