Blind
Auditions #1
February 5
Round 1 of the search for
the season 2 Voice is in the books, and so far, reigning
champion Adam has come up with ONE. Blake and Cee-Lo
also have one, but Christina has two. That can and will
change in the next two hours of television, but the
question... Who will come up with their team of eight
first?
We'll find out in a moment, but first, we
begin with an all-coach jam on Prince's "1999". Cee-Lo likes shiny
get-ups, doesn't he?
First down the line is The Line (composed
of Hailey Steele and Leland Grant, both of Nashville). If Leland looks
familiar, he should. He was on a VH1 series called "In
Search of the Partridge Family", where he won the role of Keith
(C-Note: Emma Stone won the role of Laurie. Wonder what she's up to
now...). The pilot that resulted was not picked up for series, but maybe
a coach will pick him and Hailey up with their rendition of Tom Petty &
the Heartbreakers' "American Girl". Not bad for something that started
out with Leland offering a shot of Jack. Blake calls dibs... and the
other coaches follow suit... "Not nice!" No, Blake, but SMART. Now the
choice is on the group. They pick... CHRISTINA.
Next up, Jamar Rogers, who is delivered
his invite from Carson personally. When he's not singing, he's feeding
the less fortunate with God's Love We Deliver. He's gotten clean off of
crystal meth, but it came at a high cost. Because of his drug use, he
was HIV-positive. Should be known that he was actually on the VERY FIRST
season of "American Idol" back in 2002. He sang "Careless Whisper" and
choked. Hopefully he won't do the same with "Seven Nation Army" by the
White Stripes. This time.... CEE LO hits it... and he's the only one, so
the choice is locked.
Neal Middleton (33, SLC, UT) is a
rock'n'roll family man. He doesn't have health insurance, and he's
hoping that this show will be his ticket to overcoming an accident he
had a few years ago. He beat death off then. Will he do so again with
"Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye? He gives a textbook rocker performance...
but the tone is a little bit overreaching. And he has the emotion of a
stump. Give the coaches credit, they're not dumb. And so Neal will have
to settle for a "thanks, but no." Joining him on the loser train: TJ
Gibson, Aly Jados (who was on Idol LAST YEAR, for cripes sake), and Sam
Jones.
Gwen Sebastian (37, Hebron, ND, don'tcha
know) grew up around her musician family, and she's currently dating her
drummer. They want to have some little musicians of their own, but know
that it'll have to be on the backburner for her career. Her choice,
"Stay" by Sugarland. And.... Blake's in. And so is Cee-Lo. "Dammit, Cee-Lo!"
And so is Adam. ... "Damn it!" Blake's taking it very personal. Maybe
Gwen should choose him and shut him up... That seems to work, you betcha.
Time is running out for Kim Yarbrough
(50, LA), or so she says. She has had almost every job up to and
including security detail with Dave Matthews. People say "50?" She says
"Whatever". This could be the outlet she's looking for. ON THE OTHER
HAND, here comes Pamela Rose (28, Cooper City, FL), a polar opposite
whose mother had to do ... almost every job up to and including security
detail with Dave Matthews. So whose voice comes out with "Already Gone"
by Kelly Clarkson? That would be ... Pamela's. She sounds dramatic,
almost cloyingly so. She's trying... but the coaches are not biting. She
has all the star elements, but she doesn't have star quality.
Will the same be said for Kim Yarbrough?
She delivers "Tell Me Something Good" by Rufus & Chaka Khan. She thinks
she's killing it... and ADAM agrees, as if to say, I gotta see this
chick. Christina... makes it a race. Kim makes her choice... and Team
ADAM is +1.
Now we're going to war with SSG Angie
Johnson, USAF (31, St. Louis), a veteran of the United States Air Force
Band. I would've guessed Tops in Blue. She's been on seven tours, one of
which resulted in a YouTube video that got 11,000,000 hits. That led to
Facebook friend requests... and eventually Carson's Twitter page. Which
lead her to this stage... and "Heartbreaker" by Pat Benatar. After
Carson Daly shows the most emotion he's ever shown on 20 years of
television, Cee Lo hits it... and he's the only one, though Adam's a
little tempted. And Christina... is kicking herself.
Dez Duron (21, Shreveport, LA) is hoping
to trade his Yale football coach for a "Voice" coach. And Mr. Duron...
1988 called, they want their feathery haircut back. His dad did
likewise, signing to the Redskins, quitting, then winning a Grammy for a
gospel song. He goes the boy-band route with "I Want It That Way".
Unfortunately, too many runs and not a strong vocal lead the panel to
say "we don't want it that way."
Lindsey Pavao (22, Sacramento) wanted to
be an inventor as a kid. Now she wants to invent tunes, having listened
to a lot of Radiohead as a kid. She cut her teeth at coffee shops, but
now she wants the judges to "Say Aah" like Trey Songz. She's REALLY
experimental, singing a male-oriented song as less of a club banger and
more of a subdued trance music. Good enough for Christina. Good enough
for Cee-Lo. Good enough for Blake?! Seriously? Well, good enough for me.
Anyway, Lindsey goes with CHRISTINA, who was the first to hit her magic
button.
Jermaine Paul (33, Orange County, NY)
sang for Alicia Keys, who ended up asking him to be a back up singer. He
wants to sing in the spotlight, though. The thanks goes for that to...
his daughter. AND Alicia Keys happened to record a good-luck charm for
him. We'll hear from him later. Meanwhile, Hoja Lopez (25, Houston)
hopes to translate being hyper into being vocal with "Teenage Dream".
That.... sounded... like a nightmare.
Back to Jermaine, who will try to turn a
chair with "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne. It sounds a little
complicated for me, here's this big bulky singer with the man physique
and out comes the voice of a little girl. Cee Lo doesn't think like I
do... and neither does Blake. And to make this even MORE complicated...
Jermaine goes with BLAKE. Hey, this could be the seed of some really big
fruit.
Finally, we end up with Angel Taylor (23,
Los Angeles), who would be filed under "singers who didn't quite make it
the first time around". She sees this as "moving forward" from a
tumultuous childhood. What better way to describe that than with Adele's
"Someone Like You". Sounds a little pitchy dawg. But Adam's willing to
take a chance. Blake joins in, and Cee-Lo thinks a bit... and makes it a
triple. And Angel ends up taking a chance on... ADAM.
Let's review the teams SO FAR.
