Syvertsen
(Marie, Cecelia, Clair, Regina, John) |
|
Grunau
(Launa, Jeff, Danny, Megan, Victor); $20,000 |
Another one of those
bicoastal battles with the Syvertsens from Brooklyn. Round 1:
some place a man goes where he sucks in his gut to look
better (5) Launa's gym and Marie's bar tie for 2 and 3,
so it goes to Launa, because she was quicker to the
buzzer. A restaurant comes in at #5, but will the
Syvertsens steal with beach? Number one! Syvertsens get
52. Other answer: party.
Round 2: a song with the
word "moon" in the title (5). You know, there's a joke
in here... but I don't get a chance to make it, because,
well... Cecelia has diarrhea of the mouth and #2, "Blue
Moon". Jeff gets #3, "Moon over Miami". "Moon River" is
number one. Thanks, Clair! No more songs here, so we go
to the champs, who have Van Morrison on the brain. Let's
see "Dancin' in the Moonlight". D'oh, not there.
Syvertsens up to 124. Other answers: "By The Light of
the Silvery Moon", "Harvest Moon".
Double Round: something
you associate with Boston (full board).
The Red Sox beat creme pies, 2 to 5, giving the
Syvertsens control. Marie gets #1, baked beans. Can the
champs steal with the Celtics? No! The challengers are
up to 230. Other answers: Boston Tea Party,
seafood/chowder, Boston accent.
Triple Round: a famous
person who's known for giving advice (4).
Regina scores top of the board with Dr. Phil. Dr. Ruth,
Oprah, and .. that's it. The Grunaus try Dear Abby...
Got it for 183! That forces...
Sudden Death: a child's
activity in which parents show up for moral support.
Victor's in... "Class". Not there. John can seal it...
"Little League game." Got it! Syvertsens win, 437-183.
Call it a state of Marie
Clair, as both players get the $20,000. |

Back to School Week rolls
on...
|
Madison Ball
(future architect from Montgomery, TX) |
|
Brady Newell
(either a future lawyer or chef from Derwood, MD) |
|
Dylan Smith (honor
roll student from The Bronx, NY) |
Let's get two things
straight first off. 1) Madison's a dude (and moreover, a
dude with his mind on his money and his money on his
mind), and Brady's a girl. 2) No one's mom writes or
reads this site that we know of. But hey, I don't know.
Stranger things have happened.
Madison's first $200
Warner Bros. Animation. But we have to go to the Solar
System for $600 for this Daily Double. Madison, in a
relatively distant second with $800, only bets what he
has. For $1600 or nothing at all, here's your Daily
Double: using Newton's Laws of Motion, astronomer Edmund
Halley determined that these travel in elliptical
orbits. "What are comets?" And he doubles up to $1600!
Oh, did we mention the
free computer/printer pack from AOL for every kid
playing this week? Well, just in case we didn't, there
you go then. Madi$on (it's on his screen, dudes) can buy
his own with the $4600 he has at the half. Dylan is
close behind at $4000, but Brady, still stalled at the
gate with $200, will kick off Double Jeopardy!... after
the break.
Okay, break's over. Back
to work. Brady starts with $400 Autumn Words, and had
she hung onto it, she probably would've found the Daily
Double under $2000. However, it belongs to Dylan, who
fronts the level. What comes from the Latin for eight?
"No.." October. This month. He drops to $3600. Second
Daily Double will not be played. And even if it were, it
couldn't help poor Brady, as she is out with -$5000. I
know this is Kids' Week and I shouldn't really be cruel
but... ugh... painful. It's Madi$on at $13,400 versus
Dylan at $4000 going into...
Final Jeopardy! in
"Classic Literature": Chapter 1 of this book
describes "a cyclone cellar, where the family could go
in case one of those... whirlwinds arose".
Correct response: What is "The Wizard of Oz"?
