Cash
Cab by Chico Alexander, GSNN
Air time: 6p ET/5p CT on Discovery
Host: Ben Bailey |

Bonnie is hailing
for a cab. She's getting more than she bargained for as
she is quizzed to Seventh between C & D. It's 83.5
blocks, so there's plenty of room for either a big
payday or a big suck out. First strike: who co-founded
the National Women's Suffrage Association. "Roosevelt?"
Susan B. Anthony. She still have 50 blocks and $75.
Second strike: what instrument are you likely playing if
you're stepping on a wa-wa pedal? "A piano?" A guitar.
But she gets a Red Light Challenge to make up for it.
The question: Christianity is the world's most popular
faith. Name four of the next five. Islam, Hinduism,
Judaism... Missed Buddhism and Sikhism. Time for the
Benjamin questions. Time for a mobile shout out: What
Steinbeck story does a gemstone bring a poor man
problems instead of wealth? Calling up brother Noel....
He only knows "Of Mice and Men". "The Grapes of Wrath."
Wrong. It was "The Pearl". That's three strikes, and
Bonnie's gonna have to walk the rest of the way.
A family of four
from Utah is headed to the Empire State Building. They
sweep the $25 tier. They use the Street Shoutout for
$50: What was the name of the building that Lee Harvey
Oswald was in when he shot JFK? "Book Depository." Good
enough! Time for a Red Light Challenge: name five of the
top seven longest-running Broadway musicals in history.
They get "A Chorus Line", "Cats," "Fiddler on the Roof",
"Phantom of the Opera" and.. miss "Miss Saigon" and
"Beauty & The Beast." That leads into the first strike:
Skull & Bones was a famous secret society from what Ivy
League university? "Harvard." No, it's Yale. What does a
professional pugilist do for a living? Time for a mobile
shout out. The phone-a-friend... isn't there. So they go
with "study inlet waterways." Not a bad guess... just
not right. A pugilist boxes. Final question... gotten!
That's $350 if they want to walk... or they can go
double-or-nothing on the Video Bonus.. They take the
money. I don't blame them. I thought everyone knew what
a pugilist was.
Finally, a
couple of couples go to the Marriott Marquis. They sweep
the $25 tier, getting $250 going into a Red Light
Challenge: five states that make up the US's Gulf Coast.
Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida, all
in three seconds! That ups them to $500. They get $750
as they reach the hotel, but do they want to cash out or
play the Bonus? They go for it, deciding that they had
nothing better to do anyway. Good call. The question: on
what island chain did Charles Darwin hone his theory of
evolution by observing tortoises in 1835? "The Galapagos
Islands!" That is right for $1500! They ... definitely
live together.
Second trip in
the Cash Cab begins with the lizard king, Jim Morrison,
going to 13th & A. Nah, not really. Jim sweeps the $25
questions, but he strikes when he names Sri Lanka as the
country of origin of Darjeeling tea (it was his second
thought, India). Jim has $350 going into the Red Light
Challenge: the five vessels in the game of Battleship.
He gets battleship, aircraft carrier, submarine,
destroyer, and... cruiser is five for $600! He needs a
phone for the famous photographer who snapped a naked
John Lennon hugging Yoko Ono. "Richard Avedon?" Not
right. It was Annie Leibowitz. Last question... gotten
for $800. Will he risk it? Yes! The Video Bonus: We owe
the invention of fireworks to the invention of what
substance used as a propellant in firearms?
"Gunpowder."... Correct for $1600!
Karen is heading
to St. Mark's between Third & Second. Twelve measly
blocks. First strike: what breed of animal in "Bambi"
ironically utters "He can call me flower if he wants
to"? Karen goes with deer. Flower is a skunk. It's
ironic because he stinks. Second strike: in what card
game do you need the Queen of Spades to shoot the moon?
"Canasta?" Fun to say but not right. It's hearts. Mobile
comes into play on this: 8 Mile Road divides what city
from its affluent suburb. Quoth Dimitrius: "Detroit."
Yes! Going to the street to figure out the author of
"The Godfather". No idea... Game over. It was Mario Puzo.
No money and Karen loses her free ride.
One more ride
with three of the most beautiful nerds I'd ever seen,
Tracy, Megan, and Jen, going to 11th and Bleecker...
They sweep the $25 tier and the $50 tier. Gordon would
know this: three consecutive strikes for $100... "Lucky
strike." A restaurant in Soho, but we're not going there
today. Correct answer: turkey. They use the street
shoutout for this $100 question: When Dorothy first
meets the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz, he's so rusty he
can only say what two words? They get "oil...
something." But they go with "help me." Not right.
Correct: "Oil can." Good news: they make it to the
Magnolia Bakery. But will they take the money or risk
it? "We'd like to take the cash, please." Good call!
Enjoy the cupcakes! |

