You're the Apple of My
Pie
May 26 |
Last week, the battle for the title of
Masterchef began with 40 cooks looking to collect 22 white aprons. Now
that the aprons have been doled out, it's time to get down to business.
Each round of the competition consists of four challenges:
- Mystery Box
- Elimination Test
- Team Challenge
- Pressure Test
Twists are abound, so keep your knives and your wits sharp.
ROUND 1 MYSTERY BOX: You... On a Plate.
- One hour to transform the ingredients in the box into a stunning dish.
- Winner will get "the biggest advantage ever given to a Mystery Box
winner."
Inside the first Mystery Box... well, hard to say, because they have
been specially created to match everything that is currently inside each
contestant's kitchen. Good thing they haven't looked at my kitchen
because - besides it being a complete mess - I haven't gone grocery
shopping yet.
After 60 minutes of cooking, plating, and tasting... Your top 3 dishes
are...
- Katrina: Pork Schnitzel with Braised Cabbage & Peas
- Dan: Savory Eclair with Creamy Mushroom Filling
- Hetal: Coconut Curry Soup with Red Chili Chutney & Cilantro Mint Basil
The winner and recipient of the BIGGEST ADVANTAGE EVER GIVEN TO A
MYSTERY BOX WINNER.... DAN! We will get to his advantage later.
ELIMINATION TEST: Apple Pie
- 90 minutes to make your own take on an apple pie.
- First: Dan does not have to bake today.
- Second: Dan is given a bag to fill with apples, each one representing
salvation for another cook.
Everyone who has been given an apple by Dan can join him in the balcony,
while the others must cook for their lives. In the end, two will be
eliminated.
Apple pie basics... it starts with the crust. Cold water, flour, egg,
butter. Don't make it too thin or it will break. Don't make it too thick
or it won't cook. From there, you fill it with perfectly cooked and
seasoned apples. In the end, the pie has to be sweet, spicy, and juicy
with a flaky, buttery crust.
Let's see how our dirty dozen fared.
- Veronica: Apple Pie with Caramel and Walnuts. Looks like someone made
all over the top of it. The pie, though, tastes VERY delicious.
- Christopher: Apple Pie with Maple Syrup & Bourbon Filling. The filling
was thickened with FIVE tablespoons of corn starch. It is delicious, and
it's cooked beautifully. He needs to loosen up, though.
- Olivia: Apple Pie with Goat Cheese & Blueberries. Needless to say,
she's not proud of it. But the fruit works together. The goat cheese was
a miss.
- Derrick: Apple Pie with Orange Zest & Brown Sugar. Kept it simple.
Fragrant, flaky, delicious, but needs more apples.
- Steven: Apple Pie with Mascarpone & Caramel. The flavors are well
balanced. The crust still tastes raw.
- Charlie: Grandma's Apple Pie. Technique is not there yet.
- Mateo: Ginger Apple Pie with Cardamom & Salted Caramel. Very gloppy.
Apples are thick. Crust is too thin.
- Sara: Pecan Apple Pie with Cinnamon & Caramel Sauce. "It's like a
slice of autumn." Everything about the pie is textbook.
- Brianna: Apple Pie with Ginger & Mint. Beautiful lattice, but the
filling is VERY watery.
WINNER: CHRISTOPHER
The bottom 3: Brianna, Mateo, and Olivia. TWO of them are going home.
For teacher Mateo... Summer break comes early. Olivia... is getting
another chance.
ELIMINATED: MATEO & BRIANNA
Next time, love rollercoaster.