Madi$on even included
the tornado drawing, so Mr. $ is going home with $,
$18,799 to be exact. |

Barry (counselor at a group home) & his
lady friend Jo
(graphic designer) |
Mark & Jennifer
apparently read the Shorts page yesterday, because the
first thing they do is SCORE for 25. But Barry & Jo get
their MOTOR running... to a red stopper. Mark & Jennifer
BULLY their way back to control. They follow with LIGHT,
VAULT, and HEARS, but Mark is stopped... Barry & Jo get
back up in it with CARRY and WAIST... and the Lingo to
tie it up at 125. And that's the way round 1 ends.
Round 2 starts with the
Reds getting a new board. And a new word, DROWN, but
Barry's stopped by a stopper. They recover with TACKY
and SHOTS, but get shot by another stopper. On the
bright side... Air guitar to the Lingo music! Air guitar
to the win cue, Barry & Jo win, 275-125.
With two Bonus Lingo letters, Barry & Jo get TRICK, APPLY, MAGIC,
GRASS, HABIT, SMALL, and TRUST for seven bills and seven balls.
Lucky board up, and it's $10,000 for 20. It's what we call a 10
for 20 situation. Jo's down... and up with... 16. D'oh! It's a
good 16, though, Jo says. Barry gets the 20 later for $5000. |

Tuesday's Child...
Today's show could have been one for the ages. Here's
what went down at 7800.
Contestant Drew Sultan (sic), after capturing a Hatteras
Hammocks outdoor swing valued at $1078, claimed to Bob
that he didn't know how to play Clock Game, but played
it in true buzzer-beater fashion. After winning an $824
Magnussen sink cabinet with 11.5 seconds left, he won a
Barbecues Galore grill and his $1000 bonus with only .75
seconds left on the clock.
Next, contestant Deborah Martin captured a $1097 Kichler
Lighting chandelier for a chance to play Cliff Hangers
for a $2995 Aquacat Catamaran. She managed to capture
the catamaran, an ice shaver, a laser measurer and a
desktop bubble light after moving Hans only 11 steps.
Had she gone the 20-30-40 route, he would have only
moved 8. Still masterful playing, though.
All this winning and still no car yet. Keyword: "Yet."
Contestant Robert Van Der Linden won a collection of
games, consisting of Dominoes, Mah Jongg, Backgammon,
playing cards, and a chess set, valued at $805. He takes
the stage to play One Away (heavy rotation this season,
eh?) for a Pontiac Vibe. Van Der Linden earned two honks
for a set price of $18,423. He changed the last three
numbers to form $18,461 and won the car.
At the half, contestant Zachary Russell kept the winning
streak alive. After claiming an Everlast Multi-fitness
center package, valued at $1118, he won a 6 night trip
to Victoria, British Columbia in Double Prices, valued
at $2605.
>From then on, the winning screeched. Contestant Patrick
Pfall (sic) blew $8000 in a very late playing of It's In
The Bag by putting Hot Pockets in a $3.35 bag meant for
Smucker's grape jelly. Also, contestant Shannon Sanders
captured a giant American flag valued at $286 instead of
a Ford Focus ZX4SE playing Any Number.
Onto the Turntable for the climactic Showcases, with
your Top Winner, Robert, and your Runner-Up, Patrick.
The first Showcase, a set of United States travel books,
a Flexsteel living room with carpet from Hibernia Woolen
Mills, and a Ford Five hundred SE, was PASSED by Robert
to get a bid of $24,560 from Patrick.
Robert's Showcase, which showed us some uncommon warning
labels, offered a Motorola cell phone, a Sonoma Spas hot
tub, and a Fleetwood Mallard 180FK travel trailer.
Robert's bid, after Brandi put an Overbid warning label
ON the podium, was $27,500. Patrick's bid was $6674 off
from his Showcase (ARP $31,234), however Robert didn't
heed his warning label and went over by only $92 (ARP
$27,408). Patrick ended up the day's big winner with a
total take of $31,794.
Rich was sporting the black threads today.