Stewart
(Janet, Tolenia, Raymael, Sharon, Robert) from
Houston |
|
McMackin
(Casey, Reed, Nicole, Rex, Royal) |
Yesterday, we
retired a champion family into the annals of Family Feud
lore. And what do we have today? A family that thinks
they're trying out for "American Idol". That's two doors
down. Round 1: one thing you see on every movie about
King Kong (5). Casey saw the trailers; she knows you see
the monkey for #1. We also see the Empire State
Building, the girl, destruction... and that's it. Jack
Black didn't make the survey. The Stewarts try to steal
with scared people... Not there! The McMackins have 85.
Other answer: jungle/tribe.
Round 2: a prop
a stripper uses (7). Don't ask Tolenia how she knows
this, but a pole's number one to Reed's feather boa.
They also use a whip and clothes (you have to have
something to strip, I would imagine). The McMackins try
to steal with whip cream. Not there! The Stewarts get
87. Other answers: fan, high heels, tassels. It's a
two-point Feud going into...
Double Round:
something you eat that has the word "French" in front of
it
(5). Raymael gets French fries for #1. French toast and
French bread make the board, but how about the French
dressing? McMakins get 217. Other answer: French vanilla
ice cream.
Triple Round:
an animal with big ears (4). Rex's elephant beats
Sharon's rabbit, 1 to 2. A dog and a donkey round it out
for the McMakins, 493-87.
Siblings Casey &
Reed go for the Fast Money. Casey only gets 87. The
family gets 158 total for $790. |

Rich Way (manager
from Aromas, CA); $20,401 |
|
Amy Johnson
(business writer from Seattle) |
|
James Reeves
(writer orig. from New Orleans) |
Rich came in
this to win yesterday. Today, we'll see if that attitude
carries over. He starts his first defense as champ with
$200 Science Class. After both men spend time in the
red, James finds the Daily Double under $800 Rough
Alternate Literary Endings. With... absolutely nothing
to lose, he bets $1000. The clue: Kitty & Levin's
marriage is great, she thought. My guy stinks. With
that, she pushed hubby under the train. Whoomp! (C-Note:
There it is.... I had to!) Nothing. It was actually the
opposite of the real ending to "Anna Karenina", which my
good friend Rachel (if she's reading this) read... in
depth. James is back under by $1000.
After the break,
James works his way back to tie Rich at $2400 at the
half, with Amy leading at $4200... The rules state that
the closest to Alex's right has the first pick, meaning
that James will start Double Jeopardy!...
... were it not
for a scoring change. Due to a verbal malfunction on
Alex's part, James has $3600, meaning that Rich starts
this round with $800 Vermont, with James finding the
First Daily Double under $1600. With the lead by $200,
he only bets $1000 on the lake of the Ethan Allen III.
"What is Lake Champlain?" Right on for $6200. He finds
the second under $1200 Philosophers. He only risks $1000
again. Complete this Gershwin song: "My nights were
sour, spent with"... "Who is Nietzsche?" Nope. It had to
rhyme, see? It was Schopenhauer, leaving James with
$6400. He makes up for it by shooting into the
lead, $12,000 to Rich's $7200 and Amy's $5400.
Final Jeopardy!
in "Facts About the Presidents": he was the
only 20th Century President who had previously served as
US House Minority Leader. Correct question: Who is
Gerald Ford?
Rich is right,
almost doubling up. James... wrong. Rich wins a close
one with $14,399, giving him a two-day total of $34,800. |

