Brown
(Dawan, Ericka, Gayle, Rhonda, Misha); $520 |
Round 1: a TV personality
adored by housewives
(6). Chuck Norris can divide by zero, but he's not on
the board. Dawan's Oprah is for #1. Also adored: Dr.
Phil and Montel Williams. Is Martha Stewart there for
the steal? Nope. The champs get 59. Other answers: Regis
Philbin, Bob Barker, Emeril Lagasse.
Round 2: real or
fictional, something with "Little" in their name (5).
Ericka gets #3, Stuart Little. Number one courtesy of
Rhonda: Little Richard. The Ayalas try again with the
Three Little Pigs... Not there, the Browns lead with
102. Other answers: Rich Little, Little John, Little Boy
Blue.
Double: an article of
men's clothing a woman looks sexy wearing (5). Gayle's
T-shirt... #3. Rhonda gets #2, boxer. Misha's dress
shirt is #1. The tie is at #4. The Ayalas try to steal
with a jacket... Not there. The champs have 282. Other
answer: tank top.
Triple: something most
men can't resist stopping to take a look at (4).
Steven gets the big one, women. Cars are up there... But
what about sports? The Browns hope so... Right for the
win, 552-0. Other answer: accidents.
Rhonda and Ericka try
again at Fast Money, ending up with another $915, giving
them $1435 for two days.
Yesterday we said that
the Gomezes were the first five-timers this season...
they're actually the second. Our apologies. Anyway, in
the nightcap, we've got two new families, the Truitts
(Lyn, Andrea, Val, Cabrina, Bob) and the Gibsons
(Christine, John, Dave, Cal, Juli) and two new
scoreboards on the podium fronts (C-Note: I guess the
new camera angles were just too hard to figure). Gibsons
lead, 260-81. Triple: something you try to avoid when
camping in the woods (4). Bears are #1 for Cabrina. Bugs
are also on the list. The Gibsons try to win it with
snakes... #3! Gibsons win, 485-81. Other answer: skunks.
Cal and Christine team up
for $20,000 on their first time at the Fast Money. |

Regina Merrill
Lincoln, NE
future zookeeper |
Rowan Spake
Portland, OR
interested in nanotechnology and being in a band |
Cary Williams
Milton, MA
honor student |
The grownups get a break
from the Jeopardy! this week, because it's time to go
back to school.
Fictional Characters $200 is Regina's first choice, but
it's Rowan who stands to gain with $800, the first
Daily Double. He bets $300 on a title stuffed hare with
the subtitle "How Toys Become Real". "What is the
Velveteen Rabbit?" Right for $900!
He claims the bottom spot at
the half by only $100, $5300 to Regina's $5400. Cary
leads with $5600. Nice tight game as Rowan preps himself
to start Double Jeopardy!...
with $400 I Wanna Be... Rowan finds
the first Daily Double way late under $1600 7-Letter
Words. He goes $3000. The clue: a place of seclusion, or
an army's forced withdrawal before an enemy. "What is a
retreat?" Right for $11,100. Rowan could've made it a
back-to-back with $2000 Presidential Families, but that
clue goes to Regina. The bet is $1000 on the father of
Martin Jr. "Who is Kennedy?" Nope, it was Martin van
Buren, leaving her $10,400 to Rowan's $11,100 and Cary's
$15,200.
Final Jeopardy! in Children's Lit: this Roald Dahl
begins, "These two very old people are the father and
mother of Mr. Bucket". Correct question: what is
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"?
Regina takes the lead, so it's up to Cary.... Cary's
right to win it with $20,200. |