Sara Marie
(Peoria, IL; works backstage at a motivational
speaking tour); favorites include Diddy and Britney
Spears |
|
BC
(San Diego, CA; plays for a cover band); considers
herself the next Gwen Stefani |
|
Seth
Manlove (25; Lancaster, PA; actor/published
poet); loves pinball, soul and "Napoleon Dynamite." |
We had guys yesterday.
Now we have girls. Seth's song must include these words:
Manlove (his last name), pinball (his favorite game),
affectionate (described as), gosh (from "Napoleon
Dynamite"). Who wants to go to Puerto Vallarta? Let's
write songs.
Sara Marie gets to hang with the
band, while BC goes into the writing room with RC. BC wants to
make a rocking love song, while Sara Marie... thoroughly confuses
the band. Apparently both players like saying "Manlove". Ryan's
notes on BC: doesn't really know how to work in challenges. She
asks for his help a lot.
Switch off time. Lyrics just fall
off of Sara Marie's mind. "Whatever makes you sing better."
Agreed. Meanwhile, BC tries to translate chords to the band. Looks
like they might have it. Ryan's notes: she's got to decide on
either singing or playing and singing. "If I were her, I'd just
sing."
Performance time, let's meet
Manlove. Now let's get rid of Manlove. It's time for Sara Marie to
do her thing. Her song: "None Other Than Manlove". Lyrics work,
but I'd get a new title. She takes Ryan's advice and "just sings".
Just sings well. I'd go out with her... But that's just me. "I
love how she used my name in the chorus!" Seth says.
Next up, BC, as she thinks they
saved the best for last. Her song: "Take a Chance on Me". If you
listen closely, you can barely hear her force out "Gosh". Not as
strong as Sara Marie, and I think she has this one in the bag.
Let's see what Seth thinks. "She was really good. It's gonna be a
tough decision."
Momento del verdad... Seth
picked... BC. Gosh? |

Guillermo is looking for
tourists, and Paula and Don Julio fit the bill. They
could also fit very nicely in the front of a $16,220 PT
Cruiser! They will win that if they can price some
products. The products are Air freshener Spray, then
Rust-O-Leum, then Lysol, then Fix-A-Flat. They has to
price the Air Freshener within $2.00. Guess - $1.99.
Price - $1.99. No problem there. Next - the Rust-O-Leum
within $1.50. Guess - $2.99. Price - $3.54 and they are
2 for 2. Next - Lysol within $1.00. Guess - $2.99 Price
- $2.98. The coule is hot, hot, hot! Finally, the
Fix-A-Flat within 50 cents. Guess - $3.99. Price...Not
just yet. Guillermo offers Curtain #2- which they don't
want and give up a living room and table set worth
$1,869. Did they win the car? The Price is...$5.47 They
don't win the car, but they do get $200 for each correct
item for a consolation gift of $650.
We bring out the big cash register for Doctor Fred. He
can try to hit a button or he can go for Curtain #3. The
Doctor goes for the Curtain, but this time, we had $500,
$500, $100, $100 and $100. So he could have gotten $500.
Instead, he gets lawn mower and storage shed worth $737,
so he got a good deal.
It's time to put on your dancing shoes and bolero to the
magic shoe box. Inside the box today is a yellow makeup
case and a purple makeup case. Arturo the farmer will
take one of the cases and will give the other one to
Isidra the bride. Arturo takes the yellow one - and can
trade it for Curtain #2. He takes the curtain and gives
up $500. What does he get? A Janitor putting trash in a
Chasco-cannon. Now it's up to Isidra, who decides to
give up the makeup and go for Curtain #1. This time, we
had only $100, so she makes a good choice.
The gets a washer/dryer system worth $1,098! Does she
want to give it right back for the Gran Trato? No she
doesn't, but the doctor does and so do the tourist
couple. Dr. Fred wants Curtain #2 and the couple want
curtain #1. What's behind Curtain #3? A bedroom set
worth $2,301. What's behind #...1? Money - $850, which
is a $200 jump for the couple. It's a big jump, however,
for Freddie, who gets the Gran Trato! Today, the Trato
is a Trip to Huatulco, Mexico and a new kitchen
(featuring a stove, refrigerator and dishwasher) with a
total value of $5,127! It's a great deal for Freddie as
we have a Gran Trato winner for 4 straight shows. Tune
in tomorrow to see if we can make it 5. |

Yesterday, Cheryl Stokes
(Raleigh, NC) made it up to $50,000, but had to use all
of her lifelines on the way. Can she get to the million
on her own?
