Cinnamon Roll-er
Coaster
June 2 |
They say that a long-form reality game show
on television is a lot like a roller coaster, with twists & turns, highs
& lows, and a lot of surprises. Well tonight's edition of MasterChef,
which comes on the heels of Mateo & Brianna's ouster, has us beat,
because it has an actual roller coaster.
Today's show begins at a favorite spot of GSNN's... Knott's Berry Farm.
ROUND 1 TEAM CHALLENGE: A Day at the Park
- The contestants will choose their own teams. Kerry (Red) & Darah
(Blue) will serve as captains.
- They will feed everyone who comes through the park gates.
- On the menu: burgers & onion rings and fish & chips.
- Winners as determined by visitor vote will be safe from the Pressure
Test
- 90 minutes to prep
The Reds are going classic barbecue flavors & Cajun fish. The Blues are
going with battered fish and a classic all-American burger. Five minutes
left... and there's no fish on that station. With hundreds of people
coming.
The teams' dishes:
RED (Kerry): Classic Burger with Panko Crusted Onion Rings & Lime
Sriracha Ketchup / Cajun Fish & Chips.
BLUE (Darah): Cheeseburger with Beer Battered Onion Rings & Chipotle
Mayonnaise / Beer Battered Fish & Chips
As a reminder: at least 500 people will stop and sample their wares. If
they have to wait 10 seconds for a portion, they're going to leave
without a vote.
Kerry has zero onion rings, because while he's on every other station,
he's not on his. Meanwhile, Claudia's fish is raw, setting the Blue Team
back.
Down to the last one, and it's time to count the votes.
WINNERS: by a vote of 59% to 41%... RED TEAM!
Which means that the Blue Team, once they're done clearing up, is going
to go to the first Pressure Test. The good news is that only five will
have to compete.
As Team Captain, Darah has the final say. She saves Ailsa, Claudia,
Sara, Dan, ... and Hetal, though she refuses, giving her opportunity to
Derrick.
ROUND 1 PRESSURE TEST: Cinnamon Rolls
- Everyone is given the exact same ingredients for basic cinnamon
rolls
- A limited pantry is available
- 45 minutes to prepare a dozen cinnamon rolls
The judges are in awe of the people that Darah chose to save, as there
is no reason for Katrina to be in the Pressure Test. On the other hand,
they are impressed to see that Hetal had enough integrity not to take
Darah's free pass.
Perfect cinnamon rolls are in the oven with an even thickness in the
pastry 15 minutes in. They take 25 minutes to get to that perfect
texture.
... Tommy does not have that timing down. He's toast.
While your rolls are cooking, it's time to concentrate on your topping.
Could be as basic as a sugar-cream-cheese concoction or as complex as
candied pecans.
- Darah: Anise-Flavored Rolls with Lemon-Zest/Clove Icing. Raw.
Overbearing flavors.
- Hetal: Chai-Latte Cinnamon Roll with Pecans. Strong effort.
- Katrina: Rosemary Raisin Rolls with Lemon Zest Frosting. Unique
flavor.
- Olivia: Rum Raisin Cinnamon Bun with Pecans & Orange Glaze. Uneven,
but memorable.
- Tommy: Green Tea Cinnamon Bun with a commercial between us and the
carnage, you bastards. Visually, it's a mess. But it tastes decent.
Winner: Hetal.
Hard choice amongst those remaining?
ELIMINATED: DARAH.
Tommy gets another chance and is damn thankful for the opportunity.
Next time, better watch your fingers!