The
Price is Right by Chico Alexander, GSNN
Air time: 11a ET/10a CT on CBS
Host: Bob Barker |
|
Monday, July 17, 2006. Game
Show Congress Day 2006 at TPIR. A group of us brave the
LA night to guarantee front row seats at "The Price is
Right". Our patience are well rewarded. Fastforward to
today, when you find out what happened with us that day.
First one to Contestant's
Row... first-time Congress delegate Aaron Huertas! He,
Heather Stunkel, Delia Doeschl, and Mark Weaver are the
first to bid on a garden shed. The shed goes for $1269,
as Delia plays Danger Price for bowling equipment,
self-study language courses, a dinette, and luggage. The
Danger Price today: $930. She picks the bowling
equipment... $235. Then, the luggage... $580. Then the
language courses... $1121! Our first winner!
Next up, a set of
dumbbells. If you listen very carefully, you'll hear the
third row (our row) scream $1063 when Aaron is called to
big. He listens... Joe nods his head in approval...
and Aaron picks up $500 for it. He can pick up more
money for that, because it's time for Plinko! With chips
from Bob, a paper shredder worth $35, a $50 breakfast
maker, a $57 cordless toothbrush, and a $49 blender,
Aaron racks up $1500.
(C-Note: What happens
next is pretty interesting. Called down to Contestant's
Row: Suzanne Steban. That's what you saw. What you
didn't see was that in an outtake, a lady by the name of
Shanna Gepner came on down, thinking that she was next
on Rich's list. Right after the first Showdown, it turns
out that she was premature by one. But more on that
later.)
Mark, who switched places
during round 2, gets a $1449 area rug in earnest as he
gets a shot at a Ford Focus in the Money Game. The
board...
95 |
35 |
80 |
44 |
17 |
19 |
75 |
18 |
60 |
Middle number is... 2.
Mark goes with 17 first... Front! Next, 35... dollars.
Then 60... The back! Car's worth $17,260!
Will our Aaron make like
Carrie Bailey one year prior and head to the Showcase?
... Nope. Mark beats him out. Oh well.
Back to Shanna and
Suzanne for a bit. Shanna gets out with a $2895 day
sailer. Time for a trip to Montreal in Check-Out. Last
year, a technical difficulty had us rolling in the
aisles. This year... No such luck. Instead, we play the
game straight with Pillsbury crescent rolls (her guess:
$2.39... exacta), Chips Ahoy cookies (55c... exactly),
Francesco Rinaldi pasta sauce ($2... one penny off with
$1.99), Pringles' chips ($1.25... 79c there), and Jif
extra crunchy peanut butter. Her guess... $3.50. Actual
price: $2.99! That's enough for a win.
Carol Hodge inherits the
hot spot, and gets a $2396 bar set. Can she win a Chevy
Malibu Maxx in One Away? The price is NOT $31,826. She
tries $22,735. One... two... two honks. She tries
$20,945. That's right.
Last chance for Heather
to win with a team dual trike. Price: $1299. Winner...
Heather! She gets to try for a bed with sleep set in
Double Prices. Is it $6011 or $4112? She goes with
$4112.. and that's another win!
Shanna and Carol are in
spinoff mode, as Shanna gets 50. Carol... only 15. And
your Showcase is set. Top winner: Shanna. Runner up:
Mark.
First up, prizes that
come alive with a flick of a switch, like a home theatre
system, a barrel sauna, and a travel trailer. Shanna
bids $21,500. Mark gets a visit from Gertie the
Gardener, who grows a gas range, a trip to Paris, and a
Chrysler Sebring. He bids $33,000. Actual price:
$38,854, a difference of $5854. Actual price of Shanna's
Showcase: $27,692, for a difference of... $6692. Not
good enough as Mark wins this one with $57,598.
STATS: 5-1, $100,836. |

Mothers-in-Law (Magnolia,
Arilda, Margarita, Bailda, Mercedes); $17,000 |
Sons-in-Law (Carlos, Johan, Alex, Nelson, Rene) |
I'm hoping the sons can
at least take one game, but their mothers-in-law are not
making this easy. The guys lead, 134-79. Double Round:
an Olympic sporting event (3). Nelson fires with
athletics... #1. Swimming is #2. Can the mothers steal
with gymnastics? Yep. They lead with 225.
Triple: something made
only for two people (4). A car is good for #2 for
Mercedes. The sons try with a motorcycle for the
steal... Got it for the lead, 260-225. But after we
reveal bed (number one), and marriage, we're going to...
Muerte Súbita: besides a
doctor, who can be next to the mother when she's giving
birth? That's Carlos. "La enfermera." Nurse... not
there. Magnolia? "El esposo." Husband is the right
answer for the win, 489-260.
Dinero Rápido: Balida is
in isolation again. Margarita is first with the lucky
table, where she pulls "extra points". Together, they
come up with 118.... Extra points are a moot point for
$500 more, giving the moms-in-law $17,500.
Another five-of-a-kind
coming...
South Florida Police
(Richard, Roquecora, Israel, Elson, Moises); $500 |
South Florida
Firefighters (Luis,
Tony, Javier, Luis, Frank); $5500 |
The firefighters lead it
after four, leading 241-35. Triple: a part of your car
that your life depends on (3). Frank's belt is #2. Po-po
steals it with the brakes for 224. Other answer:
steering wheel. Again, we go to...
Muerte Súbita: a baby's
first word. That's Luis. "Mama." That's game for the
firefighters, 505-224.
The Luises are at Dinero Rápido
again,
where Capt. Luis draws... "extra points!" The
two get 184. Extra points are... 10. D'oh! Oh well, they
get another $500.

