It's been said that teachers rank among the best Jeopardy! players ever. To that end, fifteen of them have been chosen from all across the nation to do battle at Sony Pictures Studios for a shot at $100,000 and the title of the first ever Jeopardy! Teachers Champion. Second place gets $50,000. Third gets $25,000. Semifinalists who make it to week 2 will receive $10,000. All of this week's players will receive $5000. All money will be determined, as always, by how far the players go in the tournament.

This is a standard two-week affair, meaning that all 15 will play this week, with the five game winners joining the four highest-scoring non-winners in a win-or-go-home race to the two-day final.

So far, Kathy Casavant, Charley Tinkham, and Lori Kissell will be back next week. Who gets to hobnob with'em out of this group?

Daily Double #1: $1200 Eponyms. Charles has powered his way into the lead with $9200. He bets $2400 (or $300 more than his lead over Sally) on this: to abstain from buying or doing trade with, in honor of an Irish landlord against whom such tactics were used. "What is boycott?" CORRECT FOR $11,600!

Daily Double #2: $1600 Scientists. Charles is on fire with $14,000. He bets $2000 on this: this Russian's work on gastrointestinal secretions in animals earned him a Nobel Prize. "Who is... Pavlov?" CORRECT FOR $16,000!

Lots of things to say about this match... No, not really. Sally had it, then lost it to Charles in the late minutes of the game. So congrats to him. And congratulations to Dan Crosby and Matt Polazzo, who will return next week as wild card players.
