Finals: NWU/UMich/Stanford: Part 2 - May 11
Rivalries have been fought everywhere from the
hardwood to the gridiron, but here at the University of Southern California,
players from 15 prestigious colleges will take each other on in a rivalry of the
academic kind.
But more than pride is on the line, as the winner
of this two-week tournament will get a berth in the next Tournament of Champions
as well as a check with a one followed by five zeroes. The first runner-up will
pocket at least $50,000, while the second runner-up will take home a minimum of
$25,000. Semifinalists are guaranteed $10,000, whilst there's a minimum of $5000
for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder
a player goes. After two weeks, we've
reached the heady climax. One of these three people will be $100,000 richer in
30 minutes' time.

Cliff starts to peck around the final category
until...
Daily Double: $1000 Word Origins. Cliff leads
with $5600 to Craig's $3400 and Christine's $2400. He wants to bet the level on
this: appropriately, this adjective that means the giving of one's name to
something comes from the Greek for "giving name" "What is eponymous?" Right
for $6600!

Daily Double #1: $800 Libraries. Cliff still
leads it with $12,400 against Craig's $8200 and Christine's $2400. He wagers $4000 on this:
Irving Berlin's & Walt Whitman's personal papers are held in this library
founded in 1800. "What is the New York City library?" Nope, it's the
Library of Congress, leaving him with $8400.
More hunting and pecking ensues.
Daily Double #2: $2000 Facts & Figures. Trailing
by $6200, Craig needs to gain ground here if he wants to stand a change. He has
$11,000 to Cliff's $17,200 and Christine's $4800. Craig bets $2000 on this:
yikes! This visible surface of the sun below the chromosphere is about 10,000
degrees F. "What is the corona?" Nope, it's the photosphere, leaving
him with $9000.

Resident Advisor Chico says: Let's get this out
of the way first and foremost. Bad news... not only is there no way on earth
that Christine can win this tournament, there's not even the faintest
possibility of her coming in second! It is literally a two-man horse race.
The good news... $25,000 for one weekend's worth
isn't that bad.
The only way that Craig can win the tournament is
if he wagers everything and answers correctly in hopes that Cliff wagers more
than $2100 and doesn't.