12 shopping days
before Christmas, and 6 days before TPIR Christmas Week.
Here's what happened at 7800 today.
To kick things off, contestant Brent Haas captured a
Honda CRF 100 ($2394) to run a Clearance Sale for a
KeysFitness elliptical trainer, a Heritage safe, and a
Corsican "Magic Art" Cradle. Sale Prices: $1100, $1550,
$2500. After some deliberation with the audience, he
placed $1100 on the cradle ($3225), $1550 on the trainer
($1300), and $2500 on the safe ($2097). Starting off 0/1
today.
Next, contestant Marge Domolino (the next one to arrive
in the Row) picked up a $1980 brass telescope and had a
shot at a Ford Focus ZX3SE in Let 'Em Roll. She only
picked up one additional roll (calling lower between
$5.20 Alka-seltzer Plus and $6.49 Glad ForceFlex trash
bags). Her first roll: 4 CARs and $1000. Without delay,
she took her second roll...for $1500. 0/2.
Act III and we have a Navy lady on stage. Shayla Dalton
(the next newbie in the Row) picked up a collection of
Northern Steel and Timber tables ($975) and took to the
Turntable for a Great Lakes Forte hot tub in Squeeze
Play. Setup: 5 1 4 2 5. She took out the 1 for $5425.
Wrong move. Shoulda taken out the 4. 0/3.
We need to boost things in the 2nd half. Rosita Rovello,
help us out. She claimed a Highbrow Furniture "Lips"
sofa ($800) and took her place on the Turntable to play
Money Game for a Ford Ranger. Board Setup:
39 63 17
80 16 95
18 70 01
(Is that El Cheapo I see?)
Her first pick, 16, was perfect for the front of the
truck. Taking mixed messages from the audience, she took
95 for $95. Then, much to EVERYONE'S relief, picked 01
for a WIN. 1/4.
Let's keep this win streak alive! Contestant Julia
Kovack, who has 21 spayed and neutered farm animals at
home, had a shot at PLINKO after capturing a $1929 set
of Health Craft cookware. After picking up 3 out of 4
chips (stumbling on a $35 nacho warmer), she dropped for
2-$1000, 1-$500, and 1-$0. 1/5.
Finishing up the Pricing Game gauntlet, Donald
Morrisette (no relation) came all the way from Michigan
State's school of Veterinary Medicine to win a pair of
Escalade Power Wheels ($600). His game: Clock Game for
Tubbs snowshoes and a Broyhill computer armoire. Taking
20 seconds to win the $956 set of snowshoes, Donald ran
out of time after being only $2 AWAY from the $988
armoire. 1/6.
Even though he missed the armoire, Donald did end up the
Runner-Up in the Showcase. The Top Winner: our Clearance
Sale manager, Brent.
Our first Showcase showed us the trials and tribulations
of Heidi the Hypochondriac. It contained a 5-disc CD/DVD
sound system, a Kasson Tudor pool table, and a Ford
Mustang GT Coupe Premium. Brent's bid: $35,000.
Showcase #2 was a classic Splendido! showcase. First a
Broyhill Urban View dining room with Noritake
dinnerware, a Samick upright piano, and a 6-night trip
to Barcelona, Spain. Donald's bid: $15,410.
Donald's bid was a decent one, at a difference of $4341
(ARP: $19,751) Brent's bid was closer, $1616, but the
wrong direction (ARP: $33,384). Donald's total take:
$21,307
STATS: 1/6; $49,849
REPORTER'S NOTE: No ticket plug today. Interesting. |

