Semifinals: Blumenfeld/Mehigan/Karunakaram
November
9

Last week on Jeopardy!, 15 teenagers began the pursuit of $75,000, bragging rights, and the coveted Jeopardy! Teen Tournament trophy. Five of them won their games and tickets to this week. Joining them, four high scorers among the non-winners. Now things get serious as the players compete in three semifinal games for three slots in the two-day final. It's win... or go home.

Players this week are guaranteed $10,000, with a guarantee of $15,000 for third place and $25,000 for second.. All money will be determined, as always, by how far the players go in the tournament.

First semifinal players are...

Zach Blumenfeld
Lincolnshire, IL
junior
Aidan Mehigan
McLean, VA
sophomore
Hema Karunakaram
Saline, MI
senior

US CITIES NAME GAME "BC"

Daily Double: $800 US Cities. Zach has $1000 to Aidan's $200. Hema has yet to make a move. "Let's make it a True Daily Double, Alex." For $2000 or nothing... this Florida city was first called Cowford but was renamed in 1822 for a man who would soon become President. "What is Jacksonville?" Correct for $2000!

At the end of Jeopardy! round...

$6,600 $6,000 $2,600
Zach Aidan Hema

Double Jeopardy! categories:

NAME THEIR
CENTURY
ANAGRAMS

Daily Double #1: $1200 Recent Books. Aidan has only $600 less than Zach, $6800 to his $7400. Hema almost an afterthought with $2600. Aidan bets $800 on this: this restaurant chain is the title of Catherine Gilbert Murdock's novel about DJ Schwenk, a girl on a Wisconsin farm. "What is .... Culver's?" Not even sure what that is, but "What is Dairy Queen?" was correct, as Aidan drops to $6000.

Video Daily Double #2: $1600 Art & Artists. Aidan just edged out Zach for the lead, $8800 to $8600. Hema is still at $2600... still almost an afterthought. Aidan bets $1800 on this: there's no wry smile on this Italian's "Ginevra de'Benci," which you can see right here in the US of A. "Who is da Vinci?" Correct for $10,600!

Later on, Zach would sweep Name Their Century to take the lead back with $16,200!

At the end of the Double Jeopardy! round...

$19,800 $23,000 $4,600
Zach Aidan Hema

And now, here's what we have to deal with, courtesy of J-Archive.com...

This is a 4/5 for first place with intermediate Shore's conjecture.

- Hema wins if... Zach and Aidan do something wrong, and she does something right.
- Zach wins if ... he bets $10,599 and is right, while Aidan bets no more than a Shoretegic $7401.
- Aidan wins if... he bets $16,601 and is right.

Final Jeopardy! category: THE OLD TESTAMENT

THIS MAN WAS GIVEN THE ARMOR, HELMET & SWORD OF THE FIRST KING OF ISRAEL, BUT REFUSED TO USE THEM

Correct response: who was David?

Hema's response: who is Moses? WRONG. Wager: $4600. Total: $0.
Zach's response: who was David? CORRECT. Wager: $10,599. Total: $30,399.
Aidan's response: who is David? CORRECT. Wager: $16,601. Total: $39,601.

FINALIST: Aidan Mehigan

Last week we said that anyone who went up against Hema had to be lights out. Zach and Aidan were, and that's why she shut down. This was simply a case of knowing what to do, and doing it. Now Aidan's going to have to keep the momentum going...

Three more semifinalists next time.
