Five Chefs Compete
July 20
Action continues in the house of horrors that Fox
built, as the brigade returns for a new challenge...
... and we're going grocery shopping for it. Each
chef will be given ten dollars to shop for ingredients to cook an impressive
dish. They will then be judged on how much three gourmands would pay for it.
Highest total wins.
Thirty minutes later, we have these...
JAY: Pita-encrusted Lamb with Greek Salad
JASON: Pan-seared Tilapia with Lemon Shrimp & Roasted Eggplant Ravioli
BEN: Seared Lamb Chip with Potatoes, Sauteed Spinach & Artichokes
AUTUMN: New England Broil Veal with Potatoes & Corn
HOLLI: Five-Spice Ahi Tuna with Parsnip Puree
The top two in this challenge, as decided by
Patina Group owner, Joaquim Splichal, Savour Magazine deputy editor Dana Bowen,
and the general manager of Gordon Ramsay At The London, Vern Lakusta.... Jay and
Holli. Jay's dish would cost... $28.66. Holli's.. $29.66! Reward for her...
a night at the Peninsula in Beverly Hills and $1000 to spend at a kitchen store.
Not only that, she gets to share it with somebody... she chooses ... Jay.
Punishment for the other three chefs... Quoting
Jason Mraz... It's LAUNDRY DAY!
That night back in the dorms, Holli and Jay spend
a tender moment in the hot tub... which is quickly ruined by Autumn's presence.
And the story of Holli's tramp stamp and the fact that she has a child that
lives with his father.
The next day, it's time to prep for dinner, but
before we open the doors, Chef Ramsay has an announcement to make... tonight,
the chefs will be switching stations, handing off communication while doing so.
(C-Note: the folks at my work could stand to
learn a thing or three from this show.) OPEN HELL'S KITCHEN!
DINNER SERVICE
As a reminder, Holli's ahi dish will be
on the menu tonight.
Jason starts things off at fish... and he
undercooks scallops. SWITCH! Jason tries his hand at meat... and the
Beef Wellington is taken out of the oven too early, thinking that Holli
didn't really finish the beef beforehand. She did. He didn't tell Ramsay
about the delay...
Meanwhile, Ben continues the fish
station's downward spiral with overcooked tuna. SWITCH! Jay's fish is
refired, adding more insult to injury. Autumn, meanwhile, is climbing
back up from the hole she dug herself in last episode. Doesn't help
matters that when it comes time to SWITCH!, Jay doesn't make any effort
to communicate to her.
Over at fish, Holli is usurped by Ben,
while Ramsay tells him to stay at his station. Jason's fish is returned
to the kitchen.
Ramsay steps out (which is completely
innocuous when compared to the SFNE from last episode) and puts Scott
(the guy who's been on all sorts of TV) in charge. Ben, thinking that
he's still in charge, decides to take the pass... something Scott has
done already, thank you very much. Needless to say... he's not
appreciative of the help.
"DON'T EVER COME UP TO MY PASS
AGAIN AND TRY TO TAKE OVER MY (^_^)ING PLACE!!! YOU GOT IT?!"
.... okay, maybe we were a little
generous.
Ramsay returns and dinner is wrapped
easy... BUT Ramsay's not impressed with the problems created by Jason
(the fish), Jay (the fish), and Benjamin (taking over Scott's (^_^)ing
place. The chefs go back to being just plain line cooks... and go back
to decide which two amongst them is going up to the pass.
The group consensus: Autumn is
emerging... Ben is crashing. And Jay .. he volunteers himself.
ELIMINATION
Holli nominates Ben (completely shut down
and won't communicate)... and Jason (doesn't have the skills). Jason
says his nomination was personal. Ben says he overthinks cooking but
thinks that he's had a good service.
Ramsay sends... JASON packing, but with a
word of advice to keep at it. "You haven't finished in this industry
yet."
"Jason was good enough to make it to the
final five, but he just didn't instill the confidence I needed to see to
be my head chef."
Tomorrow, the chefs are going to be
tested in a completely different way, and the honeymoon may be over for
Holli and Jay.
