In the past, the most emotional part
of the show is when the Survivors get a visit from the Loved Ones
to give themselves the boost they need to get through the last week
or two. Well, THIS time, on SURVIVOR: BLOOD vs. WATER
(season 27 of the longest-running reality show on network TV), the
Loved Ones ARE Survivors! Ten Survivors from past seasons bring
someone they love to live on the Luzon Strait in the Philippines
to Outplay, Outwit and Outlast the others for the one million dollars!

THE GAME HAS BEGUN. TONIGHT IS
YOUR FIRST NIGHT ON THE ISLAND. WITHOUT ANY SUPPLIES, YOU MUST RELY ON YOUR
LOVED ONE FOR PROTECTION, COMFORT & SURVIVAL.
AT DAY BREAK FOLLOW YOUR MAP TO THE BEACH WHERE YOU
WILL RECEIVE FURTHER INSTRUCTION. |

Some are excited, some
are confused...NONE want to sleep on the ground. But sleep they
do...
DAY 1: TEAMS, VOTES AND REDEMPTION.
The twenty Americans rise and/or shine and follow their maps to
the spot where good ol' "Uncle Grandpa" Jeff Probst. (At
least he has more time now that his talk show's canceled.) Hayden
finds it hard to compare the comforts of the Big Brother
house to the jungle where they just woke up.
OK, good news: your Loved
Ones are here, vets.
The bad news: you ain't
playing WITH them...but AGAINST them! The Tribes are set up...

Vets are on Galang ("respect"
in Tagalog), Loved Ones (whom I'll be blogging about) are on Tadhana
("honor" in Tagalog). Over half the Survivors are looking
forward to facing their loved ones in battle. Katie wants to show
her mom up, while Tina thinks that seeing that a loved one is gone
will be sad. Famous QB Brad Culpepper (whom Uncle Jeff will call
by last name) says he's torn between beating his wife...in the Challenges,
that is...and fearing her departure. This...gets him a lot of stares.
After the split, Uncle Jeff springs
ANOTHER surprise: the first Double Tribal Council...is RIGHT NOW!
One person from EACH TRIBE has to go bye-bye after just ONE NIGHT
on the island!! Hayden is shocked, knowing that this will all be
about first impressions. Ol' King Colton...is sweating bullets.
It is time to vote! The 20 people take
their own parchment and marker and write down the name of someone
they just met (or, in a few cases on Galang, one they dealt with
before). Uncle Jeff starts with Tadhana and has them reveal their
votes:
Vytas: LAURA B.
Culpepper: "LAURA ughh"
Hayden: LAURA
Laura: "Gervase's Loved One (MARISSA), so sorry"
Caleb: LAURA
Ciera: LAURA
That's five votes and that's enough.
Rupert's wife is outta here. Now to the Galang tribe:
Candice: LAURA M. ("Only because
I don't know anything about her")
Tyson: LAURA
Tina: CANDICE (for the same reason as Candice)
Kat: CANDICE
Colton: CANDICE
Rupert: LAURA
Monica: CANDICE
Aras: GERVASE ("I'm a Redskins fan")
Laura:...
...CANDICE! (same reason as Tina)
So the three-time Survivor and the
wife of the only FOUR-time Survivor in this game are going home.
Or...ARE they?
Uncle Jeff talks about another island
that's been in cold storage for the last year: Redemption Island!
Candice and Laura B. will be the first two residents and will try
to win their way back INTO the game. Oh...one more thing: if John
and/or Rupert would like to take their place(s) and have their loved
one on the Tribe that DIDN'T vote them off, now's the time to sacrifice
themselves. For Rupert, it's no decision: he goes to RI and Laura
B. joins Galang. Tina's not liking this; Galang lost their strongest
player. John, however, after taking it over with Candice, stays
put.
So, the lines are drawn. Galang is
all but one Veteran, Tadhana is all Loved Ones and it'll be Rupert
and Candice on Redemption Island. The Tribes drop their parchments
and pens and follow their maps.
AFTERNOON
1: BUILDING SHELTER...AND TRUST
Ah, Camp Tadhana, replete with tools,
machete, bottle, canoe, a supply of rice and a map to drinkable
(after boiling) water. We get to work on building a shelter. Brad
has relived Monica's S:OW experience over and over...but
to do it for real is nerve-racking. As the men build the framework,
the women weave pond fronds together for cover. Brad still regrets
his first words about protecting Monica and tells the Tribe that,
if he doesn't give it his all in Challenges, they have his blessing
to kick him to RI.
