Episode 5: The Finale!! - March 27
This is it. The final tip-off. When
this hour is over and done, either Matt Bullard or Dee Brown will
have the honor... nay, the PRIVILEGE of being Stephen A. Smith's
tackling dummy for a year. That's because he will have won the
third Dream Job and a one-year NBA analyst job at ESPN. Along with
Smith, Kit Hoover, Woody Paige and Veep Al Jaffe will decide their
fate... as well as America.
We start once more with The Fifth Quarter.
Once again, this episode immediately follows a live game on ESPN:
this time the Philly 76ers destroying the once-formidable LA
Lakers. Host Stuart Scott will ask each player a question about
said game and he can answer first. After that, though, the other
can jump-in.
Matt Bullard, why were the Sixers able to pull ahead in the fourth
quarter? He says Philly's Allen Iverson was having a terrible
shooting night but turned on the juice late. Dee jumps in saying
he got hot when the Lakers' Kobi Bryant got a technical foul.
"Wee" Dee Brown, does Kobe or A.I. make his teammates better? He
says Iverson, of course, given the records and how he's doing
personally. Matt adds that Chris Webber helped considerably.
Matt, which Lakers aren't playing to their potential? That's easy
for Matt: everyone but Kobe and Chris Minn. Dee disagrees, saying
that EVERYONE stinks on the team. Dee, has LA owner Jerry Buss not
received enough blame for the Lakers' demise? No, says Dee, saying
the coaches and the staff don't like it. Matt agrees, since HE
made the decision for trading Shaq to Miami.
Here come da judges to find out who's better. Woody (who brought
his "Peeps" [marshmallow chicks], giving that it's Easter Sunday)
says they got along well together... but Dee took a SLIGHT edge.
Kit agrees that they worked great, but Dee was a bit better.
Stephen A.... he DOESN'T think both deserved their own show as
Woody thought... but Dee DID take a stand on Kobe whereas Matt
just "jumped on the band wagon". And Big All thought Dee was
strongest due to stats, though Matt wasn't too bad.
OK, to the main task. And, this week, it's One-On-One.
Each contestant will work with ESPN and ABC's NBA anchor John
Saunders. They were both asked to book a guest for tonight and
will conduct an interview with said guest. The judges will look
for quality, content and delivery of their questions.
Matt, the only one in the whole competition who has an NBA Title
ring, starts off. He'll be representing Wendy's "Wild Card Winner"
David Chau of Rochester, NY. Should he win the competition, David
gets that "Ultimate SportsCenter Experience" that only one person
has won all month! Matt Bullard, your One-On-One begins in 3...
2... 1!
Saunders announces that they'll be talking with new Dallas
Mavericks' head coach Avery Johnson... and he asks Matt how
changing coaches will affect the team. Matt relies on experience
to explain how things get topsy-turvy... and yet, as his ring
testifies, things work out all right. Then comes the talk with
Johnson. Matt asks him about how it feels to take over for a
legendary coach like Don Nelson, working for the flamboyant owner
Mark Cuban (it's a great relationship), what he's doing to get the
Mavs prepared and how the dynamics have changed in a year from
being a player to a head coach. The answers were long, but the
questions weren't really followed up. Saunders then talks to Matt
about Dallas challenging the San Antonio Spurs sans Tim Duncan.
Matt thinks they will and gives good stats.
Let's see what the live voters have to say. Kit says he had great
repartee with Saunders and was generally good, but were just
reading questions and not giving follow-ups. Stephen A. gets hard
and says it was a good opening... but would've asked other
questions and was a "little bit corny". Big Al liked the choice of
Johnson and the questions were good, though he would've followed
up. Woody thought it was an exceptional interview.
The One-On-One continues with Dee and Saunders and Grant Hill
ready to talk. Dee Brown, your One-On-One begins in 3... 2... 1!
Saunders asks Dee what's wrong with the Orlando Magic and Dee says
there are too many things going on with them that make things
chaotic (playoff run, new coach, injuries, etc.) Dee then talks to
former Chicago Bulls' and current Magic forward Grant Hill. He
asks about how Hill came back so quickly from a mess of surgeries
and near-death by staph, what they'll have to do to get the team
back on-track and his relationship with teammate Steve Francis.
The questions were long but granted long answers. Saunders then
asked Dee about whether he thought Hill should've hung up the
sneakers... and Dee knows - as he played against him - how much
heart Hill has.