Matthew Helland

pastor who likes biking and playing the guitar |
Control question, answer
is "walrus". Matt tries "What water animal has large
tusks?" Close. It's "water-Y". Sonja gets the first
crack at the first question in round 1. The answer is
"saxophone". "What instrument does Lisa Simpson play?"
That puts Sonja into the lead with 12 to Matt's 8.
Next answer... "Tom
Petty". "Who's back up band is the Heartbreakers?"
Sonja solves another one, giving her the 25-11 lead.
Next answer... "Venice". The question: "What

running away with it, 42-16.

can't capitalize. He gets 10 for one later, and another
10 as he solves "What divides the earth's Northern and
Southern Hemispheres? The Equator" for 36 to Sonja's 76.
Next, an eight-letter
answer. Question goes the distance with "What popular
treat was invented by an eleven-year-old boy?" Answer...
Popsicle. If Matt got a few of those answers, he
would've won it, but it's Sonja's game, 88-50.
Bonus Question with 88
seconds. This is what Sonja has to work with...
.hat color..ul t.io had
th. hit CD "A...ica. Idiot"? ----- ---.

Returning to the hot seat
today is Melissa Schmatz (Newtown, PA), who currently
has $8,000 and 2 lifelines left. As was mentioned
yesterday, she knows a bunch of relaxation techniques,
but they don't seem to be working for her here. Well,
the hot seat can do that to a person. Anyway, the game
resumes, and she soon gets to this...
[$25,000]
In 2005, what drama kept fans guessing about the
identity of a spooky psychopath known as "The Carver"?
A: Nip/Tuck
B: The Shield
C: Medium
D: Cold Case
She says she knows this. Melissa says A... and she has
$25,000! Now, with 3 lifelines available (including
Switch-the-Question), she goes on to the upper tier...
[$50,000]
What Japanese carmaker's logo depicts six stars from the
Pleiades star cluster?
A: Mitsubishi
B: Mazda
C: Subaru
D: Suzuki
Melissa calls her dad, William, and he's 70% sure that
it's C. She goes with that... and she got it! Moving
on...
[$100,000]
Antidotes for poisonous snakebites are commonly derived
from the blood of which of these animals?
A: Toads
B: Chimpanzees
C: Horses
D: Pigs
Melissa hadn't quite studied this bit yet, but she does
plan to. She does have an inkling, though, and she uses
the 50:50, which leaves A and C. But her inkling was
apparently neither of those. So, she switches it out. If
she'd have guessed, though, she'd say A... but it was C.
So, after that, she now faces this...
[$100,000] (Q)
Vostok 1, the first spacecraft to send a man into space,
was named after the Russian word for what?
A: East
B: Future
C: Sun
D: Flight
Apparently, Melissa had been playing a trivia game since
finding out that she'd be on this show, and the subject
of the first spacecraft that Russia sent up came up
during that time. As a result, she's stuck between B and
C, but she can't decide on one, so she walks. It turns
out that it was neither of those; it was A. So, with
that, she leaves $50,000 richer!
Next up is Gregg LaVasseur (Dover, NH), a first class
petty officer with the U.S. Coast Guard. And the entire
Coast Guard knows he's here, so they'll all be watching.
I guess he'd better do well, then. Gregg starts by
knowing that someone who is the center of attention is
said to be "in the limelight" (and maybe in the National
Enquirer, depending on who it is). Then, this question
comes along...
[$200]
In the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb," what
phrase is used to describe the lamb's fleece?
A: White as snow
B: Soft as clouds
C: Fine as silk
D: Sweet as sugar
Usually, usage of a lifeline this early is not a good
sign. It turns out that nursery rhymes are a weakness
for Gregg, so he asks the audience. Of course, they come
through with a whopping 95% for A. (Just for the record,
4% said D, and the other 1% said C.) And of course,
Gregg trusts them, and gets it. Soon enough, he reaches
$1,000, then sees this...
[$2,000]
Until 1979, what country was ruled for centuries by
leaders known as "shahs"?
A: Iran
B: India
C: Turkey
D: Jordan
The 50:50 leaves A and C. Gregg says A... and he's
right! Next question...
[$4,000]
In 2006, the ubiquitous song "Bad Day" gained massive
exposure as the unofficial anthem of what reality show?
A: Project Runway
B: American Idol
C: Dancing with the Stars
D: Survivor
Not a problem for those of us who watched the show in
question, but Gregg says he doesn't watch enough TV.
Still, he tries to reason his way through it; he figures
it's either A or C. Gregg goes with A... but it's B!
This has indeed been a "Bad Day" for him, as that sends
him home with $1,000.
And that's how today's episode ends. See ya tomorrow! |