But, behind the scenes, Brad is following
his wife's advice and starting what I'm calling the Four-and-a-Half
Men Alliance with John, Hayden, Vytas and Caleb (him being the "half";
no disrespect). John thinks this leadership role by Brad could backfire
on him. As for the "half"...Caleb just agrees to shut
him up, knowing he's just gonna front with Monica post-Merge.
With shelter nearly complete, Vytas
tries to start a fire. Unlike Galang, though, he has a hard time
with it. As Ciera watches, she confesses to being a sort of "Teen
Mom" before MTV butchered the concept. It was rough...but her
mom Laura M. helped her through it. Vytas then shares how HE was
a teenage felon, a heroin addict and who is all but excommunicated
(to this day, mind you, 14 years sober later) from his bro, Aras.
He hopes to mend fences in this game. No fire comes from it...but
trust and understanding seems to.
(Day 2 seems to be all about RI and
Candice dealing with Rupert...so we zip to...)
DAY 3: TREE-MAIL!
It's more like Crate-Mail...a box stacked on top of crates...but
whatever. It reads as follows:
|
WILL YOU CHOOSE TO STEP
FORWARD?
TO RUN, JUMP AND SWIM.
WILL YOU PADDLE STRAIGHT THE FIRST TIME?
YOUR CHANCES ARE PRETTY SLIM.
OR SHOULD YOU ASSEMBLE THE
PIECES?
TO MAKE THE FLAG RELEASE SPIN.
WILL YOU BE VOTED OUT TONIGHT?
WELL, NOT IF YOU WIN!! |
|
A team flag is alongside it and Brad
brings it to camp. The Tribe get down to strategy right away. Katie
says she's better than her mother Tina at puzzles so...that's the
set-up to an AWESOME match-up!
IMMUNITY CHALLENGE:
BLUE LAGOON BUSTLE
Challenge Beach awaits the eighteen Survivors and Uncle Jeff greets
them all (and hands Julie B. a yellow Galang Buff(TM) to replace
the red Tadhana one she got at the beginning). Colton says they
had fire 15 minutes in thanks to Tyson. Brad thinks they're bluffing...and
then Hayden bluffs HIMSELF by saying THEY have fire. Uncle Jeff
explains the first Challenge of their stay in BvW:
Six tribesmen will swim through a watery
obstacle course to a boat. Then, after untying said boat, they will
paddle the boat (and a chest puzzle pieces) to shore. The other
three will put together a ship's wheel puzzle. The first tribe to
use the wheel to raise their tribal flag wins the Tribal Immunity
Idol! And, MAN, is it fugly! Like a brown Buddha holding a bread
basket over its breadbasket. But that ugly thing means your Tribe
gets to chill while the other sends someone off to Redemption Island
to join the two ex-Galangs. Oh, yeah, and in case someone IS bluffing,
the winners get flint to make the fire-making easier tonight. As
expected, Tina and Katie will stay behind. Tina's joined by Laura
M. and Monica, Katie by Caleb and Ciera. Everyone else is going
swimming.
"Survivors, ready....GO!!"
Galang opens a bit of a lead over the
cargo net, but only because Tadhana work together instead of separately.
The Vets struggle getting Gervase over the log...and almost leave
Aras behind. Tadhana gets to the first platform ahead and they're
back in the water over the crates before Galang are even up. Youth
over experience, it seems. Down to the knots in the anchor goes
the Loved Ones as an exhausted Gervase belly-flops after a shove
by Aras. Aras has to drag Gervase to the boat lifeguard-style. Meanwhile,
Tadhana gets the boat untied and scrambles into it to grab their
oars and start heading back. Galang makes time up by untying THEIR
boat...but they take a wrong turn whilst paddling and Tadhana's
lead is HUGE when they get back to shore.