Stephen A. is disappointed, thinking he was soft with Hill. Dee
also didn't ask the right questions. Big Al says that Dee should
not say, "Let me ask a question..." and just ask the question...
and BETTER questions. Woody says he should ask questions that HE
would ask at home watching the interview. Kit says his questions
should be short and concise... but says he had good personality.
OK, time for some trivia knowledge with Rapid Fire!
Stuart will fire NBA trivia questions at each player and will
expect a quick answer. Each right answer is one point... and they
WILL keep score!
Back and forth they go. They stay neck-and-neck in the early
going, but Matt pulls ahead a few questions in. Dee evens it up...
and then goes into the lead as Matt stumbles late. In the end of
the regulation round, it's Dee with 9 and Matt with 6. But then
Stuart tosses bonus questions out. Dee's is "In the '94-'95
season, Matt played basketball for what country?" Dee gets it
right with "Greece". Matt's question: "Who did Dee Brown beat in
the finals of the '91 Slam Dunk Contest?" Matt guesses "Dominique
Wilkins"... but it was Shawn Kemp. Final score: Dee - 10, Matt -
6!
One more challenge to go: The Fastbreak! Each
contestant hosts a segment with John Saunders where they look-in
on a game played earlier in the season... but they must ACT like
they're actually looking at it happening just moments ago. The
contestants must also provide analysis on the game even though
they have not seen the video. They will be judged on
improvisation, analysis and teamwork.
Dee starts off with the New York Knicks being hosted by the
Sacramento Kings and leading by four with under a minute to go.
Dee gives great analysis as Sacramento ties it up, though he
stumbles a bit in the speaking (though that's to be expected). He
and Saunders talk very well about the Knicks falling apart near
the end, creating fouls and allowing the Kings to beat them
115-114. After some closing analysis about the Knicks' Stephan
Marbury, they sign off.
Big Al says Dee is STILL talking too fast but had good points and
kept up with thing. Woody wants him to bring the high energy and
better info at the start. Kit reiterates about the speed but likes
the info given. And Stephen A. says he had great points and needed
to be more assertive about his final point.
Matt gets San Antonio Spurs vs. Houston Rockets, Spurs up by seven
with less than 30 seconds left. Matt starts talking about Tim
Duncan's injury... then turns into a play-by-play guy when a
Rocket sinks a long three-pointer and a foul. Matt keeps up with
the action... but not a lot of info changes hands as Houston wins
81-80. Near the end, he resorted to just saying "Wow" a lot.
Saunders then asks Matt if the Rockets will get it together for
the Playoffs. Matt talks about streaks and how Tracy McGrady
carried them in this game.
The news... is not so good for him. Woody likes that Matt
mentioned Duncan wasn't a good foul-shot shooter... but he didn't
finish strong at all. Kit says Matt was lost between play-by-play
and analysis. Stephen A. doesn't think Matt told them ANYTHING!
And Big Al liked the energy and enthusiasm... but Matt didn't
mention that McGrady scored TEN POINTS in those 30 seconds!
OK, it's time for The Final Cut. Time for
ESPN.com loggers to vote on the worse. The majority gets one vote,
as do each of the judges. Three votes and you got THAT CLOSE...
but no closer... and your opponent wins the one-year contract.
America cuts... Matt Bullard. That's more.
Stephen A. Smith says Matt was better in the interview... but Dee
won the Fastbreak. He chooses by overall performance and the Rapid
Fire... and the fact that Rapid Fire sucked hard for one of them
made his decision for him. He cuts... Matt Bullard. One more cut
and Dee Brown wins..
Al Jaffe says it was a strong night for Matt... but was
disappointed at his overall performance tonight. Dee rocked at
Fifth Quarter, Rapid Fire AND Fastbreak... and all Matt had was
One-On-One. Therefore, Al puts the nail in this season's coffin
and cuts... Matt Bullard.
So Stuart Scott and Stephen A. get to say, "WADDUP, COLLEAGUE?!"
to DEE BROWN, DREAM JOB 3 WINNER!!
Dee was happy to have improved over the last four weeks. He does a
cartwheel (and nearly nails Stuart in the process)! While Dee
works out his contract - as well as how to stay on Stephen A.'s
GOOD side (if there IS such a thing) - we say good-bye to this
season... and "hugs and hand-pounds" to all! |