Who
Wants to Be a Millionaire by Don Harpwood, GSNN

Host: Meredith Vieira |

Yesterday, Jen Vine
(North Stonington, CT) reached $200 with what little
time she had. Today, there's plenty of time for her to
make some cash.
There was a month that Jen and her husband Bill prepared
to welcome a little girl into their family. When the kid
was born, Bill held the kid up, and they began wondering
why the kid had 2 umbilical cords. It turns out the baby
was a boy. Yeah. Anyway, with the sudden need to come up
with a boy's name, they flipped through TV channels,
apparently stopping on a WWE show. As a result, the
boy's name is Austin, named after Stone Cold Steve
Austin. Interesting story, isn't it? Anyway, the game
resumes, and along the way through the lower tier, Jen
gets to this for $500...
Angina pectoris is a type of pain caused by the
insufficient supply of blood to what organ?
A: Heart
B: Liver
C: Pancreas
D: Stomach
Jen goes with D... and can you say "llama"? It turns out
the answer was A. And with that, Jen becomes the 3rd
player this season to go home with diddly-squat.
Next up is Allen LeVarge (Moosup, CT). He works at a
casino, counting money. He usually counts a few million
dollars worth each day. Seems like an interesting job,
though the money he counts isn't his. But now, he has a
chance to win a million of his own, and he starts by
knowing that a passenger who tells a cabbie to "Step on
it!" is asking for the cabbie to drive quickly (though
some may have to quell a roach problem anyway). Unlike
Jen, Allen gets through the lower tier, securing at
least $1,000 without any problems. Then, as he goes
through the middle tier, he faces this $8,000
question...
What medical procedure commonly requires patients to lie
inside a giant tube equipped with a powerful magnet?
A: Ultrasound
B: MRI
C: Electrocardiogram
D: CAT scan
Allen asks the audience. 82% of the studio audience and
50% of the AIM users pick B, so he goes with that... and
they're right! On to $16,000...
Musicians commonly use the slang term "woodshedding" to
refer to what activity?
A: Auditioning
B: Rehearsing
C: Playing very loudly
D: Playing out of tune
The 50:50 leaves B and D. Allen has a feeling that it's
B, so he locks it in... and he's right! Now, for
$25,000...
On April 5, 1987, what became the first prime-time show
to run on the Fox TV network?
A: America's Most Wanted
B: 21 Jump Street
C: The Tracey Ullman Show
D: Married... With Children
Allen decides to call his friend Eugene, who is 75-80%
sure that it's D. So, Allen goes with D... and he does
something that none of the teachers last week could do;
he gets to $25,000! With that, he can move on to the
upper tier, and this for $50,000...
Which of these politicians was the losing candidate in
three different presidential elections?
A: William Jennings Bryan
B: Adlai Stevenson
C: Hubert Humphrey
D: George McGovern
Allen decides to use something that also wasn't seen
last week; the Switch-the-Question lifeline. After the
answer is revealed to be A, this substitute question
pops up...
What country has the oldest written constitution that is
still in effect?
A: France
B: Switzerland
C: Canada
D: United States
With nothing to lose at this level, Allen says A... but
it's D! Well, at least he has $25,000!
In the hot seat now is Victor King (Glendale, CA). He's
an attorney. That's all we'll find out about him now, as
they get right into it with him knowing that in boxing,
when a fighter is knocked down, the referee starts
counting to ten (though if he also alerts his bookie,
that may be a cause for concern). A couple of questions
later, and he sees this for $500...
"Woebegone" is an old-fashioned synonym for which of
these common adjectives?
A: Young
B: Sad
C: Wealthy
D: Tall
Victor uses the 50:50, which leaves B and D. He then
says B... and he's right! He then goes on to secure
$1,000, and he easily gets the $2,000 question.
That's where things will stop for today. Things will
resume tomorrow, as Victor will go for more. |
