Preliminaries: GA Tech/NWU/UCSD- April 30
Rivalries have been fought everywhere from the
hardwood to the gridiron, but here at the University of Southern California,
players from 15 prestigious colleges will take each other on in a rivalry of the
academic kind.
But more than pride is on the line, as the winner
of this two-week tournament will get a berth in the next Tournament of Champions
as well as a check with a one followed by five zeroes. The first runner-up will
pocket at least $50,000, while the second runner-up will take home a minimum of
$25,000. Semifinalists are guaranteed $10,000, whilst there's a minimum of $5000
for participation. As always, any and all winning accrued depends on how far up the ladder
a player goes. (C-Note: for a while, we've
been saying this was the second college championship this season... it's
actually the first. Our apologies.) In this
first week, the five game-winners will meet up with four wild-card players among
non-winning high scorers.
Today, the Yellow Jackets, the Wildcats, and the
Tritons send these three...

Daily Double: $400 How About Med School?. Alice
with $2000 trails Dean's $4200. She makes it a true Daily Double on this: in
1984 the FDA approved this drug for over-the-counter sales; popular brands
include Advil & Motrin. "What is ibuprofen?" Correct for $4000!

Daily Double #1: $2000 Historical Fiction. After
the three hunt and peck for the DD, it would seem like only an inevitability
that someone finds it early. Alice, with $8600, opts to tie Dean's $11,600 with
a bet of $3000. She'll still lead over Haritha's $3600 if she gets this wrong,
though: her 1956 novel "Imperial Woman" is about China's dowager empress
Tz'u-Hsi. "Who is Buck?" Pearl Buck is right for the tie and $11,600.
More hunting and pecking ensues until Haritha
finds ...
Daily Double #2: $2000 21st Century Quotations.
Haritha can make a move here with $6000 against Dean's $12,800 and Alice's
$13,200. She bets $4000. The clue: in June 2006 this mayor said, "This is the
Big Easy, and sometimes we lay back a little too much. Get off your duffs." "Who
is Ray Nagin?" Correct for $10,000!

Correct response: what is Baja California Norte
(or simply Baja California)?
Haritha's response: what is Baja California? RIGHT. Wager: $1200. Total: $14,000.
Dean's response: what is Baja California? RIGHT. Wager: $7800. Total: $25,000.
Alice's response: what is Baja? WRONG. Wager:
$2800. Total: $16,400.
SEMIFINALIST:
DEAN MALEC
Resident Advisor Chico says: From this group of
three we saw two very excellent players. One of them, Dean, will return to the
fire next week. The other, Alice, may return. I doubt she's going to let a
little thing like the omitting of a word keep her from staying competitive,
especially since she made the wise decision to just bet enough to keep her in
the fray (although the book says to bet a buck ahead of double Dean's score).
Wise man once said, sometimes the best move is not to play. As for Haritha...
well, don't be surprised if she makes it through to next week, although playing
like a lamb will only get her that far.
More from USC tomorrow.
