Semifinals: Silverman/Malone/Schrader
November
18

We started with 15... Now we're down to nine, and for each one, it's important to play each match as if it were their last... because for six of them, it will be, as we race to the end of the week final for $75,000 and the right to be called this season's Teen Champion. Second place gets $25,000. Third gets $15,000. Semifinalists who make it to week 2 will receive $10,000. All of this week's players will receive $5000. All money will be determined, as always, by how far the players go in the tournament.

This is a standard two-week affair, with the five game winners from last week joining the four highest-scoring non-winners in a win-or-go-home race to the two-day final.

Audrey Hosford is waiting in the wings for the winner of this match...

Jeopardy! round has these six...

MSAs IN TOON THE MAGNA CARTA I CAN'T HEAR MYSELF THINK VIDEO GAMING COMMON BONDS

Daily Double: $1000 MSAs. Jay, who spent the good portion of the first half in the hole, now has $1000 to Shelby's $400 and Bradley's $5600. He bets all $1000 on this: these same-named Midwest cities in 2 neighboring states combine into one metro area with nearly 2 million people. "What is Springfield?" Try Kansas City, dropping him to zero.

At the end of the Jeopardy! round...

$6,000 $3,800 $1,000
Bradley Shelby Jay

Double Jeopardy! categories:

YOU'RE HISTORY! THE WORLD OF SPORTS INFESTED WITH INSECTS IT HAPPENS ONCE A YEAR CLASSICAL MUSIC VWLLSS FRT

Daily Double #1: $1600 You're History! Scores haven't changed THAT MUCH since the half, as Bradley has $6400 to Shelby's $2600 and Jay's $1000. He bets $2000 on this: at age 70, this Athenian was put on trial for "not believing in the gods the state believes in". "Who is Aristotle?" Nope, it was Socrates, leaving him with $4400.

Daily Double #2: $1600 The World of Sports. Both Jay and Shelby go picking for it, but in the end, Shelby with $4600 to Bradley's $4800 finds it. She bets $1000 on this: originating in Persia, this sport gained popularity with British officers in India who liked horsing around. "What is polo?" Correct for $5600 and the lead!

After the Double Jeopardy! round, it's VERY close...

$13,200 $10,000 $11,400
Bradley Shelby Jay

Some math courtesy of J-Archive.com, assuming individual correct responses

- Shelby needs to bet at least $1401, but not more than $6400 in order to stand a chance.
- Jay is in what we call "Stratton's Dilemma". If he wants to win, he needs to either bet the lot or bet nothing and hope for Bradley to miss either way. Remember that old saying, "When in doubt, put it out".
- Bradley just needs to be right and bet $9601.

Final Jeopardy! category: LITERARY CHARACTERS

IN A 1914 NOVEL, AS A BOY HE COULD "DROP TWENTY FEET AT A STRETCH FROM LIMB TO LIMB IN RAPID DESCENT TO THE GROUND"

Correct response: who is Tarzan, Lord of the Apes?

Shelby's response: who is Tarzan? RIGHT. Wager: $9998. Total: $19,998.
Jay's response: who is Tarzan? RIGHT. Wager: $11,400. Total: $22,800.
Bradley's response: who is Tarzan? RIGHT. Wager: $9601. Total: $22,801

FINALIST: Bradley Silverman

Bradley knew what he had to do and did it, often building up a big score all by himself. That and his killer math skills in the Final could serve him well on Thursday and Friday.

Third semi tomorrow.