Cheryl has watched the show a lot, but as far as being
on the show goes, she would have been happy with $4,000.
So imagine how happy she is at this point. Anyway, she's
4 questions away from the top prize, so they get to it
with this $100,000 question...
"Yankee Doodle" is the official song of what U.S. state?
A: Massachusetts
B: Connecticut
C: Rhode Island
D: Pennsylvania
Cheryl says she has an inkling that it's either A or D,
but she doesn't know it enough to take the risk, so she
walks. Good thing, too, because it's neither A or D;
it's B. So, for the new baby and the new business (which
were mentioned yesterday), Cheryl has $50,000, which is
a very good amount of money.
Next in the hot seat is Paul Aquavia (Naugatuck, CT),
who did know the answer to that question, considering
where he's from. He also happened to have a dream where
he won the million dollars, but lost the check.
Hopefully, one of those things can really happen to him,
and I don't mean the losing of the check. He starts with
a question asking what classic fighting action figure
Hasbro introduced in the 1960s, and Paul knows it's G.I.
Joe. A few questions later, and he gets this for
$1,000...
How many letters in the English alphabet have more than
one syllable in their name?
A: 0
B: 1
C: 2
D: 3
Paul thinks about it for a bit, then says A... but it's
B! The letter W has multiple syllables in its name!
Unfortunately, that means he's heading home with
nothing, and we already have the second llama of the
season, only 8 days after the first.
Let's see if Michelle Blakeney (Winsted, CT) can do
better. She is a first-grade teacher, and she pretty
much got herself a new look, just for this show. New
dress, hair done, etc. She starts by knowing that at a
restaurant, "rare" is commonly used to mean the opposite
of "well-done" (serving meat that is "still mooing" is
generally a bad idea, if you ask me). Michelle does
proceed farther than the previous contestant, going
through questions such as one which asks what language "mazel
tov!" means "good luck" in (Hebrew). In fact, she keeps
her momentum going up until the $16,000 question, which
is as follows...
Julia Child's illustrious career was jumpstarted by the
publication of her 1961 book "Mastering the Art of"
what?
A: Baking
B: French Cooking
C: Italian Cooking
D: Soups and Sauces
Michelle asks the audience, and 76% of the studio
audience says B, while 37% of the AIM users agree. She
actually had an inkling that it could be B, but this
pretty much sealed her decision, as she says B... and is
right! On to $25,000...
Scientists believe that bubbles collapsing in synovial
fluid result in the sound that occurs when you do what?
A: Snore
B: Hiccup
C: Crack your knuckles
D: Pop your ears
Michelle decides to call Tim, her boyfriend's brother,
who happens to be a scientist. Should have been a good
choice, but after Michelle had to repeat the question,
just as Tim was about to say what he thinks it is, time
runs out. Ouch. So, Michelle uses the 50:50, leaving C
and D. She's leaning a bit towards C, but she's not sure
enough, so Michelle walks with $16,000. Oh, and it was
C.
Andrea Ribaudo (New York, NY) is today's 4th player, and
she says she's going to let her father invest whatever
she wins, and let it grow into even more money. Neat
idea. Andrea begins by knowing that in airline frequent
flyer programs, points earned by consumers are usually
measured in terms of miles. Along the way, she does have
to use the 50:50 at the $1,000 level to help figure out
that in 1915, a chemist combined his sister's name
"Mabel" with "Vaseline" to get the name for a famous
brand of cosmetics. After that, she gets to $2,000...
..before the horn goes off. Andrea will attempt to make
more money (which her father could invest) tomorrow. |