Up to shore, the red chest is brought
to the platform where Katie, Caleb and Ciera unload it. Hub pieces,
half-spokes and handles make up the puzzle. By the time Galang can
straighten up and paddle right, Katie leads her team in figuring
things out. But once the yellow chest gets in front of Tina, Monica
and Laura M...it is ON like Pagong! Katie panics a little, not sure
if the spokes are right. Tina is fast but calm as she leads her
squad. Galang catches up...and then surpasses Tadhana by having
all their spokes done first. As they screw them on to the hub, Tadhana
are still struggling. Galang get their spokes in place and work
on the outer hub and handles...and Tadhana FINALLY get their spokes
right. But...it's too little, too late. The two mothers and wife
plant in the wheel and strike the colors of their yellow flag! GALANG
WINS IMMUNITY (AND FLINT)!
The Vets get Mr. Ugly and flint. But...it's
not all happy happy happy. Colton is sobbing like Stephenie after
the "Ulong Massacre", fearing that Caleb might be taking
the walk to RI. John is pissed at Gervase rubbing it in; he's considering
sending Marissa home just to spite him!.
AFTERNOON 3: ANOTHER NEW FEELING
Well,...that, uh,...stunk.
Blowing such a lead and now being forced to choose one of their
own. But Brad tries to keep it positive: everyone tried their best,
their loved ones have fire and..hey, the better tribe won. Katie
feels responsible for this (especially after the bragging she did).
Marissa goes off...about her uncle Gervase going from dead in the
water to "in yo face". Brad wants them to win with grace,
comparing today to a lion roaring after eating their cub.
Meanwhile, the Four-and-a-Half Men
Alliance have their first official meeting to see which person with
a XX-chromosone is hitting the bricks. Ain't easy...because, remember,
the corresponding person on Galang will be heartbroken at seeing
their Loved One out of the Tribe. Brad is still thinking Marissa,
despite HER anger at her blood. Caleb thinks that Katie was lost
in the puzzle...but he'll go with the majority of the 4.5M Alliance.
Vytas decided to give Rachel the bad
news since the girls KNOW the boys have bonded...and he doesn't
want any bad blood between the genders. He tells her about them
wanting Marissa out...but THEN tells MARISSA that they want KATIE
out. Hey, as long as the vote effects the other Tribe, John's all
for it.:
TRIBAL COUNCIL:
NINE NEWBS, THREE DAYS, ONE OUTTA
HERE
Ah, the Beachfront Circle of Doom.
And there's Uncle Jeff...and there're the torches. Tadhana lights
these representations of their life in the game...and hope said
life doesn't get snuffed tonight.
Yeah, Hayden WAS bluffing; they don't
have fire even after three days. Sierra says her mom's stories and
the reality of the game is VERY different. Brad knows the hunger
and cold is tough. Caleb\ thinks playing against loved ones is TOUGHER,
but they need to work stuff out like Galang has.
John seems to have "survivor's
guilt", allowing his wife to head to RI instead of taking her
place. He even breaks into tears thinking about it. He feels that
Rupert and Candice won't pull punches in the Duel...and that whoever
gets voted out tonight is in trouble.
Brad speaks of Gervase's celebration
and Marissa adds that they should've won with more grace. Vytas
thinks celebrating could work against you; it makes the counterpart
an instant target. Marissa admits she's "guilty by association"
and wishes her uncle had shut his trap. But...she thinks her OWN
actions should speak louder than Gervase's.
Katie then admits guilt in blowing
the lead at the Challenge and feels THAT might be what the vote
is based on tonight. May not be FAIR, but it wouldn't be surprising
to her. Brad says that's not how they're "solely judging"
on the others.
It is time to vote! One by one, the
nine newcomers march to the alcove, take a marker and write down
on a piece of parchment the person they want out of the Tribe and
onto Redemption Island. Katie votes for Marissa and vice-versa.
Once all the votes are in the bamboo crucible, Uncle Jeff tallies
them in secret (arranging them for dramatic effect). He brings the
crucible in and reads the votes (apparently, 3Is are not in play
yet):
Katie...
"Marissa :("...
"Marissa :("...
"Marissa :("...
"Marissa <3"...
...and "MARISSA :("!
In a unanimous vote, the niece of the
biggest Veteran of the game has her torch snuffed. She has a chance
to re-light it, though, as she is sent to Redemption Island with
Rupert and Candice
Uncle Jeff calls this a "blindside"
and thinks their loved ones taught them well...but not well enough
to avoid Tribal Council. But, hey, at least they get flint as well...so
Tadhana will not be hungry or cold tonight.
